CARLTON BYRD (Sentinel Sports I ditor) only appropriate since it's the big birthday today to answer the question discovered Babe or some it will be a bit of reminiscing and uncover the fact that the Bambino along with our County Sheriff Ernie Shore was involved in most profitable deal A fellow called Brother Gilbert found Ruth in St Industrial School of Baltimore and sent him to Jack Dunn of the Baltimore Orioles The Bam broke in professionally as a pitcher shutting out the great Philadelphia Athletics with two hits in a Spring exhibition game Ruth's record in the International League stuck out to such an that scouts of several major league clubs were trailing the youngster when Joseph Lannin of the Boston Red Sox obtained an option on him Lannin watch Ruth himself but he as signed one of the Red Sox scouts Patrick Donovan to report on the Bam instructions were to swing around the International and keep a close check on the two left hand pitchers Ruth and Babe Danforth the lat ter also destined to become fa mous for tricks that made the ball do queer things What Dono van saw made his eyes pop out of his head the first time he set them on Ruth and the Bambino kept them out of place pitching super latively in several starts But it wasn't pitching skill that earned him a trip to the major leagues It remained for a Montreal pitcher to purposely walk a catcher to get at Ruth and hasten the purchase by Boston In this particular game Ruth was effective as ever on the mound and the game went into the last half of the ninth with his side trailing by a run With men on second and third and two out the pitcher purposely passed Catcher Ben Egan to set up a forced play at every base And the Montreal pitcher figured he had easy going with a pitcher coming to bat IT Those thoughts sound runny: 1 itciier 1 asCS funny now in the light of the slug Catcher to Gel at Klllll reputation Ruth later amassed It was not amusing a few seconds later to the pitcher who issued the free transportation however for Ruth won his own game with a drive that struck the top of the center field wall It surely would have been a triple but Ruth only jogged to first and stood on the sack as the two runners on base went in with the winning run Donovan the only man who has ever managed five major league clubs immediately advised Joe Lannin to buy Ruth at any price The foxy forager told his employer that he had not had a chance to obtain a sound line on the other southpaw Danforth but he recommended a Baltimore right hander Ernie Shore Lannin got Jack Dunn on the telephone and in 10 minutes closed the deal that will go down in record as most profitable He gave $11000 a lot of money in those days and a catcher named Johnson for Ruth Shore and their battery mate Catcher Ben Egan Ruth and Shore pitched a double header shortly after reporting Ruth was later changed from a pitcher to an outfielder and you are thoroughly familiar with the records he amassed He is recog nized as the greatest hitter in the history of baseball Shore too made baseball history when he pitched one of the few perfect no hit no run games for Boston ights Akron reddie Schott 103 Akron knocked out
