Byers, the founder, and for eighteen years proprietor, of the Rocky Mountaiu Attr, and for the past uearly two years president of the News Publishing Company, has severed his connection with that old time honored and influential journal. In the issue of Sunday morning last he bids good bye in the following "With this issue my pecuniary interest in, and editorial control of, the Rocky Mountain News ceases. The News Printing Company con tinues with but a single change in the the uin-ctory, aim win coiitlucl publication ol the XNew, well as the varied branches of the business that have grown up with and around it. I apprchemi there will be no material change iu its course, but of its plaus the new management will probably speak in its next issue. This assurance, however, I can give that it is backed by plenty of capital to keep it iu the front.

Friends who have feared its failure may dismiss their alarm. Enemies who have hoied for its down fall may (tosses their souls iu peace. It will continue as it always has been iu Colorado "a power in the land." The following officers were elected to fill the vacancies caused by Mr. Byera resignation K. G.

The Times ventures to express its well wishes for the continued prosperi- of the Rocky Mountain A'ete. LONDON TIMES. Criticising a speech made by Gladstone to a deputation of Welch associations in which he denounces in violent terms the policy of the government says, his language was so reckless as to entirely overscach the mark, and it reads like a speech prompted by desperation. The Time also says it believes the government on the whole is acting wisely in the present crisis, and the fact that Gladstone cannot arouse the country by wholesale denunciation of the government has united the London newspapers, fashionable soci-ty and educated people into some expression of opinion to the contrary, and which shows the country does not dissent from the government policy. A CUKSORY GLANCE.

The total assessed valuation of this county made one year ago aggregated something over 1300,000. Of this year's assessed valuation fifty-seven individuals and firms alone aggregate the handsome sura of upwards of $000,000, or nearly twice the total valuation of last year. It is only within the past two years since the region around the Black Hills was set-ted, after much difficulty, and with considerable loss of life. Within that time what a great transformation has been effected Deadwood is now a city contain ing between four and five thousand population, with three solid banking institutions, two churches, a public school, two theatres, an evening and morning newspaper, and holesale and retail stores of all classes equal to any that can be found in any city in the country of three times the population of Deadwood. There are now over 700 stamps in operation and, it is not unreasonable to expect that during the season 2,000 additional stamps will be up.
