The wildly gung-ho teams boast such fearsome-sounding names as The Sumo Storm! Curves of Steel! Certified Public Assassins! The overly amped play-by-play announcers and color commentators ratchet up the fake drama with comical comments like, "(He's) the most deadly dodgeball player in the history of mankind!" No wonder Game Show Network named its high-stakes dodgeball tournament show "Extreme Dodgeball." There's nothing even remotely timid about GSN's new action-packed series (Tuesdays, 10 p.m. ET) in which eight teams of five players compete for a $10,000 grand prize in front of a frenzied, sign-waving crowd.

"Extreme Dodgeball" is "WWE Smackdown!" meets the faster-than-light moving arena football with a dash of ESPN's extreme sports thrown in for good measure. But GSN, with tongue firmly The players feature such nicknames as Chainsaw Carwright, The Animal and Pipsqueak Pipkin. The boy was not suspended, probably because he is too young to fully understand exactly what he said to my daughter. What bothers me is that the parents of the boy did not have the decency to apologize to me or Lilly. I also am writing to warn other parents that sexual harassment can start at any age. Our children need to learn to stand up for themselves and tell an adult when someone speaks to them in an inappropriate way.

No person at any age can say things like that to our children. Frustrated Parent DEAR PARENT: If the boy didn't understand what he was saying, he most likely did not intend to sexually harass your daughter. He probably was angry with her and spoke what he thought was a grown-up insult. You are correct that we must teach our children to respect themselves and others, and we assume you have transmitted these lessons to your daughter. It also is important to make a distinction between the words and the intent.

In this instance, the proper response from the school is to teach the boy that such words are insulting and inappropriate, and will not be tolerated. If Lilly is no longer upset over this, please leave it alone. Don't project your outrage onto your child, who may very well wish to put it behind her. However, if the incident is still bothering Lilly, call the boy's parents and explain calmly that you think it will help the children get along better if their son apologizes to your daughter. We hope they will see to it immediately.

DEAR ANNIE: I read the letter from "Kid in the Midwest," the 14-year-old boy whose parents wouldn't let him buy a CD of his favorite band, Rage Against the Machine, because of the parental advisory, although he could attend R-rated movies. In your response, you noted that some rock groups use their music to "espouse hatred and violence." I want to clarify the record for your readers. "Rage" is known for its impassioned pleas for justice and fair treatment for impoverished and indigenous people. As a 30-year-old and a parent, I am glad that the younger generation is still listening to Rage. It is great music and ethically responsible, even with the inclusion of some profanity.

The parental advisory provides a good guideline, but beyond that, parents should listen to the music their children are interested in to see what's up. Last year, I read about the book "Origins of Rhymes, Songs and Sayings" by Jean Harrowven (Pryor Publications, 1998). I entered the author's name into an Internet search engine and came up only with her bridge results! But I traced her to a small town in England. A delightful and modest woman, she claimed that her game isn't good. Instead of a deal, she sent me a couple of bridge poems. Here is one verse: "He opened one no-trump very sure.

She replied two clubs with a purr. Then he said no bid And she flipped her lid. The argument caused quite a stir." (The other verses are at my Web site, www.phillipalderbridge.com.) One can well understand respon-der's being unhappy when her part- ner passed over Stayman. However, maybe she hadn't heard her right-hand opponent double one no-trump, whereupon two clubs would be natural, saying that this contract should be less bad than one no-trump. Today's deal is an example.

If East had passed over one no-trump, that would have become the final contract, probably finishing two down. After East's double, though, South ran to two clubs. East didn't double again, afraid that his partner would think it was for penalties, not takeout. (East-West can make two spades, but not two hearts.) The defenders began with three rounds of spades. South ruffed the last and played a club to dummy's 10.

After winning with his king, East shifted to the diamond king. Declarer won with dummy's ace, crossed to the heart queen, and took a second trump finesse to collect eight tricks.
