The Sun SUNDAY, May 19, 1991 1 Mavs continue their dominance of Spirit By KAL RUCKER Sun Sports Writer SAN BERNARDINO The Spirit continues to play ball the home crowd is unaccustomed to watching. High Desert pounded the San Bernardino Spirit, 16-5, Saturday night before 3,534 fans at Fiscalini Field. The Mavericks used a wellrounded attack to hand the Spirit its fourth consecutive defeat. High Desert has won the first two games of the three-game series and 4-of-5 overall against San Bernardino. High Desert improved to 18- 20 and increased its lead over the Spirit for third place in the Southern Division to four games.

The Spirit (14-24) dropped 10 games under .500 for its slowest start in its five-year history, including the first year when an independent team was on the field. The 16 runs given up were the most yielded by the Spirit this season. Half of the runs came in the first inning. The frustration may have taken its toll on Spirit manager Tommy Jones, who was thrown out of the game after wrestling with Mavericks coach Lonnie Keeter in the second inning. The incident came after High Desert hitter Ozzie Sanchez was hit with a pitch.

Keeter and Sanchez were also tossed. much rather be discussing a great-played game than the ridiculous situation that developed," said Jones. While the game may have had some drama due to tension, the Mavericks ended most of the suspense by scoring eight runs in the top of the first inning. Spirit starter Scott Pitcher (2- 3) lasted two-thirds of an inning and was charged with seven of the runs. Three were earned.

J.D. Noland had a good night in the first inning. He went 2-for-2 with two runs and capped the scoring with a three-run homer. High Desert didn't let up on the Spirit relievers. The Mavs put up a pair of runs in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

The only Spirit pitcher to keep the Mavs off the board was Bryan King, normally a shortstop who made his second blowout appearance and pitched the ninth inning. Brian McKeon (4-2) was the recipient of the Mavericks offensive explosion. McKeon went innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits. Spirit-Mavericks feud erupts into on-field brawl By KAL RUCKER Sun Sports Writer SAN BERNARDINO Now this is a rivalry. Until Saturday, the main rivalry between San Bernardino County's two pro baseball teams may have been at the gate or in the stands.

The fifth game between the High Desert Mavericks and San Bernardino Spirit produced some heat, in the form of a benchesclearing rhubarb. The Mavericks frustrated San Bernardino with eight runs in the first inning. In the second inning, Ozzie Sanchez hit a long foul ball, then was hit by Spirit pitcher Todd Youngblood. Sanchez took his time walking to first base. After he got there, first-base coach Lonnie Keeter came out of his box and walked toward the Spirit dugout, talking and gesturing.

Spirit manager Tommy Jones charged out of the dugout and tackled Keeter, prompting the benches to empty. "At that point the emotions of the first inning just surfaced," Jones said. "Everyone got caught up in the excitement of the moment. A lot of things were said that shouldn't have been said." Said Keeeter: "I was just trying to keep (Jones) from talking to our player. Their manager had no business talking to our player.

I told him that and he charged me. There's no place in the game for a guy like that. He's crazy." Umpires Brian Laxamana and Mike Whitty deemed there was no place in the rest of the game for Jones, Keeter and Sanchez. "'It was an ugly incident," Mavs manager Bruce Bochy said. "There's really no place for it.

That's 1 not what we're here for." Cal league notes Spirit relief pitchers Darin Loe (sore back) and Dennis Jones (stiff shoulder) were placed on the disabled list. San Diego left-hander Atlee Hammaker (0-0, 2.25 ERA) is scheduled to make his second rehabilitation start for High Desert this afternoon. Jeff Darwin (2-3, 5.59) is slated to oppose Hammaker in the 1:05 game. CALIFORNIA LEAGUE STATISTICS Complete Through Games of Friday TEAM BATTING HR BB SO SB Avg.
