HRSI EDITION MAKE OVER Sheriff 5 Others Cleared by Jury Journal Surry County Bureau DOBSON A Surry Civil Superior Court jury has decided that Detective JD Miller of the Surry County Sheriffs Depart ment did not use excessive force when raiding a poker game in Lowgap in July 1982 ive men had filed suit in ebruary 1983 against Miller Sheriff WR Hall three deputies and a dispatcher They had asked for nearly $15 million in damages The jury decided after court testimony that Miller acted in self defense when he struck Charles Ray Gray of Galax Va The jury also ruled in favor of the other members of the Sheriffs Department The other plaintiffs were Rex Dale Hawks of Dobson Rt 1 and Lowell Vern Daughenbaugh Vern Delies Daughenbaugh and David Lee Daughenbaugh all of Lowgap They said in the suit that the search and arrests at the home of Vern Delles Daughenbaugh on July 24 1982 were illegal and that assault on Gray was unprovoked Gambling charges against the men were voluntarily dis missed when a District Court judge ruled that there had been insufficient evidence for obtaining the search warrant Centel Plans to Upgrade Surry Switching System Journal Surry County Bureau MOUNT AIRY Central Telephone Co will install $43 million in new switching equipment in Surry County by this fall to provide better service a company spokesman said yester day Old mechanical switches will be replaced by' compact circuit switches which Dennis Benfield the spokesman said can be maintained for less than half the cost of the old switches The new switches will serve 11500 customers around Mount Airy and 2200 in Pilot Mountain and will allow the county to set up a telephone emergency system With the system anyone in Surry County will be able to dial the three digits to summon emergency help Digital switches will allow Centel to test the connections by computer Benfield said He said that Centel has not had many problems with the old switches in Mount Airy but that they are wearing out and would need more maintenance Paisley Reunion Is Next Week The 1962 1963 and 1964 classes of Paisley Senior High School will meet at 1 pm next Saturday at the East Winston Branch Library All ban on food tainted with the suspected cancer causing pesticide EDB went to the highest court yesterday Justice Paul Liacos of State Supreme Court set a hearing for Monday morning for arguments on the issue before the full seven member Supreme Judicial Court Meanwhile Maine ordered grocers to remove 18 food items believed to be contaminated with EDB and New York State recalled 105000 pounds of possibly tainted rice from store shelves On Thursday Judge Hiller Zobel of Suffolk Superior Court lifted the 4 day old ban at the request of the grain industry saying that state law barred Massachusetts from imposing tougher standards than the US govern would urge in light of the interests at stake that we (the full court) try to come up with a decision Monday or Liacos told attorneys at a brief hearing EDB short for ethylene dibromide has been widely used as an agricultural pesticide since 1948 Last week the US Environmental Protection Agency banned fur ther farm use of the a government or economics course) two in science (including a physical sci ence and a life science or biology) one in physical education or health and nine to be determined by local school boards Admission requirements for the 16 UNC campuses vary widely beyond the necessity of having a diploma or example Winston Salem State University requires applicants to have four English courses one math course two social studies courses (including US history) one natural science course two foreign language courses and eight elec tives But Appalachian State University specifies only two math courses to begin during the 1984 85 academic year is designed to prepare graduate students for careers as professional performers composers and teachers Learned that 75 people have already applied to become
