as Coach Bill Dooley claimed actually did not perform for the University of North Carolina yesterday then Jimmy DeRatt and his teammates sure pulled off a superb imitation Taking possession of the football after fumble recovery the Tar Heels got the final touch down and a two point con version on Nick passing with just two minutes remaining for a 34 27 victory over William Mary not going to call this team the Cardiac Dooley said was last The Indians and over 33000 spectators at Kenan Stadium might easily have been convinced that this was the real thing merely picking up where that bunch of last minute heroes stopped last season having won the Sun Bowl for an 11 1 record There certainly were alterations in the lineup but the style and results were the same William and Mary which lost to the Tar Heels 36 35 here two years ago had the ball and a 27 26 lead with over six minutes remaining when DeRatt began playing best six minutes of my acing fourth down and inches to go from their 44 yard line the Indians sent fullback rank Prochilo off left tackle on a veer series and DeRatt came in from his outside linebacker post to make the stop for no gain Carolina's ensuing posses sion was ruined by an illegal receiver penalty on a 20 yard pass from Vidnovic to Jim my Jerome who scored two touchdowns including the last Instead of having the ball within field goal range the Tar Heels were forced to punt DeRatt an All ACC choice last season as a sophomore then snared Doug Gerhart's fumble on a second down play and UNC was back in business with 4:21 remaining Sammy Johnson and Billy Hite covered 32 yards on five running plays before Vidnovic found Jerome id the right front corner of the endzone for a five yard touchdown The senior quarterback hit Dick Oliver with a pass on the opposite side for the i con version The' Tar Heels needed merely to prevent William Mary from scoring in the remaining 2:05 but DeRatt went one step further inteicepting Rip pass at the UNC 40 yard Noell Staff Reporter RALEIGH The second performance of North Carolina State's football circus 1973 version unfolded at Carter Stadium last night with offensive fireworks that were impressive even if they were predictable The Wolfpack clobbered Virginia 43 23 before a crowd of 36300 and the only thing really surprising about it was that for the first time in a long time State payed a game without breaking any records It was however the highest point total ever attained by a State team against Virginia The game was never really close State scored the first four times it had possession of the ball and held a 24 14 lead at halftime But Virginia proved to be less of a patsy than opening opponent 57 8 loser East Carolina and its final score was in fact the second highest ever recorded by Virginia against State There were plenty of of fensive stars for State which amassed 28 first downs 284 yards rushing and 192 passing But the one who shone brightest was sophomore Dave Buckey who may become the first second string quarterback to make first team all Atlantic Coast Conference He passed for two touchdowns and ran for another The Wolfpack started moving the first time it had the ball taking over at its 18 yard line following a Cavalier punt Nine con secutive running plays including 22 yard runs by Roland Hooks and Stan ritts advanced the ball to 10 But the Wolfpack didn't get a touchdown this time A holding penalty stalled the drive and State was forced to settle for a 31 yard field goal by Ron Sewell with 8:28 left in the first quarter Virginia then had its finest moments marching 60 yards for a touchdown in 11 plays after a good kickoff return by Kent Merritt The Cavaliers stayed on the ground except for one four yard pass play relying on the keepers of quarterback Scott Gardner and the trusts of running backs Merritt and Raymond Kays Keys went around end for five yards and the touchdown with 3:41 left in the quarter and Billy extra point made it 7 3 But the lead turned out to be short lived Hooks returned the ensuing kickoff to the State 39 and the Wolfpack needed eight plays to travel the remaining 61 yards This time State was helped by a penalty a 15 yarder on an abortive third down play That gave the Wolfpack a first down at the Cavalier 46 Buckey entered the game for the first time and immediately made his presence felt He found tight end Pat Hovance all alone on a simple look in pattern and hit him for a 34 yard gain to the 12 Three plays netted only five yards but State went for the touchdown fourth down and Burden got it on a seven yard burst up the middle Sewell kicked the extra point and State had a 10 7 lead with 50 seconds left in the first quarter Immediately afterwards the Wolfpack got a big break Coach Don Lawrence of Virginia sent in his second offensive unit Quarterback George Allen Jr son of the Washington Redskin Coach dropped back to pass and was hit by defensive end Brian Krueger The ball popped loose and rank Haywood recovered for State at the Virginia 12 The Wolfpack scored in three plays Buckey com pleting an eight yard pass to Harvey Willis for the touch See Wolfpack B6 Col 1 Virginia 7 7 2 State 10 14 6 14 43 Late to Beat By Russ De Vault Staff Reporter KNOXVILLE Tenn The University of Tennessee was 37 minutes and 57 seconds late for the opening of its football season last night Both the top ten ranked Volunteers apologized to a Shields Watkins field crowd of 70787 by taking a 21 17 win from Duke University It was a game upstart Blue Devils in keeping with a recent tradition of scaring the powers' that be early in the season dominated for the first half and for a surprising 7:57 of the second half before Condredge Holloway broke away from a crowd of Duke tacklers and ran 48 yards for a touchdown Holloway's run and the extra point cut the Blue Devils' halftime lead of 17 7 to 17 14 Duke bowed to superior manpower and a couple of the always present after that and the Vols turned a fumble into a victory The winning touchdown came when Haskel Stanback one of two Tar Heel problems the Blue Devils encountered leaped into the end zone from one yard out with 2:05 to play It was a touchdown set up by Pullian a left tackle from Salisbury who recovered a fumble by Duke quarterback Mark Johnson on Duke's 24 yard line Seven plays and three carries later Stanback a workhorse tailback from Kannapolis vaulted the left side of Duke's weary line The Blue Devils had two chances at moving the ball after falling behind for the second and last time But the linemen who had shoved Tennessee's line back for most of the first half and parts of the second half ran out of steam and Johnson's fleet receivers were unable to find pass catching room But up until Holloway escaped from a gang of blue shirts at midfield to score on the biggest play of the game the Blue Devils had given the Volunteers enough scare to last a season Tennessee grabbed a quick 7 0 lead after Duke had to punt away the ball after taking the opening kick The for pass (Malachek 16 run (Malechek run (Townsend (Townsend irst downs Rushes yards Passing yards Return yards Passes Punts umbles lost Penalties climaxed an eight play 56 yard drive to a field goal about 12 minutes later After taking over on their 42 when a Tennessee drive ended with a failure to convert a fourth and four Then it was lhe Blue Devil's turn They powered their way 50 yards in 13 plays and made it a tie game when Johnson rolled to his right and craftily cut back against the traffic flow for a four yard scoring scamper Tennessee clearly unprepared for the Duke strength warned against by coach Bill Battle promptly fumbled the following kick play Duke rode steady strong running plays down to the 14 before settling for a field goal by freshman David Malechek that made it 17 7 with about minutes left in the half Tennessee got down to 34 before fumbling away the ball something the Vols did five times with Don Shannon recovering on three oc casions and permitting Duke to kill the half Duke The second half was when Duke was supposed to run out of steam against the generally bigger and older Volunteers But the opposite appeared to be the case when Tennessee again lost the ball on its first possession of the second half Shannon's first recovery however saw the Blue Devils unable to move the ball well enough to get in side 25 after taking over on the 46 So Malechek tried a 21 yard field goal that missed That miss coupled with run on the next series was the hand writing on the wall Twice Duke had to punt the ball away and twice Shannon found the handle on the ball after the Volunteers lost it before an exchange of punts gave Tennessee's barefooted Ricky Townsend a chance to tie the game with a field goal from 49 yards out He missed But Duke was unable to keep the ball and the clock moving and Tennessee took over after Johnson dropped the ball and Pullian found it setting up the winning score MARK JOHNSON two TDs That left Duke with some satisfaction albeit not the sort the Blue Devils an ticipated from their season opener were unable to maintain said Coach Mike McGee I have the greatest
