PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE 13 FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 1998 OBITUARIES SISTER HELEN HART BENNY WATERS Nun and advocate for society's outcasts In 1986, she persuaded playwright Dan Goggin to donate a portion of the proceeds from the play "Nunsense," which debuted in 1988, to Support Our Aging Religious. The organization helps Catholic communities care for elderly and infirm members. She received awards from the Child Welfare Service and from Shadyside Hospital for her service to those organizations. The Organization for Rehabilitation and Training, a Jewish women's group, honored her in 1970 for her work on behalf of unwed mothers. In 1981, when asked for a comment for her 50th anniversary jubilee with the Sisters of Charity, she summed up her attitude toward life: "St.

Patrick's quote, 'Christ in the heart of every has helped me to see the beauty in others and enriched my life in the community. So onward to growth, in my relationships with God, my fellow man and the world. Beauty and grace are everywhere!" Larimer and later to the Sisters of Charity's Greensburg campus, where she lived until she was admitted to the hospital. Sister Helen maintained a steadfast commitment to social justice. In 1978, she testified on behalf of the character of Jacob Dougan, a death row inmate in Florida whom she had known from his years in Pittsburgh.

Dougan, who is black, was convicted of murdering a hitchhiker in 1975 in a racially charged case. Death penalty opponents on the campaign trail have lamented the fact that Dougan has yet to be executed, but the experience left Sister Helen with a distaste for the death penalty and confirmed her opposition to racism. She maintained her views on social issues in her old age. In 1994, at the age of 86, she sent an angry letter to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette decrying an report the newspaper published on stupid criminals. Sister Helen was committed to religious causes as well.

instruments. While in high school, still in the prejazz era, he played syncopated music with Charlie Miller's band; in his late teen age years he attended the Boston Conservatory of Music for three years, where he studied theory and arranging and gave private clarinet lessons. Among his pupils was Harry Carney, who went on to play baritone saxophone with Duke Ellington. Mr. Waters relocated to Philadelphia and then Atlantic City, N.J., where in 1926 he joined Charlie Johnson's Paradise Band.

Johnson's band, for which Mr. Waters was a soloist and arranger, played dramatic, exotic music, often for theatrical revues, on a level with the highest-ranking jazz outfits in Harlem. The band included such other renowned musicians as Jabbo Smith, Benny Carter and Sidney De Paris. It performed regularly at Small's Paradise in Harlem, and recorded for Victor until the late 1920s. As Mr.

Waters told it, the Johnson band may have passed up a crucial opportunity to become more famous than it is now: in 1927, Johnson was offered a long-term residence for his band at the Cotton Club, with a built-in radio broadcasting setup, but turned down the offer because the club's wages were too low. Ellington accepted the engagement and soon thereafter became world famous. In those days Mr. Waters' heavy drinking saddled him with a roguish reputation, which may have hindered his career, a conversion to Christian Science in 1938 tempered his habits. He quit drinking in 1969.

After the dissolution of Johnson's band in 1933, for a time Mr. Waters succeeded the premier saxophonist of the day, Coleman Hawkins, in the reed section of Fletcher Henderson's band, and then became a freelancer, spending time through the end of the 1940s playing with Jim-mie Lunceford and Hot Lips Page, among others. Musician performed with greats of jazz By Ben Ratliff The New York Times NEW YORK Benny Waters, a saxophonist, clarinetist and singer who was the country's oldest touring jazz musician, died Tuesday in a hospital in Columbia, Md. He was 96 and had recently moved to Columbia from New York City. Mr.

Waters, old enough to have taught clarinet to an original member of Duke Ellington's late 1920s band, was an independent operator to the end, appearing as a solo artist with ad hoc bands at clubs and festivals around the world. Performing until late June of this year, he never failed to enjoy himself in public, making jokes in different languages, calling tunes faster than his musicians could remember them, scatting through vocal breaks. Though his tone became fragile in the last few years, his phrasing still had the signature of a man who was a contender in the 1930s; his rounded, swooping alto-saxophone lines and plush vibrato advertised his authenticity as surely as the stylish vAmerican diction heard in James Cagney movies. Born in Brighton, near Baltimore, Mr. Waters started his musical education at age 5 with organ lessons and soon moved to reed ByMattWalcoff Post-Gazette Staff Writer Sister Helen Hart of the Sisters of Charity always worked tirelessly on behalf of society's most destitute, from unwed mothers to death row inmates.

Her words and deeds reflected her passion for social justice well into her 80s. Sister Helen, 90, died Monday in Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. She was born in New York in 1908 and, after her parents died when she was 6, was raised by an aunt. She attended Benedictine High School in New Jersey, and, in 1931, she graduated from Seton Hill College in Greensburg. Sister Helen entered the Sisters of Charity four months later.

From 1931 until 1968, she was known as Sister Miriam Teresa. That year, the Vatican decided nuns should keep their birth names. Only a year or two after joining the order, she left to join the first class of the Catholic University of America School of Social Work in Washington, D.C. She received her master's degree in 1936. In 1938, Sister Helen joined the Sisters of Charity's Roselia Foundling and Maternity Hospital in the Hill District.

At the time, as she later wrote, the only nonmedical assistance the hospital gave to unwed mothers "was to make information against the putative father, take him to court and make him responsible for the hospital bill and child support." Under Sister Helen's direction, Roselia began to evaluate families who would adopt the children of the unwed mothers. She placed hundreds of children with the families they know today. "She was still in touch with some of the people who adopted babies and some of the people who were adopted," Sisters of Charity spokeswoman Sister Barbara Einloth said. "She's been passionate about caring for people, who, like the women who came to Roselia, were real outcast people," Einloth said. "This was not an OK thing to do, if you were not married and were pregnant." After a two-year stint ministering in Ajo, N.M., Sister Helen began her education career in 1954.

From then until 1968, she worked as a guidance counselor and social studies and religion teacher in Pittsburgh Catholic high schools. Her career took her to Sacred Heart, Elizabeth Seton and Holy Innocents schools, and she taught education during summers at Seton Hill. She received a second master's degree, this one in education, from Duquesne University in 1959. Sister Helen returned to Roselia as its administrator in 1968. But changing attitudes lessened the need for a facility for unwed mothers to stay during their pregnancy.

In 1971, she moved to the Allegheny County Child Welfare Service's home-finding office, where she continued to facilitate adoptions until her retirement in 1979. For the next 16 years, the Sacred Heart Convent resident volunteered at Shadyside Hospital, mostly visiting families of people in intensive care. Declining health forced her to move to Forbes Nursing Center in 20th century math giant heimer, the mathematician John von Neumann and the logician Kurt Godel among them. In 1994, Mr. Weil won the equivalent of the Nobel Prize, which is not awarded in mathematics, when he received the Kyoto Prize in Basic Science from the Inamori Founda-' tion of Kyoto, Japan.

That award honored the part of his work known as the Weil Andre Weil, a former professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., whose work in algebraic geometry and number theory recast the basics of mathematics, died Aug. 6 in his home in Princeton. He was 92. At the institute, Mr. Weil was considered an intellectual peer of colleagues who were among the century's most influential scholars: Albert Einstein, J.
