Don't you think Jimmy Carter would hear from Lenny Brezhnev? Jimmy might tell Lenny that Nastase really belongs to him that a Roma nian subject But would that matter to Mr who could counter that Nastase carried out his attack in the United States while playing for Los Angeles? concerned that Los Angeles is asking for it by hiring a crazy Roma nian to do anything besides cook JERRY BUSS owner of the Strings was asked if he is aware of the possible international implica tions only thing aware of is that my team was 3 and 18 in the first half and we hope Hie can turn it around for us in the said Buss crowd will love However Buss did take several precautions in signing Nastasc to a three year contract at $200000 per season Nastase's contract with the Strings totals 36 pages many of which are made up of and Don'ts These netter were explained to me by Bart Chris tiansen the general manager of the Strings or instance if Nasty uses a four letter word he will be fined $200 A second offense costs $500 The problem is that Nastase can swear in seven different languages He could be home free in six His favorite tongue for profanity is one of the romance languages Italian and he knows all of the obscene gestures also But then so do most of us These carry fines too A much heavier fine will be levied if Nastase should take down his pants while performing for the Strings He has been known to do this as well Presumably Anita Bryant will be notified if there is a second outbreak of NASTASE MUST take special han dling because he was named to play in the All Star Game before he had made an appearance with the Strings I guess they just didn't want to make him sore by leaving him off even though he hadn't played for any team in the east or west The Soviets do much better than the Strings in the first half of WTT They were 6 and 16 The coach was fired and the whole team was recalkxl to Moscow instead of being allowed to compete individually at Wimbledon as in past years Strings owner Buss tells us going to love Nastasc that in truth he is nothing more than a pixie Sure so is Bette Midler Stan Smith is one tennis player who figure out Nastasc Every time Hie sees him he says you very much Stan The reason for it is this: Smith endorses Wilson products Nastase works for Addidas favorite racquet happens to be a Smith model Nas tase wraps the handle in Addidas trappings Maybe the guy is a pixie Either that or a nut tonight in Trophy winner Tony Dor sett plans to have better statistics than OJ Simpson in his first season in the NL as the Cowboys start training at Cal Lutheran College in Thousand Oaks The former Pittsburgh All Americasaid Monday he wants to gain more than 1500 yards in his rookie season with the Dallas Cowboys running back considers 1000 yards a good Dorsett said if I'm starting by our opening game I'm hop ing to surpass 1500 yards But first of all 1 have to make the starting unit think OJ Simpson was in a differ ent situation I was fortunate to be drafted by the Dallas Cowboyswith the peixonnel the Cowboys have I don't see any reason why I have a suc cessful first In rookie season with Buffalo in 1969 he gained only 697 yards when the Bills went 4 10 Simpson rushed for 188 yards and the Bills went 3 10 1 in 1970 Dorsett was the NL's No 2 draft choice and signed a rexrted five year $12 million contract but he said he expect any jealousy problems with Cow boy veterans because of his salary and publicity don't feel the veterans will give me a hard time at he said a mat ter of fact being in Dallas the last three weeks I had the opportunity to go to the practice facilities and work out with the veterans made not only myself but the other rookies feel very much at home in fact they welcomed us with open arms one has said anything about the money or the contract or me being a No 1 draft choice probably go through the same routine as the oilier Dorsett brushed aside an incident in a Dallas nightclub last Thursday A bar tender and a woman patron have filed charges of simple assault and he could be fined as much as $200 on each count really don't think that gets me off to a bad start with the people in he said wouldn't cause any problems or any trouble In that incident I was just protecting myself I look like a nice Seventy three players 64 rookies and nine young veterans are at the training camp here The quar terbacks and receivers are scheduled to arrive next Sunday California fires Sherry Garcia coaches come in ANAHEIM (UPI) The combination 7 11 is a lucky one in some games but it doesn't mean a thing in baseball At least not as far as former California Manager Norm Sherry is con cerned Sherry hired by the Angels to replace Dick Williams on July 23 1976 was fired on the eleventh dav of the seventh month of 1977 General Manager Harry Dalton hired third base coach Dave Garcia as the club's seventh manager and gave him a contract extending tlirough 1978 feel the team is definitely a con tending club and has the capability to move into the middle of the pennant race in the second half of the Dalton said And we felt that these changes would help us accomplish In related moves the Angels also: ired pitching coach Billy Muffett Named player coach Andy Etche barren as his interim successor and an nounced that someone else has been offered the job on a full time basis Hired rank Robinson first black manager as the club's first batting instructor Robinson had hired Garcia as his third base coach last sea son at Cleveland Sherry exited with a two season gJ Uutllfll I If Starr ree Press Tues July 12 1977 Sports 1 fr ('' Norm Sherry Dave Garcia record of 76 71 the best percentage ever compiled by an Angel manager His statistics this year were less im pressive After its fifth straight loss Sun day the club favored by most ob ervers to win the American League West was 39 42 9'4 games behind the Chicago White Sox was really Sherry said in a telephone conversation from his home in nearby Mission Viejo suggesting that injuries to key Angel players were more responsbile than 'anything else for their disappointing showing so far didn't expect this even after five losses in a row In the back of my mind I was worried what might happen if we lost four or five more at home just going to relax Harry offered me a job with the Angel organ ization but I wasn't paying much atten tion after he started the conversation off by firing Garcia 56 said Dalton called him to his office Monday morning "He offered me the job and I took he recalled hard to explain my feelings be cause I'm replacing a guy I really like But I wouldn't be honest if I didn't admit 1 wanted the opportunity" Garcia said he didn't know yet what he could do to turn the Angels' season around "1 I knew 1 would have suggsted it he explained hope 1 will be able to find out looking forward to trying got the players here just been a combina tion of Tale of 2 teams: One dead but one thriving By Woody Behrens The Santa Barbara Condors suffered an untimely death recently After barely two months in existence as an expansion franchise in the American Soccer League's Western Division severe finan cial problems have left the Condors ex tinct There are differing views on the exact cause of death whether it was Commentary financial homicide by the management and league or impatient suicide by the players But when the team folded after not being paid in nearly two months it marked a sharp contrast to the booming success of Santa other profes sional sports team the Spikers of the International Volleyball Association The two teams have been run in totally different manners Significantly one is thriving and the other is dead The birth was announced ahiut four months ago by general man ager Dave Whiteside of Westlake A for mer executive with the Los Angeles Skyhawks defending ASL champions Whiteside was now on his own with his very own club to work with With him from Los Angeles came two of the league's better players fullback Ron Yeats and goalie Brian Parkinson Whiteside named Yeats player coach and urged him to recruit the best he could find from his native England Yeats did a fine job landing seven Eng lish veterans to fill the league's foreign player quota But it also resulted in what Otto Radich a spokesman for ASL com missioner Bob Cousy called the highest payroll in the league The team played well in the opening weeks of the season and home attend ance averaged about 2000 This despite Whiteside's lack of promotion publicity and work at bringing in fans Apparently the GM was more con cerned with finding a business investor to replace a big one who pulled out just prior to the start of the season In the end it may have been the state wide search for one investor instead of a com munity quest for support that left the Condors broke The Spikers now in their third year in the IVA have consistently blitzed the city and surrounding area with an effective advertising campaign and sold hundreds of season tickets The team has brought an outlandish halftime promotion putting fans from the crowd across the net from a masked man who must pay cash if he cannot re turn a serve Public address announcers throughout the league have urged fans to let their emotions out and the normally placid populus of Santa Barbara has responded by going slightly berserk for the Spikers The team is hovering around the 500 mark in the IVA West but is staying near the top of the heap More importantly crowds are a constant 3000 in cozy Rob i ertson Gym almost capacity Both teams had large plusses upon entering Santa Barbara In their respec tive sports the two teams followed high ly successful youth and scholastic programs The Spikers entervd town just after the VCSB volleyball team made it to the NCAA championshins which it also hosted But the Spikers took full advantage of the home town pride and interest and the Condors did not The volleyball team played in the University gym has had several former UCSB All Americans on its roster No one will know for certain if the city could or would have supjxirtcd profes sional soccer had it been run differently But with the success of the volleyball Spikers there is strong evidence that a well run professional sports operation can definitely succeed Now there's room for another to try Cunningham to rely on advice LOS ANGELES (UPI) John Wood en regarded by most as the greatest coach in the history of college basketball will be coming out of retirement In a sense New UCLA coach Gary Cunningham indicated Monday tliat he will rely heavi ly on the advice of the man nicknamed the Wiziud of Westwood A 10 year Wooden assistant picked Saturday to replace Gene Bartow Cun ningham iqipeared at a news conference and made it clear he'll seek Wooden out1 as often as he feels necessary next sea son going to lie doing the best job I he said "but there will be times when I'm going to lie needing a little help the number of years he has in coaching no greater resource that I can have on this campus as coach Wooden To me that's a plus" Wooden retired after the 1975 season when he guided UCLA to its 10th NCAA championship in 12 years Cunningham was No 1 assistant in last four seasons and also played for the Bruins from I960 through 1962 UCLA athletic director I) Morgan liirixl Bartow two seasons ago and Bar tow compiled a 52 9 record winning two Pacific 8 titles However Bartow was under severe alumni fan and media pressure which reached its zenith after Idaho State upset the Bruins in the NCAA West Regionals in March On June 14 he resigned to become ath letic director and basketball coach at Alabama Birmingham a school which hasn't even played a basketball game yet and doesn't plan to play one next season either or the past two years Cunningham served as executive director of the UCLA Alumni Association Bartow preferred to be his own man and insiders said Bartow did not appreci ate Wooden's presence on the UCLA campus nor at Bruin basketball games since lie felt that only added pressure to a highly pressurized situation Smiling broadly Cunningham pointed out maintained his close ties with Wooden during the past two years very busy with his de clared the new Bruin mentor when on the campus we try to have break fast together once a week soon as I got the job I called him to express my appreciation to him for all the help and guidance he has given me over the years want Coach Wooden to feel as wel come as he can 1 want him to feel like he can drop by my office any time and he can come to practice any Chisox oldtimers to bring odd memories By Dave Anderson NY Times News Service NEW YORK When the Chicago White Sox hold their Oldtimers Day on Saturday the current team will not be awed by the guests for two reasons One the current White Sox are leading the American League West and two the invited White Sox oldtimers never led anything except perhaps themselves to slaughter At most oldtimers games many of the same faces reappear Joe DiMaggio Bobby Thomson and Ralph Branco Don Larsen Stan Musial and Mickey Mantle Vecck says got their own And so the White Sox entrepreneur who had a reputation for doing things differ ently in baseball long before Mark i drych even talked to his rattle will display names al Oldtimers Day that are engraved only on the memoryof thsoe who frequent South Side taverns not on Hall of ame plaques LaPalme for example and Howard Judson anil Manin Rotblatt and Dave Nicholson and Zeke Bonura a first baseman who once hit 315 for the White Sox and who had a lifetime 307 average But as a White Sox okltimer Zeke Bonura will be honored for all the grounders he never caught recalls Bill Veeck with a grin to lead the league in fielding be cause he never The other names are equally legendary to White Sox fans accustomed to letting the bad times roll La Palme a lit tle left handed pitcher had a 24 45 lifetime won lost record and with the seconds running on a curfew in Balti more one night he threw a strike hit it for a home run and the White Sox Bill Veeck says he had to do was throw the ball in the dirt and the curfew would have been im posed" Howard Judson a right hander estab lished a White Sox record in 1949 by los ing II consecutive games Marvin Rot blatt was a left hander with a 4 3 lifetime record threw as soft as Willie Sher dell Bill Veeck says "The only dif ference is Willie got people out Dave Nicholson set the White Sox record in 1963 for strikeouts in the season with 175 but he was one of the few to hit the ball up on the roof in left field Saved up all his All those oldtimers surely will receive standing ovations at White Sox Park loading the league in standing Bill Veeck says had five in sweep of the Twins for Jim Spencer Jim Essin Alan Bannister and two for Wilbur Wood the eighth inning and again in the ninth inning But the best one was riday night when Richie Zisk hit two home runs then struck out He got the standing ovation after he struck out I never saw that be Not many people remember seeing an all Chicago World Series but it happened in 191)6 when the Unless Wonder White Sox with a team batting average of 228 shocked the Cubs who had won a record 1 16 games But with the Cubs leading the National League East another all Chica go World Series could occur this year not thinking alxml that yet" Bill Veeck says just suffering through each game and savoring the victories When we bit the Twins last riday night the fans wouldn't leave the ball park It usually takes half an hour for the ball park to clear but an hour and a half after the game there were still some fans hanging around yelling No when Bob and 1 finally left" Bob Lemon the Yankees' pitching coach last season is the White Sox man ager "He's calm and Bill Vecck says night Bart Johnson walked the bases loaded then walked in the win ning run but all Bob said was know how tough it is in that spot I've been The plavers love him Some people in Chicago question whether the White Sox can hold off the: Twins and the Texas Rangers and the Kansas City Royals and the California Angels But even more question the ability to stay in front of the Pitts burgh Pirates and the Philadelphia Phillies for what Would be their first title since the 1945 National kague pennant Cynics remember how the Cubs folded in 1969 when the Mobs came on to win their first pennant says Bruce Sutter the bullpen ace "it seems like the peo ple here are hoping fold so they can say told you But this is a com pletcly different team".
