pleasing to the ear In the all of 1922 Keith Vaudeville was installed in the Auditorium and many present day radio and screen stars ap peared before Winston Salem au diences Perhaps some of the older the atre goers will remember some of those tried and true acts There were The Jordans (ibber McGee Molly) Lulu McCon nell now nationally known on the "People Are unny" pro gram Moran Mack later fa mous as the Black The Ritz Brothers well known on stage and screen Space limits so many to be mentioned It was not unusual for three road shows to play Winston Sa lem in one week I recall Blanche grand old minstrels Al ields Lasses White Ministrels and all oft the fine George Cohan and Shubert musicals Then too we had our share of operatic celebreties There was Martinelli at that time the star of the Metropolitan who leaned at the new theatre The large heating and cooling plant of the Winston is housed on our and One Half Street ad joining the building proper The system itself is so planned that average temperatures can be stabilized during the Summer as well as the Winter months Air circulated throughout the building is changed completely every two and a halt minutes after having been thoroughly cooled to the proper temperature necessary for healthful conditions During the Summer months the large cooling plant assures perfect comfort with the proper degree of cooling depending upon the outside humidity and temperature The conditioning system is so automatic in operation that regardless of the number of patrons in the thea tre the plant will carry to every' nook and cranny a clean supply of pure air No draft ven tilation is possible by the ar rangement of the system of ducts and outlets A crew of en gineers from the Air Condition ing Corporation has completed the intricate installation and the plant is ready for the heat of the coming Summer No plant of kind is more modem than this most important feature of new Winston matinees (Tex 38a NIGHTS 42c (Tax 30a Winston newest the atre is named for a cousin of Patrick Henry He was General Joseph Win ston a Revolutionary War hero whose name was used last cen tury when the town of Winston came into being He was bora in Louisa County Va in 1746 the son of a dis tinguished family which came to America from Winston Hall Yorkshire England He was edu cated by private tutors but seek ing adventure he joined the army at the age of 17 to fight Indians In September 1763 his com pany was ambushed and he was severely wounded However he concealed himself and was later rescued by a comrade One of two bullets which entered him remained in his body until his death Later in 1769 he settled in what is now orsyth County where he became a leader for independence and democratic government At Hillsboro in 1775 he established the basis for the North Carolina provisional gov ernment A year later he was in a battie at Cross Creek and was made a major in the militia and ranger of Surry County He took part in exact reproduction of original sound in the same man ner that a mirror reflects an exact image All of the craftsmanship and careful attention to detail ex pended in the construction ot a fine musical instrument have been devoted to the special new equipment With it the faintest whisper becomes clear ahd in telligibly audible even in ex treme rear seats yet its unusual ly wide power permits the life like and massive reproduction of a mighty symphony orchestra without the slighest trace of dis tortion! features controlled weather equipment modern sound facili ties well spaced seals and a color ful interior Theatre Is Different The New Winston is just a little bit different from the usual con cept of a motion picture house It Is not just another theatre nor is it gaudy ornate or Startling in its simplici ty it strikes one immediately with the tasteful design and graceful lines Built to supply the ever grow ing needs of a discriminating pub lie the Twin City Theatre Corpo ration is presenting a structure truly unusual in the amusement world While it is ultra modern there are included in it all of the usually known appointments of the average playhouse together with innovations that are Instant ly noticeable rom its graceful exterior and brilliantly lighted marquee and fan shaped entrance the patron passes through stainless steel por tals with sidewalls of fluted satin aluminum to be greeted with a flood of light in soft shades and harmonious color from the in terior The public space immediately beyond the entrance lobby is a least for the eyes of the most ex acting All public rooms and lounges are located so conveniently that it is only a step out of the way after entering the foyer to anjoy the lovely accommodations The simple lines of construction In the ultra modern interior have been embellished with applied or namentation and accented in at tractive colors the basic idea be hind the entire decorative scheme being contrast the right propor tion of highly ornate and hand wrought detail contrasting with a background of simple modern structural lines This basic idea of contrast Is characteristic of the over all color scheme throughout the theatre and is reflected in the use ot a relatively few basic colors which emphasizes large pattern areas by attractive and compli mentary color Contrast Richly Carpeted Auditorium Leaving the public space the theatre goer is ushered into an auditorium richly carpeted and so carefully designed with lighting that one instantly feels he is en tering into an atmosphere of com fort dignity and complete relaxa tion With a seating capacity of 1000 the Winston offers unaltered vision of its perform ances without posts or columns caving no balconies out every patron seated on the same floor The seats are so arranged that anywhere in the auditorium no one is directly behind the one in front The slope of the floor is such that there is complete vision without obstruction at all times Built of concrete masonry and steel the theatre Is as fireproof as ft Is possible to make any build ing The wide aisles and spacious exits together with Its complete design make It possible to clear the auditorium In a few minutes Of great Importance is the con trolled weather equipment that is ot the latest design and almost hu mnnly automatic Healthful tem peratures are achieved with such precision that neither weather conditions nor the number of peo ple occupying the theatre at any given time will cause discomfort The builders and operators of this fine theatre are of the opinion that every convenience has been considered for the benefit of the Approximately one year ago excavation work was begun on the Winston Theatre on West ourth Street or many months prior to that time Earle archi tect of Hendersonville and his staff were drawing plans in readiness for the actual building Mr Stillwell has possibly de signed more theatres in the South than anyone in his pro fession Stewart Son of High Point were the general contrac tors and with their sub contrac tors have given our city a mod ern structure unique in design and planning To the Wil Kin Theatre Supply Company of Atlanta went the huge job of furnishing the Win ston with highly technical equip ment seating carpets furniture and the other necessities of a modem theatre Geiss ler of that company personally supervised the planning of all decoration draperies and mod ern color treatment Mr Nash Weil of Atlanta directed the in stallation sound reception and special attention has been given to ac coustical properties that include the plastering and other sound absorbtion details The new Winston will be op erated strictly as a first run
