OCTOBER 1966 COMMUNIQUE PAGE 7 WSJS Pioneer Gets Special Recognition Ada Redd Browning a microphone pioneer received special recognition lor her con tribution to the broadcasting in dustry during the closing hours of the Southern Area Conference of American Women in Radio and Television at Robert Lee Hotel in late September Broadcast women from eight Southern states as well as na tional officers of the association watched as Ada Redd received a silver bowl from Julie Chase uller national president In making the presentation on behalf of the North Carolina chapter Mrs uller said: "It is women like this one we honor today who helped to make broadcasting the alive vital medium that it is today wom en who are the microphone pio neers This woman is the only charter member of AWRT in the North Carolina chapter and she served as second president of the chapter has probably forgotten more about the industry than most of us will ever know" Ada Redd was in on the be ginning and the end of this con ference which has been gener ally acclaimed as one of the best With the North Carolina chapter as host she shared with Jean Isenhower the responsibili ties of co chairmen They were backed by other chapter mem bers including own Gin ny Melville and Gail Puzak or those who have tuned in late (since 1939) on WSJS the following background informa tion will be of interest: Ada started her career in ra dio in 1937 She came to WSJS in January 1939 and has been on the air ever since Her pro grams have ranged from book reviews timely tips to home makers to her present format of good music and friendly persua sion to buy her prod ucts I few Ada Redd Browning (left) re ceives a cup (of appreciation) from AWRT president Julie Chase uller ABBBBE? i UKW Hr 3f I 'Bs 1 1 wM ldl 1 ffiwi I 11 i SSsgSa Jm2 ONE MORE POUND CAKE was almost too many for Beth Tartan (left) Before even one taste she announced going home" Lynn Williams (center) found plenty of takers who Photos by Jim Keith finicky about the "silver service" used Charles Newman wandered over from the copy desk and found the cake presentation a timely event from his viewpoint It was his birthday Beth Gets Kick Out of Cake Baked by Newsgirls riday after riday after riday Beth Tartan visited county after county after county after you get the point And every one of those ridays in every one of these counties Beth drooled over pound cakes but nobody would give her any Beth even offered to buy one cake but she interested not even for the Pickle and Pound Cake Lady The contest finals did yield a couple of cakes but newsroom folk made short work of them It just seem fair for all those weeks to go by without a pound cake for Beth and it was a cinch she baking any So Lynn Williams and Elizabeth Prince got busy to cap tire contest They baked a pound with and presented it to Beth in the newsroom reaction: got a bomb in If all the contest cakes had had as much rum in them as did that last one and if Beth had tasted them all have been pickled Pickles and Pound Cake Contest Is Bin Hit The public relations chief of one of Winston largest corporations called it "the greatest promotion" ever heard of A Baptist minister preached against it some readers said they were sick of it the news staff especially that member who uses the alias Beth Tar tan was exhausted by it That was Pickles and Pound Cake Contest The winners loved it and some (who bake cakes for sale) profited from it The Circula tion Department hopes it will too The AP reported it and one account of the Grand inals wound up in the Miami Herald where it was seen by a male reader who wrote a five page letter to the sour pickle winner in Rockingham County asking her to send him a jar of her pickles because sure that they are the old fashioned sour pickles that he remembers from boyhood and gladly pay for all this Whew! The Grand inals was the cli max Sixty winners from our 19 county contests gathered at Hotel Robert Lee on Satur day Sept 17 Mrs Nell John son secretary to Executive News Editor Pat Kelly regis tered them while Mary Lee Mabe clerk typist in news Kelly and Mrs Carolyn Rus sell orsyth home economics extension agent helped place the cakes and pickle jars for judging Ruth Morgan of Personnel had marshalled Mrs Jim Keith and other attractive hostesses who took the winners and their husbands wives parents chil dren or whomever on tours of the Journal and Sentinel These went over well with the contestants and their guests from all reports So did our luncheon at the hotel ballroom an outburst of gela tin Journal reporter Roy Thompson fetched and carried the red and green mounds along with slices of pound cake while Beth Tartan quivered at the thought of that combination and a chef who would so abuse her meticulously chosen menu or the luncheon program Wallace Carroll editor and pub lisher presided Other Journal and Sentinel people at the head table besides Beth and Pat Kel ly were Don Chipman presi dent and general manager Bill East city editor of the Sentinel and red lagler Journal man aging editor lagler later helped take the four Grand i nals winners and the judges on tours of Rcynolda House and Old Salem Those tours were part of the Grand inals prizes and they wound up one of our most am bitious and in view one 6f our most successful promo tion projects It began in the lively mind of Beth Tartan our home econom ics editor With the help of all departments in the company and with a lot of typing and telephoning by Mrs Johnson and Miss Mabe Beth planned and conducted Pickles and Pound Cake contests in 19 coun ties of Northwest North Carolina and Southwest Virginia Beth went to every one of them starting with the Rock ingham and Stokes contests on July 8 and ending with the or syth event (201 cakes entered) on Sept 9 She even cut her vacation short to get back for one county contest With her at various times went news staffers Arlene Ed wards Ray Rollins Jeanette Reid rank Jones Jim Keith Larry Martin Bill Ray lagler Kelly and Carroll Home economics extension agents gave great cooperation and local newspapers and radio stations gave good coverage Everywhere the participants made all the work and worry time money and newspaper space seem worth the spending by urging Beth to have the con test again next year Any decision on whether the success of the Pickles and Pound Cake Contest and the exhaustion can be repeated Beth says will have to wait un til later.
