Perhaps the single most eagerly awaited new series of the season finally debuts tonight. Co-written and directed by filmmaker David Lynch Velvet," in his first work for television, it has been called a mixture of "Peyton Place" and "Blue Velvet" by critics who have seen the opening two-hour episode. It also stars Lynch regular Kyle MacLachlan "Blue as an FBI agent who arrives in the Pacific Northwest town of Twin Peaks to investigate the murder of the local high school homecoming queen. His habit of recording minute details into a portable tape-recorder is just one of the many fascinating quirks in this introductory stanza. The series continues on Thursday nights.

Also in the cast: Michael Ont-kean as the local sheriff, Piper Laurie as the town sawmill's operations manager, Joan Chen Last as the mill's owner, and Everett McGill as the gas station owner. And, following Lynch's habit of casting actors from earlier eras: Richard Beymer Side as a rich investor, Peggy Lipton Mod as the diner owner, Ray Wise of as a lawyer and Russ Tamblyn Boy With Green as an eccentric SATURDAY "Farm Aid IV" TNN, (Broadcast times may vary. Check with your cable company for start time). This program is televised from the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, Ind. Cable's Nashville Network is scheduled to carry the first seven hours of the musical extravaganza exclusively; last-minute negotiations were under way for other outlets, including broadcast, to carry the three prime-time hours (from 8to11 p.m.).

Country star Willie Nelson, who founded Farm Aid, is expected to head the list of performers for the benefit concert. Proceeds from the event will go to help American family farmers. This fourth event is also the first to be held since Farm Aid III in September 1987; the first such benefitwas held in Illinois in 1985. Among those scheduled to appear are Dick Clark, TNN personalities Lorianne Crook and Charlie Chase, boxer James "Buster" Douglas, MTV's Nina Blackwood, comedian Fred Travalena, and actors Michele Greene and Dennis Weaver, all as hosts; and entertainers Jackson Browne, JohnConlee, John Denver, Exile, Guns N' Roses, Don Henley, Kris Kristofferson, Lyle Lovett, Kathy Mattea, K.T. Ol-sin, Carl Perkins, Bonnie Raitt, Was Not Was and Dwight Yoakam.
