may no longer have to keep its secrets from Gimbels After 76 years of fierce but friendly competition the Gimbels department store is reportedly leaving Herald Square to its neighbor across the block in one of New York busiest shopping areas A six month search for a buyer to operate the famous outlet and a branch store as department stores was fruit less and the owner will sell both to a de veloper The New York Times re ported yesterday The newspaper said London and Leeds Corp would buy the stores for more than $130 million have no offer from London and Leeds Corp We have not sold the stores and we are still negotiating for the sale of those businesses with a num ber of Gene Russell manag er of public affairs for Batus Inc which has owned the Gimbels chain since 1973 said in a statement yesterday The Gimbels rivalry gave rise to the phrase tell a warning against giving secrets to the competition There are many theories on the ori gin of the phrase but according to the book Macy's Gimbels and Me by Bernice itz Gibbons comedian Eddie Cantor coined it Their competitive spirit was popu larized with the 1947 movie Miracle on 34th Street in which Santa Claus steered customers to Gimbels for better prices or selection Gimbels was started by a Bavarian immigrant named Adam Gimbel who wandered the Mississippi River ped dling bolts of cloth and hairpins to fron tier women and later opened a pot and lace shop near the Wabash River in Vincennes Ind The first store to car ry the Gimbel name opened in Milwau kee in 1887 followed by a store in Philadelphia in 1894 son Bernard one of 14 children seven of whom became the famous Gimbel Brothers brought the name to New York in 1910 He built a 10 story emporium with three base ment levels boasting nearly a million square feet of floor spact? Bernard was convinced a large new store could compete successfully with in Herald Square since 1902 despite the worries of his six brothers that it was too large a gamble Under leadership new stores opened in several cities and the Saks ifth Avenue chain was acquired in 1923 Bruce Gimbel the great grandson took over as chief executive of Gimbel Brothers in 1961 He opened a second Manhattan store in the early 1970s in an attempt to cater to an af fluent Upper East Side as changed with the times and geared itself to a more afflu ent sophisticated consumer Gimbels apparently quite get the said 200 or more of their letters until now are not just normal said Michael Minguez a Raleigh exterminator who stumbled across the bag of mail in the attic of an elderly customer last month are almost the last will and testament for some of those After receiving promises that the US Postal Service would attempt an extraordinary spe cial delivery effort Minguez turned over the letters to postal officials in Raleigh He said he usually minds his own business but he help but peek inside the mail bag when he found it in the attic The letters were Mail or Victory Mail unstamped letters from US servicemen in World War II A young relative of the homeowner apparent ly was appointed to take the bag to a post office while on shore leave Minguez said The details are obscure but the young man
