Winston Salem Journal IRST EDITION MAKE OVER SECTION ilj Sports Sunday November 14 1982 Columns Scores Standings Newspaper Says Jordan Cleared CLEMSON SC (AP) The NCAA has cleared No 1 quarterback Homer Jordan of any wrongdoing in its investigation into recruiting violations and related matters at the school according to an Anderson SC newspaper The Anderson Independent Mail reported yesterday that sources close to the investigation also say the National Collegiate Athletic Association has ruled Jordan eligible to play for the remainder of the season Clemson President Bill Atchley had suspended the senior quarterback for one game earlier this season for what Atchley believed was a technical violation of NCAA rules The Greenville SC News said yesterday that an uniden tified source says Clemson will soon announce that it will be prevented from going to a postseason bowl game this year The source said the bowl hopes were eliminated by probation conditions reportedly imposed by the Atlantic Coast Conference Bowl bids cannot be made formally until Nov 20 although several bowls are reportedly interested in the llth ranked and defending national chajnpion figers 1 Atchley declined comment about the NCAA or the ACL findings or whether Clemson would be eligible to go to a bowl game this season However he did tell the Anderson newspaper that he has had several meetings happened since the last time Wake orest played Georgia Tech in football the Stock Market Crash of the Great Depression World War II But yester day the Yellow Jackets picked up right where their ancestors left off in 1921 clobbering the Deacons 45 7 The loss was Wake fifth in a row The victory gave Tech its first winning sea son since 1978 and probably ensured Coach Bill Curry another season at the helm was a very special game for us be cause we needed it to make a winning said Curry 2 19 1 in his first two years in Atlanta but now 6 4 and on a roll heading into the finale against top ranked Georgia I gave a game ball to Robert Lavette (his ace running back) and one to his offensive line and then the guys gave a game ball to me then Al (Groh coach) came over and gave me a game ball too got a lot of The loss was seventh of the year Unless the Deacs can upset Clemson two weeks from now in Tokyo team will finish the season 3 8 a step back from last 4 7 record just play said Groh whose defense has surrendered 25 touchdowns in the last four games Lavette ran for two touchdowns setting a school scoring record and rushed for 139 yards breaking the 1000 yard mark this year attack plowed for over 300 yards and Jim Bob Taylor bombed for another 200 yards as the Yellow Jackets controlled the game from start to finish Tech ran 30 more offen sive plays than the Deacons and held the our plays were working and Wake never had any good angles on us The downfield blocking was great and we just let Robert Tech which lost to Duke by 17 points two weeks ago and which barely beat scored two innnhdnwns and nassed for another to lead VMI to a 31 14 Southern Conference victory over Appalachian State yester dav The Keydets dominated the first half both offensively and defensively They led 21 0 at halftime They had 237 yards in total offense and held Appalachian State to 42 yards in total offense closest penetration in the first half was the VMI 34 just as tne nan enaeu The Mountaineers got their offense going in the second half to outscore the Keydets 14 10 but the margin was too big to overcome make a halftime said Coach Mike Working of Appalachian state let anv of the were effective enough to gain 155 yards between them and lost only 8 yards The Keydets played an aggressive defense putting pressure on ASU quarterback Stan Goodson and blitzing frequently It was this aggression that helped Appalachian State to get its offense going in the second half Goodson took advantage of the charging defenders to use Alvin Parker on the draw and to throw sprint out passes Parker was the bright spot for the Apps He earned the ball 21 times for 114 yards surprised us with their defense said Parker We expected them to use a 52 which is what they have been using But they
