TWIN CITY SENTINEL WINSTON SALEM DEC 1 6 1942 Georgia Tech to Meet A Tartar io Texas By HAROLD RATLI (Ar rrnturm) Austin The University ot Texas as champion of South west Conference football is going to play Georgia Tech in the Cotton Bowl A far cry from a certain blue Monday in October of 1938 Dana Bible sat at his office in the huge Gregory gym before him i stack of letters and telegrams A few of them were sympa thetic most of them were harshly critical of Bible and his Texas football team that had just been Slaughtered by 42 to 6 Texas won a game and could hardly hope to win one Itwas the all time low in Longhorn football The chunky bald headed man had a grim drawn face is going to be a long hard he said I say to you we are going to win There was chagrin and stub bornness and a note of prophecy in the voice of this disappointed man who a year and a half before had left his husky Comhuskers at Nebraska to start from the bottom depleted football fortunes Built rom Ground Up So Bible built from the ground up He nad what he and everyone else thought his masterpiece in 1941 It was called greatest team in Southwest Conference his but it stumbled in the stretch and lost the championship and a fling at Rose Bowl glory Well the other day Bible stood bn the sidelines and screamed did it we did His Texas learn had just finished beating Texas A and for the confer ence championship Not a bold band of climax art ists like their predecessors but a plugging plunging hard working self effacing gang are the Long horns of 1942 the finish that counts said Bible after his boys had come Poy zz I' I back to irive to a touchdown with only 46 seconds left to play and win the championship that the brilliant erratic outfit of T941 could not attain Does It the Hard Way not a sensational one that spurts a team that does things the hard way Even in its greatest triumph the defeat of A and Thanksgiving Day the team had to do it that way It came ripping and snorting into a tough Aggie line Once it was stopped but back it came Sparkplug of the team is Roy McKay a 190 pound fullback who led the conference in ground gain ing and ranked with the best punt ers and passers But there also are Jackie ield a speed demon: Max Minor another trackman fullback and Spot Collins a great blocker and defensive man The line is a thing of beauty Audrey Gill center Harold isch er and Jack reeman guards Stan Mauldin and Zuehl Conoly tackles Wally Scott and Joe Schwarting ends And there is re serve strength to burn Georgia Tech may beat Texas in the Cotton Bowl but it will know been in a ball game finish is what counts most" says Dana Bible Comment I Meets Cadets By A I) CATES Iii Return Tilt All Time All Star Team In order to get a boost in the press for the opening of his 5 New York Cafe Al Schacht Clown of baseball polled the sports writers on the all time all star baseball team The poll turned out pretty much as expect The traditional stars of stars were elected as follows irst base Lou Gehrig Second base Eddie Collins Third base Pie Traynor Shortstop Honurs Wagner Right field Babe Ruth Center field Tris Speaker Left Ty Cobb Bill Dickey Pitcher Walter Johnson The nine niches in HallofaHvere great players all tried and true But some obstreperous scribes are still arguing over the selections Some contend that Hal Chase or George Sisler was better than Gehrig at first base Shoeless Joe Jackson superior to any of the outfielders selected And Warren Brown of the Chicago Sun names as his trio Smead Jolley Ike Boone and Moose Sol ders Objecting ever so politely Brown says his vote even counted and thinks it might have got lost somewhere along the way a nice little argument poll has got going It supplies a welcome fillip to the sports pages during a dull season and gives the Clown Prince a fine bit of publicity for his new venture Horse of the Year Challedon can move over got company A very distinguished guest whom they call Warren Whirlaway has been voted the horse of the year in the annual poll of the Turf and Sport Digest Mr Big Tail has won this honor two years in a row The only other horse ever to do it twice was Challedon who led the balloting in 1939 and 1940 Previous winners were Sea biscuit in 1938 (remember his the dual race with War Admiral a race which Henry McLemore said was I close you could mail them both with one War Admiral i in 1937 and Granville in 1936 The poll has been conducted for the past seven years rom a money standpoint Whirly stands as the greatest racer of all time He hit the all time ceiling in earnings with a total of $561911 In three years of competition he has finished out of the money only three times His record shows 32 first 15 seconds and eight third in 58 starts Some going in any league The Calumet Speed King has been a marvel of consistency In three years he simply never had any off days He was fast and he was regular He was like money in the bank' to thou sands of patrons of the mutuel When they needed a bit of pocket change' they could always count on Whirly though frequently the odds were so low that you barely netted six per cent on your investment earnings may be surpassed in some future day of rich races but Mr Big Tail will be long remembered as one of the great horses in America 1889 Our 54 th Year 1942 COME 014 7 BUY I '7 war ZowhN BONDS i ft (rum I) i dmEWaMMEn and get all the four years since the South has had a National college football champion but 'when the Sunnyland did get another it got it with a vengeance Not since 1938 had a Southern team finished the season on top of the Litkcnhous Difference by Score Ratings And then came Wally Butts and his Georgia Bulldogs growling along through a tough schedule to compile the highest mark in the history of the Litrat ings By polishing off Georgia Tech in Its most important game of the year Georgia finished compila tion of a record which gave it a rating of 1122 which is 111 power points ahead of the best previous mark in the seven year history of the system That 1122 gave the Bulldogs the championship over an equally spectacular team the Ohio State Buckeyes who finished second at 1120 South Even The triumph over Georgia put the South even with thfc East in supplying National champions over the seven year period but still one behind the Midwest or I should Minnesota Tennessee won the title in 1938 Minnesota gave the Midwest its top rank with titles in 1936 1940 and 1941 And Pittsburgh in 1937 and Cornell in 1939 gave the East its crown wearers Considering only the teams that finished in the Top Ten each year Minnesota has the best over all record in the nation In addition to their three championships the Gophers never have been lower than 10th where they finished this year and in 1939 Tn 1937 they were eighth and in 1938 they were ninth went above whole first second and Ratlns10181013 52 991 993 962 975 9881047 936 952 973 957 950 947 951 955 970 987 955 947 951 951 948 943 939 938 942 967 973
