Transit passenger traffic will seek other means of transportation and eventually adversely affect the financial Eosition of the system time is too valuable today to be wasted unnecessarily in daily travel between home and usiness The City of Toronto cannot maintain its present downtown business and real estate values without improvement in the speed and convenience ol transportation facilities serving such areas The present process of decentralization must be halted or the financial position of the City may be seriously affected THE POST WAR POLICY THE TORONTO TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION IS INCREASED AND IMPROVED SERVICE AT THE LOWEST POSSIBLE ARE YES or a number of reasons 1 WHAT TYPE CONSTRUCTION IS PROPOSED? Double track underground tubes generally close to present street levels with stations at main crosstown points averaging aboot three to the mile TWO ROUTES NEEDED NOW Yonge Street rom north of Heath Street to the Union a distance of about 514 miles Queen Street: rom Trinity Park to a point east of Broadview Avenue a distance of also 314 miles HERE ARE SOME IMPROVEMENTS OR THE POST WAR PERIOD WHICH THE COMMISSION PLANS OR YOU NEW STREAMLINE STREET CARS: or some time transportation research engineers have been designing the new streamline street cars for the city systems of the post war period New standards of speed control and comfort are in view The Commission needs at least 200 as soon as possible NEW BUSES AND COACHES: Even greater changes are foreseen for the buses and coaches of the future Operation that is almost automatic improvements in heating ventilation and seating will add to the comfort of passengers The Commission requires a large number of these new vehicles TROLLEY BUSES: Some of these rubber tired electrically operated vehicles exceptionally quiet comfortable and speedy planned for the system NEW TRACK: Many miles of badly worn and noisy track require replacement as soon as steel rails are available The Com mission is keenly aware that poor track is a poor advertisement for the city and for the system NEW GARAGES: Good service cannot be given with over 125 buses and coaches stored continuously out of doors through a Toronto winter RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM Above all your transportation system needs greater speed greater freedom from interference of other forms of traffic freedom from weather conditions Satisfactory service cannot be given indefinitely on narrow main line streets laid out for horse drawn traffic of more than 100 years ago MUCH THE PRESENT SYSTEM NEEDS REPLACEMENT It must be remembered that it was 22 years ago the Transportation Commission took over the almost completely obsolete Toronto Railway Company In the great rebuilding and rehabilitation programme of 1921 to 1923 the Commission created almost a new system which included among other 115 miles of new and rebuilt track including overhead and electrical system 575 new steel street cars 5 street car divisions storage and maintenance facilities 22 acres of repan shops and accessory buildings at Hillcrest All of the above property (except some track already replaced) is now from 20 to 22 years old Not only is there physical wearing out of these assets but they become obsolete and inadequate YOUR TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM MUST ALSO PROGRESS The Commission believes the vast majority of car riders want their system improved in speed improved in comfort in frequency and convenience Does anyone say the present service is so good that no improvements are necessary? In this age of constant research and new inventions any organization that does not continually improve soon dies and well deserves such a fate WHAT TYPE OPERATION IS PROPOSED?
