Little is known yet about the activities of Jewish resistance movements in eastern Europe but we now have reliable informatipn of the Jewish Maquis movement in rance ormation of an autonomous Jewish Maquis was first met with disapproval from Gentile Maquis groups The Gentiles argued that it was un necessary to divide Maquis by creeds because the opposition was directed against one common eneYny Thousands of young Jews convinced by these arguments un listed in the general Maquis hold ing ranks from private to colonel Thousands of others however thought the world should know how Jews could fight That is whv autonomous Jewish Maquis were formed first in Lyons then in other rench towns Many prejudices had to be overcome One day an important SS leader was shot in a Lyons street Only after it became known that the in stigators of the attempt were Jew ish Maquis was this organization finally recognized as an indepen dent unit When the battle for liberation of Paris began Jews from all quar ters assembled to participate in the fifchtin They were supplied with blue and white armbands the colors of Palestine They were ordered to attack German military transports to procure arms One of their first acts after lib eration was the settlement of accounts with traitors in their own ranks As in Berlin and Vienna there were also in rench towns a certain number of Jews who had been promised bj' the Gestapo that their lives would be spared if they co operated with the Germans or example in Lyons the Germans selected several Jews who had to escort the Gestapo fntb restaurants to identify Jews whose identifica tion ifom Gentiles was frequently too difficult for the Gestapo In the prison camps of Drancy resnes and Gurs the Jewish re sistance movement worked too Destroying personnel
