professional and de cent working men who enjoyed Baumgarten went on to say that better teams intentionally lost matches to poor teams due to the threats of physical vio lence led to the creation of the Congress at a meeting in Beethoven Hall New York The pioneers of the ABC went to work immediately Instead of alleys and equipment being of all dimensions sizes weights and descriptions and a conglo merate lot of rules being in ef fect as had been the case with the 9 pin game everything eventually was made uniform" The first ABC national tourna ment was held in 1901 in Chi cago There were 41 five man teams 72 doubles and 115 indi vidual matches The total prize money was $1592 By 1953 the fifteenth anniversary of the Con gress the again in drew 43000 bowlers with a total of $573860 in prize money There were entries from 1298 cities in 44 states The tournament ran 93 days The tournaments were held yearly until 1943 when World War II forced a postponement It was revived in 1945 In 1901 there were compara tively few teams and individuals registered by the Congress By 1942 the team total was 190000 and there were over 1000000 in dividuals During the later part of the war the number de clined but by 1953 it had reached nearly 2000000 with 341000 teams Since many are not registered including the total num ber of bowlers is estimated at around 20000000 In 1916 interest had grown so much in bowling that the Wom an's International Congress was formed It works in much the same manner as the ABC The first tourna ment held in 1917 attracted 8 teams 16 doubles and 24 sin gles matches By 1952 3045 teams were competing Membership in the group in 1917 was about 200 it is now more than 600000 and there are more than 18000 sanc tioned leagues throughout the United States and Turner watches construction on the Charlotte Motor Speedway of which he is president The inset above is the proposed plan for the IVz miie speed plant Si The Big Pitch Herman Hickman Turner Visits Netv Track Site STOCK CAR race driver Curtis Turner stood on a high banked dirt mound which will be the south turn of Charlotte Motor Speedway and smiled wistfully watching a stream of construction vehicles at the arduous task of fashioning the huge speed plant Turner whose skill and daring are regarded non pareil when racing equipment withstands his punishing driving is president of the proposed 1 mile track which is scheduled to open with a 600 mile NASCAR Grand National race next May The former Virginian who now resides at Charlotte and is in the timber brokerage business in addition to racing activities visits the track often and is impatient for its completion The 550 acre site is located 10 miles north of Charlotte on Highway 29 in Cabarrus County track going to be one of those turnpike said Turner referring to some modern tracks which have high banked turns that permit (wide open) driving for the complete circuit track will be plenty fast because drivers will be able to maneuver real well through these parabolic curved (cone shaped unbroken by adjacent angles) he continued there will be corners that will keep the drivers Turner one of the finest dirt track drivers ever to perform gets his in races that permit him to take advantage of his skill Had a Ball at Sebring NO UN racing when all you have to do is push the accelerator to the floorboard and the car that blow up said the brown haired veteran of 14 years of automobile racing ran a Lark in the compact car race at Sebring the other week (he finished second) and had a he said was more fun than any racing done since running on the beach course at Turner who last year was hospitalized with back trouble has recently been testing 1960 ords under track condition at Concord Speedway really put those cars through the he said back and the cars held up Those 360 horsepower babies will really perform I expect drive one in our opening Construction on the speed plant began last summer Most of the work to this stage has been moving dirt chose this site for its location rather than the way the land was laid Turner explained wanted a place that would be easily accesible for traffic Cars can come and leave quickly right on Highway 29 a two mile road which will be one way before and after the race to and from Highway 49 Highway 601 and the new interstate Highway 85 are Plans call for 50000 seating capacity when the plant is completed However speedway officials count ing on more than 30000 seats for the opening race Working on Grandstand Side WORK IS NOW being concentrated on the home stretch so that the main grandstand may be erected while the rest of the track is being completed If time becomes a factor the grandstands on the backstretch will be delayed until after the initial race If Turner had his way they would probably never finish the track That is to say they pave it Anyone who has ever watched his bronco busting driving on a soupy dirt track or his patented power slides on beach course knows that this guy likes to do things with a car that others hesitate to try Super speedways no matter how the corners are constructed do not offer the type of action found on the dirt tracks which Turner mastered more than a decade ago Charlotte Speedway is emblematic of several tracks that have been built or are being built for a racing They are just an addition They take the place of the old dirt track thrillers at Hickory North Wilkesboro and dozens of other where a mud spattered tousle haired Curtis Turner crawled from his grinning broadly and yelling to other
