North Carolina football team was properly functioning yesterday But this time it was the offense which used turnovers and lengthy drives to give the Tar Heels a 34 32 win over Army Taking off the week this time around was the defense which had been solid last week in a 12 0 win over Northwestern Army quarterback Leamon Hall a 6 5 junior from Apopka la passed for 385 yards on the Tar Heel defense setting school records in the process and brought the Cadets back from a 14 0 first quarter deficit rom then on the Tar Heels were hard pressed in taking their fourth win of the season in as many games Carolina Coach Bill Dooley seemed concerned over the a personality But the offense led by tailback Mike Voight had a respectable performance and produced scores and timely drives when needed Voight still bothered by tendinitis in his right ankle ran for 168 yards in 32 carries and scored four times Carolina rushed for 236 yards passed for 76 more and had 18 first downs Army which dropped to 2 1 had 38 first downs (20 in the first half) and 141 yards rushing for a 526 yard total offensive game passing totals 28 completions 55 attempts and his yar dage were school records He broke the completions and attempts marks with over 10 minutes left in the game felt we had to be able to stop both their passing and their Dooley explained a quartefbabk like got they run everything the pro set Mountaineers blistered Wofford 42 0 last night in a football game that had little significance otherwise 5 The Mountaineers lost the football nine times in their previous two games and dropped two more fumbles against the Terriers On the next play after each fumble however the hard hitting Ap palachian defense regained possession The non conference victory was third straight after an opening game loss to South Carolina and the Apps have not yielded a touchdown since falling 21 10 to the Gamecocks Not that there are no worries for Coach Jim Brakefield who came here five years ago from Wofford than an NAIA power The Mountaineers have yet to prove that ready to stop East Carolina in the Southern Conference race and last night quarterback Robbie Price limped painfully off the field in the third quarter But the game was mostly pleasing to 10120 fans at Conrad Stadium since the opponent was Wofford after all Six players scored Ap palachina's six touchdowns and the defense often manned by substitutes held quarter back Rick Veer to 206 total yards The defensive leaders includ ed Quinton McKinney who recovered two fumbles The Mountaineers gained 385 total yards including 281 rushing The touchdowns were by Calvin Simon (12 yards) Tom Gary seven yards Mike Clark (one yard) Terry Smith (26 yard pass from Price) John Craig (one yard) and Jimmy Dobbins (four yards) Scott McConnell was the leading rusher with 67 net yards Appalachian held Wofford without a first down on the opening series then marched 58 yards in eight plays for a touchdown with 10:44 left The Mountaineers mixed their at tack well and had just third down play That one was for the score Simon got the Appalachian touchdown on a 12 yard sweep of the right side after Price's pitch Wofford went breaks loose for long gain against Virginia Blue Devils Hold Off Scrappy Cavs 21 6 By Mary Garber Slaft Reporter CHARLOTTESVILLE Va Duke scored on its first two possessions and then had to battle to hold off a scrappy Virginia team before handing the Cavaliers their 12th straight loss 21 6 Duke's offensive line manhandled Virginia's defense on the first drive marching 77 yards for a touchdown from the opening kickoff Mike Dunn Mike Barney Tony Ben jamin and Art Gore clicked off consistent yardage behind an offensive line that got the jump on defense Barney scored the touchdown off left guard from the one yard line After the kickoff Virginia ran 3 playsand Russ Henderson dropped back to kick He got a bad snap from center tried to run and Duke took over on the Virginia 32 The Blue Devils scored in seven plays but Virginia's defense was stronger under this pressure Duke got a first down on the six and could not put the ball in until fourth down when Benjamin smashed over the right side Vince usco had kicked the extra point after the first touchdown but his attempt on the second score was wide to 1 MHMK fegg MIKE DUNN 60 yard run 4:49 left in the first period or the rest of the game Duke's offense moved the ball effectively (for 416 yards total offense) but was able to score only once usco missed a 29 yard field goal in the second period Virginia's defense stopped Duke on the five in the fourth period Duke's second string quarterback Dale Oostydyk fumbled on the Virginia nine and linebacker Kevin Bowie 11 Duke had penetrated to the Virginia three when the game ended offense was stymied by defense The Cavaliers gained 182 yards on 55 plays Joe field goal of 35 and 47 yards were the only Virginia scores With Duke leading 13 0 at the start of the second quarter Virginia moved from its 40 yard line after a Duke punt to the Duke 18 where Jenkins kicked a 35 yarder to make it 13 3 with 12:03 in the second period After an exchange of punts Duke marched from its 40 to the Virginia 12 where usco missed an attempted 29 yard field goal Virginia cut lead to seven points in the third period The Cavaliers got the ball on their 39 after a punt and moved to the Duke 30 Jenkins booted a 47 yard field goal to make the score 13 6 with 8:01 left in the third period Duke came back to score on its next possession moving 79 yards in eight plays Dunn took advantage of eight man defensive line and con nected for a 38 yard pass from to Chuck Williamson set up the score Dunn scored from the one Duke went for the two point conversion and Dunn ran the right
