broke the ACC career rushing record formerly held by rank Quayle Later in the game McCauley also surpassed the mark for most carries in one season which the late Brian Piccolo of Wake orest set in 1964 or good measure he broke the UNC career rushing record of 2814 yards set by Charlie Justice in four years McCauley has now gained 1441 yards on 277 carries this season and has 2878 yards on 17 and Billy Jackson kicked a 35 yard field goal giving Shaw a 17 0 halftime lead Jackson who kicks soccer style also booted four extra points and twice got off punts despite charges by the Ram line that picked up a first down and then Jones fired a 25 yard pass to Hepburn who made a lunging grab in the end zone The passing of Epps and the running of McNeill then carried the Rams on a drive that nearly resulted in a touchdown It did in fact but the eight yard pass from Epps to Larry Bratcher was wiped out by an illegal procedure penalty Shaw took over at the Ram 47 early in the fourth quarter and needed four plays to score Reserve quarterback rank Binnis hit King with a 15 yard pass which was coupled with a 15 yard penalty on WSSU Binnis ran for 14 more yards and Wynecoff plunged over for the touchdown or the most part the Rams See Shaw Page B5 Col 6 But things looked quite bleak for the Deacons until they got possession with 6:11 to play State had beat Wake at the own game ball con trol Wake had the ball for less than two minutes in the third period and for in the fourth mained contained State and forced a punt' which was Allen Hicks and orest roll Wake started' Larry Hopkins churned out hard yardage and a 15 yard roughness penalty helped in moving the ball to the threshold of glory at the 10 The Deacs had led only once and the defense provided that 10 6 lead in the third quarter and later preserved it by stopping State on the one foot line and again at the 10 And it was the Defensive Darling Stetz who earned most of the plaudits for those feats in the third quarter and early in the fourth State was stalled at its 25 when Hicks went back to punt Stetz burst through and blocked it The ball shot toward the goal line and Pat McHenry covered it for a touchdown Tracy Lounsbury kicked his 20th consecutive point after in two seasons The string was broken after the winning score however A 50 yard kickoff return by Pat Kenney set State in motion on the drive that was threw 36 times in the face of the blitz Carolina ap plied and completed only 12 for 95 yards The alert Tar Heels intercepted four and turned one of these into a touchdown In the Tar first touchdown drive McCauley carried six times for 62 of the 73 yards He broke through left guard for the final 30 yards and the score Ken Craven kicked the first of six straight extra points and that got him in on the third North Carolina touchdown The Tar Heels were pounding goalward again in the second quarter when McCauley fumbled Clemson end Wayne Baker caught the ball in midair and was tossed on 21 yard line Kendrick hit John McMakin for 14 yards and then passed into the end zone for the final five to Oscar Carter for Clem touchdown But North Carolina stormed right back and eight plays later had a Quarterback Shaw riddled ondarv a season with three touchdown passes The three Ram quarterbacks on the other hand were able to complete only seven of 35 passes for a measly 62 yards The loss killed the hopes of finishing the season with a break even record It was the final game for WSSU which finished 3 5 The loss also increased the probability that the Rams will finish last in the CIAA Southern Division The Rams staged a mild threat at the start of the game With the help of four penalties against Shaw WSSU drove to the 30 yard line The drive ended when Jim Roseboro intercepted a oster Epps pass at the 12 Shaw then drove 88 yards in 10 plays for the first touchdown ihe passing Jones accounted for nearly the yardage He passed to Al Hepburn gains of 15 and 18 yards key third down plays and Director Wake orest schemed and drilled all week on ways with which to beat State in a terribly crucial game So what happens? A busted play that nobody practices and usually results in disaster turned the trick yesterday But it worked and everything came up a 16 13 victory that gave the Deacs a temporary hold on first place and a possible Atlantic Coast Conference cham pionship But the latter possibility was delayed by Duke last night when it defeated South Carolina 42 38 A loss would have assured Wake of the title but the triumph left the decision in the hands of North Carolina next Saturday at Chapel Hill A Duke win would clinch the crown with a 6 1 record because Wake has com pleted its league schedule with 5 1 It will be one of those rare occasions when Wake fans root for the Tar Heels It was first down on the State 10 Quarterback Larry Russell started a run pass option play to the left State shut off the planned option and apparently had Russell trapped But Russell spotted Ken Garrett on the six yard line He flipped him a basketball type pass and Garrett twisted into the end zone with Van Walker hang ing on his back Apparently there was some question about whether Wake had ineligible receivers down field After mo ments of delay and with no instant replay available the officials signaled touchdown Pandemonium broke loose among the Deacons and their share of the overflow crowd of 31000 in Groves Stadium Nearly three minutes remained however for the doughty Wolfpack to pull it out But the meanest (to State) defensive Deac of the linebacker Ed botched things for the Wolfpack for the umpteenth time The 185 pound junior hit Paul Sharp so hard the State halfback coughed up the ball and safetyman Terry Kuharcheck recovered By the time State got the ball back too little time re mained for desperation passes to take away precious victory I 'a i ir I I Ir a ict up 7 rnj yy yyyy wXCZs ''VO WWMWmUH mmii fumin nwunHw a ik waw Xv WvT 1 fl I II fl Mu Ig a I I uez wy xvywiy 3 JMH 1' fflfl'WIHr TiimyJ TrJjr'L i jru s'z vxj 'A MWRiroirrni lawwnffi A ZA vaT A wb A Mt sy Mr Jtr WA i A 1MMI Wl aTnM liH i MBff KMnpnBni MJ JP BRSWSV XA''XMqMKfOMMHa jss a aw sK xxx'xxAY' i'x: IBT WggMffi MuM I mb jb bk8hbhkhkz mm imiin 1 yz AXiX Xv A aaMMWKVVZ swwvMMUWMftUUdaj sv yzsxsAW ywz xstx zvxy AsxATwsyvzAyAA aw AVA AvwwAcywAwwA XSSSMV'MwmnML MMM w'W aas aw ewy A PJA AZ MW A cva ww mwc wr If 1'1 1 sJ WSg I hl Ira yf1Mn t1 wMIffrm Hk mMML Jr Mr WB llaBaL WsKlHBiMIBMBmmnHmakin i 1 mY A 4Sr jHmTcu Jf yfMv 'iwlB UMJ SMPHB A MaHK UHI lffS3 4W El flb' BL 1 Xz Er 'rX' JlOP I aX xA A jgiHk TrjniriMfUfTnnn MHHkar 4v 4 a vxs sa Na vzWKBBPYxX a a'Y? xxr: A WPMMby at i 1 WMasg rx MtoWi 'CT? feKjsW £'x5hi' giiiii a Alr a vAvvA 1 1 xtk 5.
