the second period Saturday and went on to defeat late threatening Maryland 16 12 in college football Tailback Art Seymore scored both touchdowns for the visiting Terrapins the first coming on a six yard scamper up the middle at 9:46 of the opening quarter scoring explosion began Sty minutes into the second period as fullback Marty Januszkiewics broke three tackles and bulled 17 yards into the end zone Bernie Ruoff kicked the first of his two extra points Twenty nine seconds later the Orangeman gained two points when Terp quarterback Al Neville caught in his own end zone intentionally grounded the ball as he was tackled Syracuse retained possession of the ball and Dave King capped a 45 yard five play drive by hitting tailback Greg Allen with a 24 yard scoring strike at the goal line Maryland threatened Just before the half ended when the stout Syracuse defense stopped Lou Carter inches short of the goal line The Terps closed the point gap on second TD a one yard run early in the final period Then they drove to the 3 with less than a minute left but saw their last chance evaporate when Neville overthrew receiver Dan Bungori in the end zone A chilled crowd of 15681 saw the an 81 yard drive that ended on the second play of the second period when he plunged over from the one The Tigers added a 30 yard field goal by Gardner Jett late in the third period after Sanspree recovered a fumble by Bill Rudder on the 20 Meanwhile the Auburn defense was stifling Ten running and its secondary helped by a stiff wind held Condredge passing in check Gary Valbuena threw a 30 yard scoring strike to Chip Howard late in the game Sanspree knocked down attempted pass for two points A later Tennessee threat was halted when David Langner intercepted a pass and returned it to the Vol Scolnick caught three touchdown passes for Indiana a Hoosier mark and soc ccrstyle kicker Chris Gartner broke the school record twice with field goals Gartner first scored from 51 yards then from 52 The wind was the real winner in the first half when Indiana scored 20 points while the Hoosiers had it in the first quarter and Kentucky chalked up 19 in the second It also could have been a factor when Doug Sexton kicking against the wind missed a 35 yard field goal attempt that could have won the game with 18 seconds left Two of touch down drives were aided by face mask penalties and three times Indiana was stalled when the Hoosiers jumped offsides with third down and short yardage VPI Upsets SMU BLACKSBURG Va (AP) Rangy Don Strock fired a 42 yard scoring toss and brother Dave Strock
