Staff Raportar Ronchie Johnson the guy with the most discussed nickname in the Atlantic Coast Conference and one of the most unusual backgrounds finally got his chance to play Saturday Wake orest had fallen behind Purdue 20 0 in the first half and James McDougald went to the sidelines with an ailing leg just before intermission At that time it looked as if the Deacons might be trounced Without their star tailback any prospects of a comeback were dim Johnson got the call when McDougald went out and his play had a lot to do with success in the second half final margin might have been significantly greater than 26 17 if Johnson hadn't chipped in with 44 yards on 12 carries plus two pass receptions The chance to play had been a long time coming for Johnson a resident of Lothian Md who got no grant offers at all after high school Initially he enrolled at Tarleton State a small college in Texas which he literally selected at random had a big book a guide to Johnson recalled opened it up to a page and closed my eyes I put my finger down on the page and that's where it landed He only stayed at Tarleton State for one semester and played in two games was too far from Johnson said they have the kind of program I thought I could fit in The main thing was the coaching staff I think I got a fair So Johnson went back to Maryland enrolled in a small com munity college for a semester and began writing letters Hoping for a chance to play big time side the right field foul pole 340 feet from home plate The Dodgers tied the score in the bottom of the third when Rick Monday the edge it had last season when Mike Voight playing on a bad leg ran for 1400 yards behind a veteran line seems the operative salzano worci Matt Kupec is probably the best voung quarterback in the ACC but the rest of the backfield is inexperienced and hasn't ad justed yet The offensive line is still building around junior Mike Salzano and is pointing toward its league season In its two most important games Kentucky and Texas Tech Carolina has scored only 14 points Those teams have strong defenses Kupec thought the Tar Heels gained confidence in their See UNC Page 53 4 IK ML S' nSr i Billy Barnhill rarely misses a North Carolina State football practice and he hasn't missed a home game since 1974 But Barnhill has never seen the Wolfpack play He is blind Barnhill would dispute the contention that he has not seen State he sees them every day in his mind and in his heart And he can sit in the stands at practice and keep up a running commentary on what is going on on the field His accuracy is amazing He made one error last Wednesday afternoon mistaking the sounds of the cleats of a track man for those of a football player Barnhill did identify players by their voices and called the scrimmage plays distinguishing between a pass and a run He carried on conversations with his friends in the stands calling each correctly by name Barnhill is 31 years old works in the Workshop for the Blind and lives at the YMCA here He came to Raleigh from Greenville when he was 10 years old to attend the Gov Morehead School for the Blind where he was on the wrestling team got interested in State back in Roman Gabriel's 1959 61) Barnhill said used to listen to the State games with Bill Jackson and Wally In 1974 Barnhill met Lou Holtz the former State coach at the YMCA and the two started talking about State football Holtz was impressed with Barnhill's knowledge of and interest in State football and invited him to come to practice So every afternoon as aoon as he gets back to the YMCA from work Barnhill walks several blocks to the State practice field Using his white cane as a guide he crosses streets walks across campus goes down the steps of the stands around a wire fence and over some rough terrain to the sidelines He stands there well out of the way and watches prac tice He is a respected member of the hard core regulars who watch the Pack work out every day Last Wednesday he arrived about 5 He was greeted by the regulars Bubba Green State's in jured defensive tackle was sitting in the stands and spoke to Barnhill Barnhill said immediately your Green told him he would be operated on the next day and Barnhill expressed his concern Barnhill sat in the stands to talk to a reporter about his interest in State football He said he does miss practice occassionally Some Tuesdays he plays beep baseball (a baseball game for the blind where the ball is wired to make a beep ing sound) and some days he has to go get a haircut Can he really get anything from practice? Barnhill smiled at the ignorance of sighted people who don't realize how much blind people can see scrimmaging Barnhill said as the Pack began scrimmaging really hitting live Johnny Evans is at quarterback There was a running play and face lit up with a broad smile he said was a good hit That play came this It did was a running he reported And it was See Barnhill Page 53 football he wrote to Clemson North Carolina State North Carolina Virginia Tech and Wake orest The most favorable response came from Wake said get an equal shot at making the team and that was all I asked Johnson said just wanted a He came to Wake last fall with no athletic grant relying on student aid and a loan The Deacon coaching staff was sufficiently impress ed to award Johnson a grant at the end of the year No rose garden materialized for Johnson even then Before the start of this season most of the talk about Wake offense concerned McDougald and how he might carry the ball 35 to 40 times a game That leave much room for a reserve tailback was getting down before the Johnson ad mitted then I said to myself proven good It's up to me to prove how good I am and if both good both physique is similar to McDougald He is 5 10 and weighs 190 but there the similarities end describe his style See Johnson Page 53 i.
