C. Public Service Co. 1313..,...... 331 POLITICS AND THE POLITICIANS Every Republican President since Lincoln, with the exception of Roosevelt, has been a native of Ohio. Mayor Fitzgerald, of Boston, is already stumping Massachusetts in his campaign to succeed to the seat of United States Senator Crane.

The lines are being drawn for 8 sharp political fight in West Virginia for the seat of United States Senator Clarence Watson, whose term will expire next March. Vermont Democrats will meet in Montpelier on June 18th to name a State ticket and select delegates to the Democratic national convention at Baltimore. Representative Lindbergh, of the Sixth Minnesota district, has announeed his candidacy for the United States Senate, to succeed Senator Knute Nelson. Curtis Guild, United States ambassador to Russia, is believed to be the first choice of Massachusetts Republicans to succeed W. Murray Crane in the Senate.

A. R. Maxwell, of the Lawton News and Guthrie Star, a personal. friend of Colonel Roosevelt, has entered the race for Congressman- at large from Oklahoma. lowa Prohibitionists will meet in State convention in Cedar Rapids on July 30th to make nominations to fill out the State ticket and adopt a platform.

William S. Cowherd, for many years a prominent member of the national House of Representatives, is making a hard fight for the Democratic nomination for governor of Missouri. The committee in charge of arrangements for the Democratic national convention at Baltimore this month has decided that the only portraits to be included in the conventien hall decorations will be those of Washington, Jefferson and Jackson. In the opinion of veteran political observers the uninstructed delegates will probably determine the result of the Baltimore convention, and the actual strength of the several candidates for the Presidential nomination will probably not be known until the first ballot. The Champ Clark supporters are talking of Congressman William C.

Redfield, of the Fifth New York district, for vice-president on their ticket. Mr. Redfield is a resident of Brooklyn and the head of a large manufacturing concern. He is now serving his first term in Congress. Stephens and Lincoln.

Boston Transcript. The Confederate Literary Association has placed a bronze tablet to mark the site of the house in Richmond, which was occupied by Alexander H. Stephens, while he served the Confederate States at vicepresident, and the unveiling of this memorial was signalized by a highminded and generous oration by Reprensentative Brantley, of Georgia. One interesting fact emphasized in the course of this address was that Mr. Stephens served in Congress with Lincoln, "and the personal friendship formed between them was not stroved or shattered by the dark days of the '60s." It is wholesome for a later generation, which at secondhand has suped full of the horrors and passions of the Civil War, to be reminded, as in this instance, that men like Lincoln and Stephens were not fighting against men, but for 8 cause.

Smith--Horton. Raleigh Evening Times. Mr. Charles Henry Smith and Miss Annie S. Horton were united in marriage yesterday afternoon at the Christian church parsonage by Rev.

L. F. Johnson, pastor of the church. A few intimate friends were present to witness the marriage. The bride is the daughter of Mrs.

Lula T. Horton of West Morgan street. The groom is the son of Mr. John Smith and lives in Greensboro. The happy couple left on the afternoon westbound train for Greensboro where they will live They have the good wishes of a host of Raleigh people for a successful and happy life.

Seattle, Tuesday, one thousand delegates are in the city to attend the Northwestern Development Congress, which opens tomorrow. Washington, Minnesota, Arizona, Wyoming, Utah, Montana. Colorado. South Dakota and North Dakota. Many matters of importance will be considered during the three days' meeting. Republican Primary in West Virginia. Wheeling, W. Tuesday, of West Virginia are holding a primary today for the selection of candidates for governor and other State officers and seventeen members of the State committee. Spirited contests are on fort the gubernatorial nomination and other places on the State ticket, but chief interest centers in the fight for the control of the State organization. Though the primary does not include candidates for the United States Senate the results are expected, nevertheless, to have an important bearing on the contest est for the seat of United States Senator Clarence Watson, whose successor will be elected by the next legislature.
