found nearby The machine had flown from Washington DC in Jess than four hours A burst of flame seen for miles attracted hundreds and before dawn souvenir hunters are reported to have carried off motor and navica tion instruments and innumerable parts which might have given investigators a clue to the trouble that cost the flier his life Two machine guns which had been 1 mounted in the cabin of the tiny all metal craft were seen by farmers among the scattered debris A few minutes later they disappeared Provincial Officer William Markle of Glencoe ound they had been taken by two residents for Bowling ield DC today told The Star by telephone that he was flying some distance ahead and above airplane He did not learn of the crash until he had made a safe landing at the munici pal airport in Buffalo he said ran into a bad storm south east of Pilot Chevault said minute we hit it I figured that by getting altitude I might get above what appeared to be a low rainy ceiling I got up to 1000 feet and could see clear and flew on by compass and my instrument board I knew it was a bad storm but as I was some distance ahead of the other plane and knew Breathitt to be an experienced able flier the American authori ties Washington ordered the US consul at Windsor to make neces sary arrangements for the release of body and the wreckage of the airplane but this had already been prearranged The body was removed to Mount Clemens Sunday afternoon and the inquest stands adjourned sine die awaiting the re sult of the usual inquiry conducted by Canadian army aviation authori ties in all wrecks On Special Mission lying orders In pockets indicated he was flying a Seversky of the high speed pursuit squadron said to be capable of 250 miles an hour The orders stated he was to fly to Bolling ield Wash ington DC a special A second ship accompanied him They were to leave Selfridge ield Mount Clemens for "Washington at 12 noon riday and the return orders were to leave Bolling ield Washington at 5 pm (EST) Saturday our hours after that time farmers in the vicinity were startled to hear the roar of a powerful motor flying close over the house tops John Rankin whose home is near Appin said the ship flew so low thought he would strike my It had rained incessantly since noon and highway traffic was pro ceeding with great difficulty Sud denly the countryside was illumin ated by a huge red flare It came from the edge of a bush on the back of the Lee Simpson farm lot 18 concession 2 Ekfred Cameron McTaggart whose farm abuts the Simpson farm said he heard the crash in his house and accompanied by his hired man ran back through the woods and was first on the scene was a terrific crash and evidently an he said fire lighted everything for only a few seconds then died away and discovered still strapped in his seat The other wheel vras in the pond Stumps where the air plane took the first plunge marked where torn electric wires exploded the gasoline tanks They burned all day
