Mrs. McLain who was operated on last week at a Topeka hospital has so gladly cast his lot; but the real explanation would seem to be that the Kansan always considers himself in a measure on the defensive against aspersions and calumnies cast upon his State by persons who acquire their erroneous impressions from what has been unwisely written and printed, often by her own people. And this, too, strange as it may seem, when he, at home, may be a purveyor of the same harmful pessimism he readily combats when away. F. D.
