NORTHWEST ARKANSAS TIMES, Arfcaniai, Friday, September 7, 1962. 13B Right tickle James II a 1 was a starter last year. Two Ict- termen, Chris Mooro and Norman Autrey, ire battling for the other starting berth. Mitchell Hankins is sure to see a lot of action when he gets well. The other candidates are Jack Franklin, Jerry Winchester.

Scott Foncs, Dell Moad and John Brasher. Jerry Hickman is the only letterman back at guard. squadmen Bill White, Stanley. Spicer and Nahdeen Albrecht -are battling for the other starting berth. With Campbell out, the center duties will fall on Henry Wei- boum, an all-around player who saw service at center, end and guard last year.

Welbourn was a starter on defense. His understudy will be David Mabrey, a junior, up from last year's squad. Right now It appears that the two weakest spots in the Mountaineer lineup will bo at guard and center where there is a lack of depth behind experienced players. Last year was ttie first time since taking over as head coach at Rogers that Tillery has ever lost a game. Bond tasted his first defeat when Rogers fell 7-0 before Bcntonville in tile second game of the season.

Up until that defeat, the Mountaineers had won 16 games in a row and tied three. The win streak began in 1999 when the Mourities won seven, lost none and tied two. In 1960 the Mounties won nine, suffered no losses and were tied by Fayetteville and Van Buren. Last year Rogers was tied 6-6 by Siloam Springs before los ing to Bentonville. Of High Finish In 1962 Pre-Season Injuries Dim Hopes At Rogers By MIKE HILL (TIMES Sports Editor) ROGERS Pre-season injuries to four lettermen and sickness and injury of two others since the season opens put a damper on hopes of the Rogers Mountaineers to regain their place in the "sun" in District 1AA this fall. But outside of Rogers there arc several district coaches who fear the Mountaineers. fear the Mountaineers. "Rogers is rebuilding and last year they had a 3-6-1 record but you can look for Ihe Mounties to be real tough this year," one coach said. Still another coach rated Rogers to win the flag this year.

Tlie key prc-scason injuries that hurt Rogers started last a Nicky Nichols, a two-year letterman in the backficld and a senior, came up with a knee injurj hurt while playing baseball. Tom Ross, a 1960 letterman at end, suffered a brain concussion early last season, and did not play Ir the last half, He will be, out this year too. Jim Campbell, a two pear leltcrman at center, suffered a back injury last week and left tlie squad for the rest of the season. John White, a letlcrman lackle, suffered an ear injury and had to drop football. Addire; to Tillery's worries are Ihe fact that promising halfback Jim Winchester suffered a badly sprained ankle and soph tackle Mitdiell Hankins came down with leputitis and may not see.

action or three or four weeks after the opens. But there are some bright spots the outlook for Rogers this rear. The strongest point is the fact hat three of the four returning ctlermen in the backfield were starters last season. Quarterback Herman Wilkinson, one of the best assers in 1AA last season; full- jack Rick Gilliam, a plunger who averaged five yards per try last season; and Halfback Bob Smith, a good runner, are back. The oth er letterman, Larry Fields, started on defense.

A promising soph, David Swear- mgen, is understudying Wilkinson at quarterback. Behind Gilliam are four fullback candidates -Dennis Price, Elton A Doug Scoggins and Rick Littrell-with Littrell rated the best sopt cantJidafc. Battling hard for a starting berth at halfback before he was njured was Jim Winchester. He ias been clocked at 10.6 runnini he 100-yard dash. Fields a Ken clocked at 10.8 and i Pickens, a junior w'ho was on the squad last year, runs it in 10.6.

"Despite all of the early injuries we still have a sound backfield," Tillery said. "Smith lias looking exceptionally well and has lots of hustle. Gilliam and Wilkinson are in a class by them selves," he added. At right end, Randy Heed, i starter is back this year to team along with another a Donny Beavers. Both are seniors and have lettered once.

Five soph candidates are battling for the No 2 and No. 3 jobs behind the two starters. They include i i Jenkins, Freddy Jones, a Harris, Butch Lester and Davic Wilkerson. Lester is a transfer from Dallas, Wilkerson has no experience, Harris was a jun ior high squadman while Jenkins and Jones won junior high letters Jolin Brasher Jerry Hickman Bill While Stanley Spicer Mahdeen Albrecht Henry Wclburn David Mabrey Herman Wilkinson David Swearlngen Larry Fields Bobby Smith Jim Winchester Jim Pickens Rick Gilliam Dennis Price Elton McAdoo Doug Scoggins Rick Littrell C-G QB QB HB HB HB HB FB FB FB FB FB 150 165 145 160 150 150 150 175 135 160 160 135 145 160 150 150 155 140 5-10 5-11 5-10 6-0 5-9 5-11 6-10 6-1 5-10 5-10 6-0 5-9 5-10 5-11 5-11 5-11 5-10 5-10 Senior Junior Senior Junior Junior Senior Junior Junior Soph Senior Senior Soph Junior Senior Soph Junior Junior Soph SQ 1VL SQ SQ SQ 2VL SQ 1VL JHL 1VL 2VL JHL SQ 1VL JVL SQ Trans.
