the Babe broke out of a shock ing 0 for 10 World Series slump with a ninth inning home run today that gave the New York Yankees a 3 2 victory over Cin cinnati and a 2 1 edge after three games The muscular blond who slammed 61 homers during the regular season had been able to hit only one ball out of the infield until he lashed a long drive into the right field bleach ers off Bob Purkey leading off the ninth of a tie ball game It was the first time the and boys had shown their power against the National League champs Mickey Mantle the other half finally played after missing the first two games because of an abscess on his right hip but he went hitless in four trips Purkey deserved a better fate The big right hander with the butterfly knuckler and wide variety of pitches had a no hitter for 4 13 innings and a three hitter for seven innings before the power struck with a pinch homer by Johnny Blanchard in the eighth and blow in the ninth Scrappy Cincinnati led at various stages 1 0 and 2 1 and continued to pour on the pres sure in the ninth against Luis Arroyo the winner and last of three Yankee pitchers With one out in the home half of the ninth and an enthusiastic Crosley ield crowd a 32589 yelling for a rally pinch hitter Leo Cardenas drilled a long double high off the score board in left center field Three or four feet to the right and it would have sailed out of the park for a tying home run It was hit off this 51 foot high board instead of over the 18 foot wall that runs the rest of the way In left and center ball smashed into the board and bounced back so that Yogi Berra was able to re turn it in time to hold the Cuban infielder to a double He died on second when both pinch hitters Dick Gemert and Gus Bell grounded out Bell bashed a one hopper at Arroyo who pounced on the ball as it bounced off his glove and threw to first for the final out The horns a ere being adjusted to measure ments when he came through with the big blow He was the only hitless Yankee regular and it appeared the season long homer pressure had taken Its toll However he hit a 2 1 pitch about 10 rows back into those right field bleachers called "the in Cincin nati Cincinnati crashed through for a run off Bill Stafford in the third inning with the help of an error Elio Chacon the Reds' speed demon second baseman beat out a bunt to the right of the plate for a single and went to second when Stafford throw was wild Two outs later rank Robin son the big slugger snapped out of his batting slump and rammed a double of! the wall in left Chacon scored easily with the first run on this bright summery afternoon It was Robinson first series hit after seven futile trips With Purkey rolling along easily that run looked bigger and bigger The Yanks finally got to Purkey for a hit in the fifth a double by Elston How ard high off the center field fence Except for a collision between right fielder Robinson and sec ond baseman Chacon in short right field Purkey might have had a shutout through seven in nings Tony Kubek opened the seventh with a single to center With one out Purkey's third pitch to Mantle got away from rookie catcher John Edwards The ball rolled into the Cincy dugout and Kubek took second After Mantle fanned Berra lofted a fly ball into short right Robinson came in and Chacon went back beyond the normal range of a second baseman fi nally getting his glove on the ball just as Robinson crashed into him Both went down and the ball rolled on the grass Kubek scoring the tying run Cincinnati bounced right back when Edwards lined a double to the right field corner and scored on Eddie single to center Once again Yankee strategy backfired for Manager Ralph Houk who ordered pinch hitter Jerry Lynch walked with first base open and chose to have Stafford pitch to Kasko (Continued on Page Two) Li IE.
