Reynolds Tax Appeal Delayed Journal Staff Report MOCKSVILLE The Davie County Board of Equalization and Review has delayed action on an appeal from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for a tax exemption of nearly $65 million on redried tobacco it stores in the county. The company has appealed both its 1979 and 1980 assessments in that county. David Hendrix, county tax supervisor, said that the board wanted to have the county attorney draw up a "statement of facts" in the case before making a decision.

He said the board will probably decide on the appeal Monday night. In a similar case, the Stokes County Board of Equalization and Review denied an appeal by Reynolds to exempt from taxes more than $100 million in redried tobacco for 1979 and 1980. The tax disputes follow a recent decision N.C. Property Tax Commission to uphold Forsyth Count's denial of a similar exemption. W.

Harvey Pardue, Forsyth County's tax supervisor, had challenged Reynolds' claim for an exemption, saying that it is impossible to tell how much of the tobacco is being held for export and how much for further processing. Reynolds says that the tobacco is being held for export and, therefore, not subject to taxes. Reynolds has appealed the Property Tax Commission's decision to the N.C. Court of Appeals. In another matter last night, Bill Collins, a COG staff member, presented a 103-page study of housing needs in the region. One housing aspect that needs to be watched closely, he said, is that of mobile homes. More and more people are turning to mobile homes because they have been priced out of the traditional housing market, he said, adding that officials in each county need to monitor quality standards closely. Collins said that a COG task force is planning a tour of mobile-home-manufacturing facilities to see how well the homes are put together. TOO GLER FUNERAL SERVICES 120 S.
