Co-written and directed by filmmaker David Lynch ("Blue Velvet," "Eraser-head") in his first work for television, it has been called a mixture of "Peyton Place" and "Blue Velvet" by critics who have seen the opening two-hour episode. It also stars Lynch regular Kyle MacLachlan ("Dune," "Blue Velvet") as an FBI agent who arrives in the Pacific Northwest town of Twin Peaks to investigate the murder of the local high school homecoming queen. His habit of recording minute details into a portable tape-recorder is just one of the many fascinating quirks in this introductory stanza. The series continues on Thursday nights. Also in the cast: Michael Ont-kean ("The Rookies") as the local sheriff, Piper Laurie ("Promise") as the town sawmill's operations manager, Joan Chen ("The Last Emperor") as the mill's owner, and Everett McGill ("MacGyver") as the gas station owner. And, following Lynch's habit of casting actors from earlier eras: Richard Beymer ("West Side Story") as a rich investor, Peggy Lipton ("The Mod Squad") as the diner owner, Ray Wise ("Love of Life") as a lawyer and Russ Tamblyn ("The Boy With Green Hair") as an eccentric psychiatrist. advice.
