of the ball and it was evident in these early min utes that the Cavaliers could not match their strong and aggres sive foes The Tar Heels scored twice in each the first and third pe riods and once each in the second and fourth quarters Tatum coasting under a 42 point lead sent in his third and fourth teams to battle the Vir ginians on about even terms in the last quarter It was the 100th victory of Tatum's coaching ca reer He has lost 33 and had seven ties in 14 years at Oklahoma Maryland and Carolina The Tar Heels crushing offen sive power wasn't the whole story North Carolina held Virginia be yond the 50 yard line in all but three drives The Cavaliers moved to the Tar 48 yard line in the first quarter to the 33 in the third and then as time was running out punched to he Tar 17 late in the fourth quarter before los ing the ball on downs on the 20 The cold statistics tell how ef fectively Carolina operated against the Cavaliers The Tar Heels ground out 258 yards on the ground and 256 in the air for 514 yards in posting 19 first downs Virginia had 141 yards rushing and 41 in the air for 182 and 11 first downs The Cavaliers had been expect ed to take to the air but this style of attack pan out They completed six of 14 for only 41 yards probably the weakest air show that Virginia has launched this season The smashing victory avenged the startling upset that Virginia tacked on the Tar Heels last year 20 13 The win gave North Carolina a 32 28 series edge with three ties Once again like at 'Tennpsspo last week it was big Don Klochak who early buried enemy hopes in the turf The bulldozing fullback carried the ball six times and reeled off 62 yards Not only that but on the Tar first scrim mage play he broke away for 59 yards to the end zone only to have the play nullified by a hold ing penalty that planted the ball on the Virginia 34 Klochak Plays Little Klochak saw action in the first quarter and for a scant few min utes in the second period Ko chak then was put under wraps for the rest of the game Carolina had 14 backs that fig ured in yardage gained as Tatum used everybody on the bench in the wild scramble The Tar Heels after losing to State and Clemson have rolled to six impressive victories ano now have Notre Dame Duke barring the path to a 1 liant finish They got their first break after Virginia had received opening kickoff Virginia's end Mike alternate fullback Tommy Simmons tallied once from a yard out The eighth Bear score came on a 29 yard pass from reserve tailback Tony McClam rock to Marcus Midgette The Bears stopped one yard short of a touchdown during a scoreless first period yielded to a 55 yard drive which gave East Carolina a 6 0 lead early in the second quarter Halfback Bobby Perry scored it from four yards out after teaming for most of the yardage with halfback Tom Mat who was ejected from the game for a personal foul in the third quarter The other East Carolina touch down against Lenoir Rhyne re serves in the waning minutes was scored by reserve halfback Walkie Hanford on a five yard run which capped a 66 yard drive It was the seventh win in eight starts for Coach Clarence Stasa Bears who have lost only to
