They sat there, for a considerable-time, and talked of "old times" and new times of times past, present, and to comer-rofthe indomitable courage and invincible power of the United Stales volunteers, and of the cowardly, craven Mexicans. Indeed, from mood they, were in, "they could," as they expressed it, "walk iuto Ampudia, and his whole pusillanimous hosi!" One of them had had occasion withdraw fora few minutes, and after making in advance due apology for his temporary absence, he assured his friend that but little time would elapse before he would rejoin him. Not returning, however, es soon as his friend thought he should, the latter "put out," too. Hewho firstleft, azigzag'coutse, returned but instead of going up to where himself and friend had been sitting, be approached to where a vicious Mexican mule was ballered. "Come, Bill," said he, laying his hand on the hind quarter of the mule, "let us go to our tent." "Wee-ee-ee," cried the mule, letting fly bis left hind leg at him, striking hirn in the abdomen, and sending him on the broad of his back in among the chappar- ral.

After recovering, be picked himself np, and advancing again towards the mule, said "Look ere, Bill, this is shabby conduct I wouldn't treat a Mexican alone an old comrade. If you liave any spite against me, just say so, and I'm your man but don't a fellow that way, i the end of your musket, in the dark. I tell you, I felt that last kick just as if a dragoon's horse bad kicked me. Come, now, no more of that let us sliake hands;" and again lie went up within kicking distance of the "Wee-ee-i-ee," growled the tnulc.i and again be gave the intruder a kick, which laid him flat on the ground. "Murder murder he cried, "I'm shot I'm stabbed he has run his bayonet through me he has broken my head with the butt end of his musket -I'm killed; Guard! Rounds! a Rounds Attracted by the noise, a crowd instantly gathered round, lights were brought, and the Great Kicked was picked up out of the chaparral.

Two of his ribs only were found to be broken, and his friend and comrade, Bill, was the first to render him assistance. Of course, although he could not at the time be made to believe it, it was at once seen that his enemy in disguise was the peevish mule, and not his friend and comrade-soldier, Bill. N. O. Delia.

A Yanlee Hartford Times reminds us of a device of a gentleman in a neighboring town last fall to fill his cellar with first rate potatoes at a very low price. It will be recol lected that potatoes generally were no of the best quality, and the price wa high. The gentleman gave notice tha ha had a particular desire to get a speci men of the best potatoes raised that sea and accordingly offered three do' lars for the best peck that should be emp tied into his cellar--he being the judge The potatoes came pouring in, peck a ter peck--those farmers who had differ cnt sorts bringing a peck of each, an of the very best of the lot The gen tleman soon found that he had a cella fall of the first rate potatoes, hen shut his doors, and paid S3 to the far mer who left the best peck, according! hisjudgment. He had potatoes to sell in the spring. -lartland, No.

Remedy for Sprains. Accidents of this sort are not unfrequent, and perhaps none are more liable to them than the laboring classes of people. They bap- pen most generally in tbe joints of either the upper or lower limbs, accompanied much pain and swelling, and inability to the limb. Tbe remedy is simple, and within the reach of every one. Cloths wet freely in a strong and cold solution of salt and water, applied and persevered in, generally effect a epeedy cure.

If necessary to- make a shift, when the part is very painful, apply the leaves of garden wormwood, wet in spirits. Should the part injured remain weak, as ft sometimes ofoes in severe sprains, a safe remedy is to pump or cold water freely for a few mornings. Prairie Farmer. pure for Ague and Fever. Tbe following is said to be an efficacious reroe- for the ague and fever "Take one pint of sweet milk and ooe large table spoonful of ground ginger, mixed thoroughly, and heatedover the warm as it be drank, when the chill comes on or commences.

Re- the 'dose once or twice, if necessa- -jiy, End cure will be effected." Bronson, No. 9 Norwalk, No. 10.
