Overnight guests at the home of I Myrtle Point( 1 1 CUTOFF ROUTE to Bandon is shown here with the heaviest line. The old route through Coquille is indicated by the norrower bold lines.

The partially finished David Slnugh-Bandon section of Highway 101 was opened to traffic at 11 a Friday, W. C. Williams, stale highway engineer, announced today in Salem. Fifteen miles of the 17-mile long section has had only an asphaltic treated base course laid, and still requires the final asphaltic concrete pavement surface before being completed, Williams pointed out. Asphaltic treated base aggregate is being used for the first time in Oregon in this section to I take advantage of local materials available at relatively short haul.

Normally, a gravel or rock base material is used with an asphaltic surface. Savings Great When completed the new highway will offer the greatest benefits in time and distance savings of any highway built in Oregon in many years, according to Williams. The new route which bypasses the city of Coquille, is 12 miies shorter than the old section of the coast highway, and saves 2.5 minutes in, driving time. The new section joins the old highway, at a point six miles south of Coos Bay and eleven miles north of Coquille. From there it cuts through low hills via Beaver Lookout to Bandon, Even though 15 miles of the section is not paved and the treat- i ed base will be temporarily used as the surface, it was believed desirable to open the highway in order that motorists may have ad-1 vantage of the improved route during the winter months.

Appropriate warning signs will be established relative to the incomplete surface. It may be necessary to close the section for a short period next spring while it is being paved, Williams pointed out. Contracts Let The highway was constructed in series of federal aid projects beginning with a grading contract let to the Momsonhnudsen Co. Inc. of Boise, Idaho, in December J1959 for the seven miles between oiuubii ou sHvcr luunuui.

The second grading contract was let later to C. R. O'Neil, Creswell, in 1957 for the seven mile section between Beaver Lookout and Bul-lards Bridge two miles north of Bandon. In 1958 the Coos Bay Dredging Co. was awarded the contract for the 437-foot long Davis Slough Bridge and 1.33 miles of grading and paving in the same area.

Other contracts let during that year were awarded to C. R. O'Neill Sutherlin Residents Spend Holidays In California City Parents From British Columbia Visit With Daughter In Riddle playground, new members nert seuais, ana lamuy. come, for information write Boj. P4ren'.
