Walsh Jazz Society presentation of American alto saxophonist Lee Konitz marks the first use of St David's Hall Castell Coch lounge os a professional venue This spodous Level Five areo complete with its own bar has the added attraction of a view of Cardiff's ever-changing city centre One could hardly think ot a more auspicious way to launch the venue than with the first Welsh solo appearance of Lea Konitz Unlike some Americon jazz visitors Konitz is a musician who is not only judged by his achievements in the past but is also considered a major creative force today In the late 'Forties he was involved in the emergence of "cod jazz" first with the orchestra of Claude Thornhill end then in Miles Davis's legendary Birth Of The Cool bond Testament Horse wanted with an eye on fame A stage-struck horse is needed for the forthcoming production of The Taming Of The Shrew due to be staged at Dyffryn Gardens this summer Director Mike Cunningham wants the horse for a five-minute walk-on part to transport antagonist Petruchio to his marriage scene during the production Mr Cunningham said the production calls for an old horse but its temperament is as important as its looks and it should not be frightened of crowds or bright lights we ask is that a local farmer or horse enthusiast can provide us with a suitable horse for the duration of the day from Monday July 28 to Saturday August He added that every effort would be made to stable the horse near Dyffryn Gardens during the production and the animal would be well looked after This play will be the fourth Shakespeare play staged at Dyffryn Gardens in successive years by the Everyman Theatre Company The plays are produced out of doors although this year there will be a canopy to shelter the audience from the weather The productions attract thousands of visitors each year and is one of the few opportunities to see Shakespeare being produced in the open air in Wales And for the first time ever theatregoers will be able to eijoy a complete package offering them tickets for the play a four-course dinner and an overnight stay In the new conference facilities at Dyffryn House said I would support it my only part In this has put the proms together from scratch I hope they will be a forerunner of many Welsh Proms Next year he said the Cardiff Tattoo would take place There were likely to be concerts either side of that event as well as opera For the last night expect Jerusalem That has been taken out of the programme because of sentiments deemed not quite Celtic Jam-balaya a a on the Jazs Society have assembled a programme which promises to firmly establish the seaside town on the jass map Much of the activity will take place on or near the Esplanade as well as in the public-houses and clubs Concerts will take place at the Paget Rooms and the Leisure Centre in Cogan while the showcase venue might prove to be The Kymin the grounds of which form a natural bowl overlooking the Bristol Channel The programme appears very enterprising and perhaps taking a leaf out of the Brecon Jazz book will feature a wide variety of musicians of all jazz persuasions with a substantial home-grown content Appearing Highlights on the Saturday will include a tremendous afternoon programme at The Kymin headlined by a musician who can claim to be the favourite trumpeter of both Count Basie and Frank Sinatra Harry Edison Also appearing will be the Ronnie Scott Quintet perhaps best known modem jazz musician and Forward Motion the International Quartet led by the young Scottish tenor-saxophonist Tommy Smith this group caused a minor sensation on their last visit to Cardiff There will also be two evening concerts that stirring combination of earthy African rhythms and urbane jazz that is Dudu Pukwana and Zila at the Paget Rooms and Penarth Jazz own celebration of Mike 40th year in business" when a night of New Orleans Carnival at him with pianist Geraint Watkins guitarist Graham Williams the Red Hot Pokers and the Adamant Brass Band Line-up Mike's band have another appearance as part of the Sunday afternoon Kymin session which also Includes a first-class New Orleans band drawn from the ranks of the London Ragtime Orchestra the Cardiff-based band who the next day will be heard on BBC Jazz in Britain North Wales's popular Keith and Marcia Pendlebury and the Byron Jones Swing Band Evening concerts will feature Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen who will need no introduction at the Leisure Centre and late booking which brings the leading jazz guitarist Joe Pass to Penarth for an appearance at The Kymin Full information about this exciting event can be obtained by sending stamped addressed envelope to Penarth Travel 2 Royal Buildings Stanwell Road Penarth Ticket prices seem very reasonable and a very positive gesture by the festival organisers allows children up to the age of 12 into the afternoon Kymin sessions free of charge as the brochure says: Summer sounds for all the family!
