COHEN GUMBINER'S CLOTHING STORE TOUCHED Guilty Party Later Makes Confession And Restitution and Will Escape Prosecution. Some time between Sunday noon and this morning at 7:30 o'clock Cohen Gumbiner's clothing store, corner of Main and Bleeker streets was robbed, in the neighborhood of $95 being taken from the cash drawer, while four doors between Julius street and the rear of the store was forced. Clever work on the part of the local authorities resulted in the guilty party being placed under survilliance and a short time afterwards he made a confession, asked Manager Joe Chamison for forgiveness and made complete restitution. The young man has heretofore conducted himself in an upright manner and out of goodness of heart Mr. Chamison forgave him and will not file a complaint.

The young man come from an excellent family and the entire affair 18 most unfortunate, but will undoubtedly serve as a good lesson in the future. Lang today received word to the effect his sister was in a critical condition and her life was despaired of, and left at once over the Burlington for his home at Joplin, Mo. He will return later to resume his work in the mines.

Word was received in the city today of the death of Claude B. ill, formerly a resident of Kirk, and a member of Gold Run Camp, No. 1217, Modern Woodmen of America, his death taking place at his home at Ellingston, S. D. The remains will be brought to Deadwood and it is expected the funeral will be held on Tuesday under the auspices of the local camp of Woodmen.

The deceased is survived by his parents and a sister, the latter residing at Deadwood. DEADLY MINE GASES. Their Action' Upon the Flame of the Safety Lamp. The safety lamp, a heavy metal lantern object with al circular globe of heavy piate glass, is the only light other than electricity that can be fufely carried into a gaseous mine. The lamps are lit before they are taken into the mine and.

in addition. are securely locked, that no accident or ignorant intention may expose the open flame to the gases of the mine. Over a small. sooty yellow that nie which gives a light less bright than that of an ordinary candle are two wire gauze cones fitting snugly inside the heavy globe, and It is through these cones that the flame draws the air which supports it. The presence of black damp, ol' carbon dioxide, can easily be detected, if not by its odor, by the action of the flame, which grows dim and, if the black damp exists in 'any quantity.

is finally extinguished. White damp, the highly explosive gas which is most feared, has, on the other band, a totally different effect. In the presence of this gas the flame of the safety lamp becomes pointed, and as the gas grows stronger the dame seems to separate from the wick and an almost invisible blue cone forms beneath it. If the miner continues to advance into the white damp he will pass through a line in which there are nine parts of air to one part gas (the explosive mixture), and the lamp will instantly register this explosive condition by a sudden crackling inside the gauze and the extinguishing of the flame. Were it an open the explosion Ignited by the dame would sweep throughout the tire workings, carrying death and destruction before it, but by the construction of the safety lamp the explosion confines itself to the limited area within the gauze cones, and unless the lamp is moved suddenly and the flame is dragged through the gauze at the instant that the explosion occurs within the globe it will not tend beyond the Carney Coal $6.25 C.

Why are not the resolutions passed on the 24th day of October by the Lead and Central City Miners' unions, or the socialists in control, mentioned in the communication. addressed to "Organized Labor," which was for several days kept running in the Reg. ster? The W.

F. of M. has considerable to say about being "unfair." How, on the grounds of fairness, can that communication be defended which states that "no efforts had been made by the union men to change the conditions under which they had been working for many years?" The Homestake has al. ways been an open camp Those resolutions passed by the above tioned locals stated that they would not work with union men after the 25th of November. No action was taken by the company until after the passage of these resolutions.
