There have been some ouestions raised in this connec- I a run-time man for the purpose of obtaining federal funding in order to complete and successfully execute some of the programs which they felt were important to the future of Dead-wood. Of course there were many suggested but the outstanding projects which seemed to be the most critical were Mt. Moriah, Restoration of Main Street and Urban Renewal. It was later agreed that if the sum of was pledged over the period of one year by the business people in Dead-wood, that the City of Dead-wood would put up $500 per month. This commitment on the part of the City Council of course could be effective only until June 1, 1972 when the new council takes over.

They would then have the choice of continuing this participation or discontinuing it at that time. Some of the pledges mentioned above is no more reason for tne city to abandon their part of the agreement than lt Is for nny of tho other parties concerned. The prime reason for Dead-wood's present and pas financial condition Is our diminishing tax base as mast everyone will agree. When you stop to realize that Inflation increases our cost of city operation at the rate of $8,000 to $10,000 nnnual-ly plus our deteriorating streets and water system then lt is obvious that something must be done to incrense our city income. The city Income tax was a marvelous step in that direction but It cannot be expected to take care of our past indebtedness and absorb the things mentioned above at the same time.
