CHECK IT OUT Cameron Saunders and Richard Lloyd who make up the rave and techno group New Atlantic New Mersey Beat TTHE 1990s are seeing a change in what always been a friendly or helpful relationship between the music business in Manchester and Liverpool Ever since the rave scene started in the late eighties record shops have come to the fore in supplying dance fans and DJs alike hot off the press with new records Because of the special knowledge people employed in the record shops had it was only a matter of time before they would start hearing demo tapes by local musicians and financing records by them Eastern Bloc records in Manchester are the best known for doing this by their support for A Guy Called Gerald in the early days and of course with their Creed label with 808 State and more recently ELustrious on their MOS record label While record shops like Eastern Bloc and Underground Records and Spin Inn have been putting out white label dance tunes for artists in Manchester a group of Mancunians have been doing the same over in Liverpool Three Liverpool Polytechnic drop-outs started 3 Beat Dave Nicholl and John Barlow were from Stockport and Hywell Williams from Swinton Having decided that their respective courses at the Poly as enthralling as looked in the prospectus and fuelled by nights on the town they dropped out of college and started selling their record collections from stalls getting involved in swapping and selling out of boxes About a year ago they built a shop called 3 Beat Records in Liverpool and now just like Eastern Bloc in Three of Mancunians at the heart the Liverpool dance scene The find of 1992 IN Manchester the groups are getting 7 younger but the scene of a couple of years back created by the Stone Roses 808 State Mondays Carpets et al is really only now beginning to show its influence on the new generation Forget the out and pout plagiarists and check out if you already the white label EP Samples of Frankie Goes To Two Tribes some very New Orderish riffs mixed in with a hard techno beat and some reworking and rejigging of 808 Pacific State (or is it A Guy Called Gerald could be a court case in the offing I hope these 17-year-olds are studying law at sixth form college) Still the whole thing is genius and they really are the find of 1992 Impressive live shows MEANWHILE Wonky Alice have their single 7 out on Pomona records and have been impressing with their live shows and That Uncertain Feeling have been selling out most dates on their college tour after a healthy showing in the indie charts and sales of over 3000 for their debut Sun-riser EP You can see That Uncertain Feeling at Umist tonight Return of Id Banger COLLECTORS of local nostalgia can fill a few 7 missing gaps in their record collection by adding that rare Mancunian artist now residing in Scotland Eddie Baskerville This is the same Eddie Baskerville who once fronted that notorious Manchester punk band Ed Banger And The Nosebleeds and whose line-up at one time included Billy Duffy (now guitarist with the Cult) Morrissey and Vinni Reilly Released on Clay records the Sound Of The Baskerville From Banger To Baskerville is an album featuring such memorable highlights from Mr Ed Banger's back catalogue as Bin To No Music School Middle Class Suburban Creeps Just Had My Car Nicked and the legendary Kin-nel Tommy As the cover says this is the story of a punk metal madman and with all this talk of punk being revived and regurgitated courtesy of The Manic Street Preachers Ed album will remind you how much fun it probably was at the time and that despite its dated sound it was always high on novelty value New album from Helen IF you into all these noisy new groups and you're looking for some bluesy torch style singing then tune Into NeW on Granada tonight for a performance by Manchester singersongwriter Helen Watson who has a new album out next week how does Dave feel about the 3 Beat posse being Mancunians at the centre of dance scene not really a Manchester versus Liverpool thing I suppose in terms of the way the clubs are Liverpool is about six months behind Manchester but people travel more to go out nowadays looking forward to the next few months since New success obviously had a lot of interest from majors wanting to license our stuff but we really interested in that kind of deal unless we can retain control But the nice thing about having your own record company if you like something you can turn it down or drop So has Dave let any big hits slip through the net because he like the record? yes We actually pressed up the original white label of Insanity record and then let them sign to Dead Dead Good records because we really like the single I thought it was too record soon after opened the shop which was a Balearic-type tune by Zennana Funnily enough it did better in Manchester than anywhere else in terms of sales time later we met these two guys at a party on Ainsdale beach in Southport They had a tape which had been getting played on the radio in Manchester a lot We signed them up pressed up the single and now sold in the region of 70000 copies here in Britain yet has only had three Radio One plays outside of the chart run Of course the two people Dave is referring to are 19-year-old Cameron Saunders and 18-year-old Richard Lloyd who make up semi new age rave and techno group New Atlantic and the record which was being played as just a demo on Manchester a couple of years back they are the hub of the Liverpool rave scene Dave Nicholl is now 23 and a joint record shop and record company owner So how did a Stock-port lad like himself get accepted in Liverpool? Friction are just people and we are nice to everyone There was a strange kind of friction at first with us being from Manchester but we were into the music and making things happen and now got a lot of respect in Liverpool and crossed those barriers into Manchester too the local kids in Liverpool would bring their demo tapes into the shop and always listen to them Then we brought out our first the radio for months was I Know which is one of the biggest selling debut singles on the dance market this year Assault Already 3 Beat records are planning for their next big assault on the dance floors with a record by Stuart Quinn who recently left 2 For Joy and has a track due out as a solo effort under the name World Upstairs In the meantime the lads from 3 Beat as well as making and selling records are also responsible for the hottest dance nights in Liverpool with Deep And Devastating (once called G-Love) on the last Thursday of every month at The Merseyside Academy Parr St Liverpool and Sonic the first Friday of every month at the same venue So Penny GIG GUIDE Indian Russian and African music Nia Centre Chichester Road Manchester European Jazz Ensemble: Band On The Wall Swan Street Manchester The Witnesses: Country blues The Star and Garter 18-20 Fairfield Street Manchester M12 The New Cranes: Who promise a no-nonsense knees-up The Southern Hotel Nell Lane Chorlton The Inspiral Carpets: As part of Mark Evening Roadshow The Show will be broadcast live on Radio One The Academy Oxford Road Manchester Catherine Wheel: Wistful indie guitar with some decent songs Manchester Boardwalk Little Peter Street Manchester Pavement Family Mik Senthouse: Glos-sop based indie trio The Witchwood Ash-ton-u-Lyne Blue Movie: Big band soul Oscars The Wellsprings Bolton TODAY Dread and Dread: Reggae Band On The Wall Swan Street Manchester That Uncertain Feeling: Umist Barnes Wallis Building Sackville Street Manchester The Winchesters: Cajun band The Star and Garter Fairfield Street M12 QF Mega City 4: Poppy punky band fresh from Top Of The Pops Manchester University Union Oxford Road Manchester Slap In The Face: Heavy rock band Club 57 Roscoe Street Oldham Diving Ducks: Blues band Kitty O'Shea's Trafalgar Street Burnley Slam Hound: Rock from Mossley The Witchwood Old Street Ashton-u-Lyne Otis Day and the Night Shift Local soul band Oscars The Wellsprings Bolton TOMORROW Rain The Hate Syndicate: The Mechanics Manchester Road Burnley The Hamsters Blues Band on The Wall Swan Street Manchester Million Billion: Blues Club 57 Roscoe Street Oldham Midnight Train: Blues and soul Kitty Trafalgar Street burnley Slap In The Face Big Brother: Hard bluesrythmicfunkrock Witchwood Ashton SUNDAY The Thin Men: Jacksons King Street Oldham Skeleton Crew: Contemporary blues The George Compstall Road Marple Bridge Stockport Spitfire: Indie band The Manchester Boardwalk Little Peter Street Manchester Tom McConville: Celtic Fiddle The Witchwood Old Street Ashton-under-Lyne MONDAY Victor Brox: In an 'n' workshop Band on The Wall Swan Street Manchester Helen Watson: Bluesy local singer The George 1 Compstall Road Marple Bridge Daisy Chainsaw: More punk the second time around Sound like Transvision Vamp though Manchester University Union Oxford Road Manchester TUESDAY Raging Kipper: Crown and Cushion Mealhouse Lane Bolton Spring Heeled Jack Intronaut Genius Beat New local bands Band On The Wall Swan Street Manchester Snake Fantastique: Bluesey supergroup The Witchwood Old Street Ashton-u-Lyne Lofthouse: Bolton indie Oscars The Well-springs Bolton WEDNESDAY This Is Us: Who describe themselves as alternative Shades Wilbraham Road Chorlton Kafala Brothers: From Angola Band On The Wall Swan Street Manchester Ykickamoocow: Club 57 Roscoe Street Oldham Roy Harper: Hippy rock Manchster University Union Oxford Road Manchester The Fall: Who being as perverse as ever have just released one of their best albums The Academy Oxford Road Manchester The Method: Resident blues band The Witchwood Old Street Ashton-u-Lyne The Witnesses: Country blues Oscars The Wellsprings Bolton Chapter arid the Verse: Excellent local souljazzrap band The Hacienda Whitworth Street Manchester THURSDAY An Evening of Skin Steel and String: REMEMBER Send demos and gig information to: Penny Anderson Features Department Manchester Evening News 164 Deansgate Manchester M60 2RD to arrive the Monday before publication.
