Winston Salem Journal Winston Salem NC Monday March 3 1986 Page By Mike Mulhern JOURNAL REPORTER got to send some of my boys to night school to learn some better arithmetic I joked Earnhardt who lost the Daytona 500 two weeks ago when he ran out of gas with three laps remaining just not getting that good a gas mileage as some of the others and going to have to work on Gomel our cylinder head man has given us a lot more horsepower this season and we quite worked out the new gas mileage said Childress certainly not going to give up any horsepower But got to get it figured out because it cost us at least a third place finish Earnhardt and Waltrip got into it again yesterday but only briefly With 40 miles to go and both men already out of contention for the win the two tangled in the second corner got under me and suddenly I felt something bump bump said Earnhardt times he got into me Maybe he got into some loose stuff Then I looked up in the mirror and saw him sliding up toward the wall I sure see any slow car around us And hell no I backing off I was trying to get away from ROCKINGHAM Dale Earnhardt and car owner Richard Childress are negotiating new contracts with Wrangler officials and are close to signing a Wrangler official said yesterday going to put to rest all of those rumors about Dale jumping to the Junior Johnson said the official who asked not to be named Earnhardt who joined the Childress team in 1984 is in the third year of his second three year personal services contract with the Greensboro based apparel company There has been intense speculation over the past several months that Johnson might hire Earnhardt to replace Darrell Waltrip next season contract with Waltrip expires at the end of this year However last controversial run in between Earnhardt and Waltrip during a race at Richmond Va appears to have been the turning point in the Wrangle Childress Earnhardt negotiations Johnson had very harsh words for Earnhardt after the Richmond incident Earnhardt heads to Charlotte today for a meeting with NASCAR officials to appeal heavy penalties levied against him in the wake of the Richmond crash which occurred while Earnhardt and Waltrip were dueling for the lead with a mile left in the race NASCAR officials charged Earnhardt with and hit him with a year long probation The penalty was the stiffest NASCAR has levied since it banned Curtis Turner from the sport in the early 1960s for trying to sign up drivers with the Union Meanwhile in CarolinaGoodwrench 500 Earnhardt once again came up a few laps short in his bid for his first Winston Cup win of the season Despite running a car which handling quite as well as he had hoped Earnhardt was holding in with Geoff Bodine Waltrip and Morgan Shepherd in a tight pack about 10 seconds behind leader Terry Labonte 350 miles into the race As Earnhardt prepared to make a routine pit stop under green with 154 miles to go however he ran out of gas He lost two laps before getting back on the track and he never recovered is' him But I guess call that Of course not in position to say anything about anything all up to or a while it appeared that Richard Petty was on his way to his first tour win in almost two years He looked like the Petty of old during the early stages of the race but he burned up his brakes halfway through the race and that plus the shoulder pain doomed him Dale Inman crew chief said know what Richard went through out there He was hurting when he lost his brakes that help either But he ran a good race think Richard will be in better shape at Atlanta (for the Atlanta 500 in two Inman added just get over a shoulder separation very quickly And this is about the hardest track you can find to run on with any injury like arm stayed with me pretty good" said Petty hurt some but not to the point where I drive the car Even with the problem with the brakes we still had a good Bodine following the rule for cars prepared by Gary Nelson had the best mileage of the day going 120 miles on a tank And run here is added evidence of the solid operation Nelson has put together over the last four months been in position to win all three races this season and it would have been real nice to see what would have happened at the end today between Geoff and Terry and said Nelson were a coming all says a lot about our team So finally going to take a day off Monday our first day off in more than two months I hope not a Some other crewmen may be taking today off some of the few remaining crewmen working for Bill team Gardner is so short of men that he was pressed into service himself yesterday Driver Greg Sacks dropped out after only 81 miles with a burned out rear end Willy Ribbs who was to drive ord at Atlanta in two weeks crashed that car in testing Thursday And there was talk in the garage area yesterday that Gardner may now be planning a merger with another team AP WIREPHOTO Eddie Bierschwale (left) and Davey Allison tangled during race Wrangler Official Says Childress Team Is Close to Re Signing JI 4 Kl Labonte 'Continued rom Page 11 at the race track Everybody has good ideas and it pays Bodine Earnhardt Labonte and Petty took turns leading during the first 200 miles Then Labonte took control of the race and dominated the last two hours of the four hour race race is more of a mental drain 6n a driver than even the World said Labonte when leading not that bad in fact ready to go another 100 Labonte held a nine second lead over Bodine and Darrell Waltrip with 60 miles to go Waltrip then fell a lap behind when as he made a scheduled stop for gas on lap 435 of the 492 lap event was trapped in the pits by an inopportune yellow flag the ninth and last of the afternoon Ironically that yellow allowed Gant to make up a lap he had lost earlier because of a tire problem Labonte had slowed and pulled on to the track apron in the fourth turn to begin his final scheduled stop when the yellow came out was angry with myself for not seeing that caution flag sooner and for letting Harry get his lap said Labonte I saw the flag I pulled back up on the track but by then Harry had blown by me and was So for the final restart with 50 laps to go Labonte was at the head of a four car pack with Bodine Gant and Petty But Petty nursing an injured shoulder and in severe pain was run ning without brakes and fell off the pace Then engine blew with 33 miles to go was going to be a heck of a three car race to the finish be tween Terry and me and said Bodine Labonte kept lengthening his lead on Gant until the final 10 miles when Gant began his final charge Gant closed to within four car lengths with two laps left but could get no closer were lucky to run said Gant's crew chief Travis Carter who pulled off a minor miracle in changing a shock on car dur ing the race without losing a lap Tire problems forced Gant to make two unscheduled stops and twice he had to fight from a lap down one point we were two laps said Carter there at the end Harry had to hold the trans mission in gear and had to drive with one hand no way he could pass a man while driving with one hand and worrying about the car jumping out of gear on him If the car jumps out of gear on you spin you Gant acknowledged the difficulty he had experienced' had hands eveywhere trying to keep the car on the he said I had a chance to catch Terry depending on how he caught traffic in the last 10 laps With two laps to go he got a good break when he got in front of (Alan) Kulwicki going into the corner and got a good shot away from me off the Labonte said he had caution on his sure Harry was hustling his car but I was being a little cautious with lap he said after his sixth career win sacrificed some time on the track to get through the Hmiel however think Gant had too much of chance to beat La bonte'' if Harry could have gotten up to us I felt have had trouble getting around Terry in the said Hmiel Harry was gaining half a tenth (of a second) to a full tenth a lap there at the end and I was getting a little Labonte said down the stretch he was more concerned about Gant and Petty than about Bodine and Waltrip was running pretty good but it looked like I could pull away from him when I could run some clean Labonte said thought Petty was going to be the one to watch late in the race because he ran so strong early And when you see Harry Gant in your mirror at Rock ingham you know going to have your hands full because he runs so well win in a fastback Delta 88 was the first Grand National vic tory for Olds division since Buddy Baker won the Winston 500 at Talladega in May 1980 Labonte ad mitted there were some major dis agreements within his team concern ing the jump from fac tory team to the team switched to Olds because we felt we were the low men on the totem pole at Chevrolet that we getting everything the other teams were Labonte said However Labonte objected when his owners Billy Hagan (who ironically missed win) and Wayne King decided to sell their seven Chevys instead of converting them to Olds sheet metal ive of the Labonte Chevys which posted some of the fastest laps for that brand last year at several Winston Cup tracks were sold to new team Bodine ran one at Daytona and another one here yesterday want to sell a couple of those cars because I knew they were really good Labonte said fact the car Bodine had today was the same one I set that record in here last The poor showing by ords in yes race was yet another exam ple of the edge new fastbacks now have over Thunderbirds ords were beating us last year by handling so well going down into the corners and the GM fastback has evened things said Labonte However that says Labonte means winning will be tough cause there are a lot of teams capa ble of winning now This year if you win one race be a good year if you can win three a great The race was slowed by nine cau tion flags but there were no apparent injuries Sportsman driver David Boggs
