Clemson Tops Wake State Whips Buffalo 1 Michigan Nips Duke SC Downs Carolina Gore Rips Deacs Tigs Win 23 6 BY SMITH BARRIER Executive Sports Editor CLEMSON STADIUM Clem son SC The Clemson Tigers deprived of their spiritual leader after the first four minutes and forced to adjust simply Gored 'the Wake orest Deacons to foot ball death here Saturday Coach rank Tigers defending the ACC champion ship watched in horror as Jim my Addison hobbled to the bench on the second series of plays He is the No 1 quarterback and straight A student But the Tigers overcame this sudden shock went into power runs which clobbered the Dea cons 23 6 before 36000 fans in perfect sunny weather The goring came from Buddy Gore who had been the confer rushing leader a year ago He was well on theway to a re peat claim as the Tigers opened i the 1967 season and Gore ran over through and between the Deacon tacklers Saturday There 1 was no stopping him So intense was the Gore performance with his constant flow of second ef forts that Deacon tacklers had to keep coming at him and thus they drew two piling on penalties which set up the 10 0 halftime score 1 Sophomore Charley Waters be came the relief quarterback and his performance was quite a re lief for Coach Howard and all Tigers His direction was able he carried the offense all on his own He passed only enough to confuse the Deacons (7 for 9 93 yards) Instead Wa ters kept sending Gore Jacky Jackson and Bo Ruffner into the outplayed Wake orest defense The Tigers rushed for 228 yards 122 of them by Gore on 22 car ries Gore scored twice Jackson once and sophomore Steedley Chandler kicked a 32 yard field goal Xi THE OPENING shock of los Ing Addison with an injured right knee (not supposed to be serious according to first post game re (Dennis) Byrd and (Mark) Capu ano who gave Buffalo plenty of pain here Saturday The Wolfpack defenders proved to be a potent offensive weapon again and helped set up two of four scores in leading NC State past Buffalo 24 6 be fore 20200 fans here on this sun ny autumnfootball 'afternoon This was also the second straight win for the Wolfpack who beat Carolina 13 7 in the opener last week defense led by Byrd with assists from Capuano and the rest of the unit picked off four interceptions and recovered 1 two fumbles Byrd was magnificent for the State fans and this 6 4 260 pound All American defensive tackle could have blended in as the fifth member of the offensive backfield if it for his red and white duds Dennis seemed to sparkle most when Buffalo appeared ready to threaten on the scoreboard Byrd made a number of individual stops and pounced on the Buffalo backs like a big cat Six times he made individual tackles behind the line costing the Bulls 33 yards He also batted down
