John Brownlee who now resides In Belle Fourche Is in Lead for a few days making repairs on his residence property on south Main street Jack says he and his family like Belle Fourche and that he Is doing well. A. Kellar yesterday afternoon took charge of the Smead hotel, and it will be conducted under his man agement hereafter. It Is said that Mr. Keelar is experienced in the business.

Yesterday morning a gang of Burlington men began picking up the low points on the trolley line through the city, and when the work shall have been completed there will not be a bump or a jolt on the entire system. William Nelk has returned from a trip to Chicago, where he went some time ago on a purchasing trip for his department In the brick store. Fred Vercillino, who has been working in the offices of the Western Union Telegraph company at Dead-wood, will hereafter be stationed at Lead, as assistant to Manager Nov-arla of the Lead office. Max Newcomb had the membors of his team of All Stars out Wednesday evening taking the stiffness out of their Joints and limbering them up for the contest which they will engage in Saturday with the High school eleven.

The former football players are showing up better with each evening of practice, and the High school eleven are beginning to consider and to think things over. Tommy Seperac yesterday morning fell. in an epileptic fit on upper Main street and was badly bruised In the fall which he suffered. He was taken home and a physician summoned who gave him treatment. Last evening the young man was reported to have recovered Somewhat from the fit, which was a severe one.

August Holverson, the sage of Hell Gate, was in the city visiting with friends and laying in supplies. He says that the fall weather has driven most of the fishermen off the Spearfish creek, but that a few still linger and are being rewarded with good catches. Mr. Holverson returned to his home yesterday afternoon, it being a nice little walk for him. Wednesday afternoon the brick layers began work on the new school! building, and as there is a large force engaged on the job, the walls will soon be mounting skyward, and it is hoped to have the roof on the structure before the real cold weather and the deep snows of winter begin.

There has already been delivered at the site of the building a large Quantity of material, structural steel, tilings, lumber and brick and there is now nothing in the way of the work progressing as fast as good work-j manship will allow. Adjourned For a Week Wednesday evening the regular meeting of the former volunteer Are department was held in the parlors of Hose house No. 1, on Bleeker street. There was not a very large at tendance of the department members present, so it was decided to postpone the consideration of several matters that the members have under dis cussion until next Wednesday when they will be taken up and disposed of. One of the matters was the drawing up of suitable resolutions on the death of T.

J. Orler, late superintendent of the Homestake Mining com pany, whose friendship for the volun teers in times passed had been such that the boys believed that they should try and show something of the regard in which he is held by them all, for he was ever ready to assist them and to give them credit for the services which they had rendered the city. To this a committee was ap pointed to draft resolutions and to make its report at the meeting to be held on Wednesday evening next. After the discussion of several other matters in an informal way, adjournment was taken. The meeting was presided over by First Assistant Gravell.

Killed Her Cow A few days ago Mrs. Gus King-strom, who lives on the summit of South Lead hill, missed one of her milch cows, and began a systematic search of the hillsides in that neighborhood, and Wednesday afternoon found the cow lying dead about a half mile from any habitation, on one of the steep hillsides. The animal had been wounded by a shot from a shotgun, some of the pellets from which had entered its spinal column and caused death. Mrs. Kingstrom had depended upon them to help make a livelihood, but it is evident that there is some one in the neigh borhood who- is doing his best to take that means of making a little ture at the Deadwood Theatre Wednesday, Oct.

Back From Sweden Mrs. Alex Stewart, who has been spending several months in the old country, returned to her home in the Hills and says that Lead is the best of all places in which to live after her experiences in Sweden. Although she has bad a very pleasant visit with her relatives and friends. While Sweden Is neutral yet the close proximity to the area of activity made the subject of war an intense one. War seemed to permeate the atmosphere and to enter into all of the things of life that nothing else was talked of and that it really possessed all classes of people.

She Is pleased to be again back in the United States and Lead, where the industries of life flow along uninterrupted and the tranquility of the people Is not dis turbed by wars and rumors of wars. Mrs. Stewart has returned in the best of health, and declares that she had a most pleasant journey across the Atlantic ocean. FORMER STATE AUDITOR DEAD GROTON, Oct. 1.

Halted in the midst of a busy life, J. D. Reeves, former state auditor, beloved of all and one of Groton's leading citizens, died suddenly on Main street Tuesday. Walking along the street with his wife, Mr. Reeves turned to her and said that he did not feel well.

She suggested that they get into an automobile and go home, but before this could be done, he became worse and sat down upon the curb for relief and In a moment fell backward dead. Every effort was made by eager friends to bring him back to consciousness but all failed. The shock of his passing brought a cloud of the utmost grief and sor row upon the entire community. As men discussed the tragic event tears fell from their eyes as their minds recalled their friend and the sense of their personal loss was borne In upon them. Business throughout the city was suspended during the day and many business houses will be closed at the time of the funeral.

JANE ADDAM8 COMING Miss Jane Addams of Hull house. Chicago, who has endeared herself to the people of this country by her benevolent work, will deliver a lec the cows has been shot, all but the-one which was killed having been shot through the udder, some of them at close range, ruining them as milch cows. Mrs. Kingstrom has been urged by her neighbors to take some action and to complain to the authorities, for the neighbors say it is pretty well known who has been wounding her cows, and that they will assist In his prosecution if anything like good evidence can be brought against him. It is a pretty mean way to work out ones spite, and the person suspected, if guilty should receive such punishment that it 'will deter him in the future from taking such cowardly methods of revenge.

Elks' Big Minstrels The Elks had their final rehearsal Wednesday night with the orchestra, and everything Is in readiness for the big minstrels, which will appear at the Homestake opera house tonight and Saturday night. The eight end-men who will appear In the circle are Jim Jelbert, "Dee" La Breche, Monte Ellis, Bert Flisness, "Vlnce" Murphy, John Moye, Earl Johnson and Will Samuels, with Ralph Eldridge acting as interlocutor. The ballad singers, who will present unusually catchy numbers are: W. E. Kllminster, Peter Mclntyre, Ray Lap- pin and Theodore Ecker. Dancing will be a big feature and about twenty dancers will appear in the performance, led by "Vince" Murphy and Clint Draper, who will each do solo dances.

The chorus is large and well balanced and will assist the soloists and end-men in the vocal numbers. Fun will be the keynote and from the minute the show starts until Its finish, there will be no dull moments as the jokes are up-to-date and deal entirely with local people and conditions.
