MONDAY, October 3, 1994 The Sun C3 Montreal edges Salsa in semifinals shootout in HI fir i.i -li I Tj into the hands of Harrington, who couldn't hold on as he watched the ball squirt through his arms and into the goal. On his second goal, Paulinho scored when he redirected a crossing pass from Allnutt past Harrington. Harrington held off the aggressive Salsa offense in the mini game to force the shootout. Even those who decided on a mini game and a shootout aren't happy with it. "I was on the committee to decide on this and that's how I voted," Davis said.

"If economics were different, I would have voted for a third game. "In this scenario and on this particular night, Montreal won. Any other night, it might have been the Salsa. But they won and all you can do is wish them luck." said. "It wasn't Mike's fault, he was great.

We just had enough luck to win." Harrington wasn't as lucky in the opening game. Salsa midfielder Thor Lee scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 40th minute of the Salsa's 3-0 opening-game victory. Impact midfielder Marco Rizi had two chances to tie the game early in the second half managing only to hit the left post of the Salsa goal both times. Salsa midfielder, Paulinho, put the opening game away with two goals in the final 12 minutes. Paulinho scored off a direct free kick in the 78th minute after he was fouled by the Impact's Rudy Doliscat.

Soccer still has life in the United States in the wake of the World Cup though just barely. A crowd of 6,002 at Cal State Ful-lerton's Titan Stadium watched as the host Los Angeles Salsa was eliminated from the APSL playoffs by the Montreal Impact, 2-1, in a seven-round shootout which followed a scoreless 30-minute mini game. The Salsa forced the mini game by ty ing the series 1-1 with a 3-0 victory earlier in the day. Because the league does not have the financial stability to hold a three-game playoff series, the semifinals were limited to two games.

The Impact took Game 1 with a 2-1 victory on Friday in Montreal. The Impact will host the one-game championship on Oct. 15 against the Colorado Foxes, who advanced Sunday after a shootout against the host Seattle Sounders. "If you want to know how I feel you could rind the Quotes from the Italian team and that's now I feel," Salsa coach Kick Davis said. The Italians lost the World Cup this summer to Brazil, also in a shootout.

After the mandatory Ave rounds of shootout, each team had made just one goal forcing sudden death. In the seventh round, Montreal's Patrick Diotte scored just under the outstretched arm of Salsa goalkeeper Mike Littman. Salsa midfielder Yari Allnutt missed his attempt wide right sending the Montreal players into a celebration around goalie Pat Harrington. Harrington made three saves off his chest in the shootout, in which the shooter has five seconds to drive on the goalie from 35 yards out. Twice, the Salsa shot wide and once the team was called for a five-second delay.

"It came down to me and Mike (Littman) and we got the goal," Harrington G. Bodine's up-and-down year continues with his 3rd win Imm ii a r. -z 1 tm Br sears sbw 1 ev i turn just in front of Gant. Cory McClena-than, Cruz Pedregon, Scott Geof-frion and David Schultz won professional driving titles Sunday at the NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals. McClenathan won in Top Fuel, Pedregon in Funny Car, Geoffrion in Pro Stock and Schultz in Pro Stock Motorcycle at Heartland Park. McClenathan, of Placentia, edged Don Prudhomme for his second Top Fuel victory this season, while Moorpark's Pedregon surprised John Force in the Funny Car final. ERMOLENKO RETAINS TITLE: Motorcycle racer Sam Ermolen-ko of Cypress defended his U.S. speedway national championship Saturday night before 8,723 at the Orange Cunty Fairgrounds, salvaging a disappointing season.

"My season has been below average," said Ermolenko, who seriously injured his leg in a crash two weeks after winning last year's national title. "But I worked my butt off to rehab to the point where I could sort of fake my way through this season." From Sun News Services NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. Talk about a topsy-turvy year. Geoff Bodine doesn't know how to feel any more. Bodine lapped the field at North Wilkesboro Speedway on Sunday in winning the Tyson-Holly Farms 400.

It was the third victory of the season for what is basically a first-year team, considering that Bodine and wife Kathi bought the equipment from the estate of the late Alan Kulwicki midway through last season. But they did keep most of that team's personnel, including crew chief Paul Andrews. Early in the season, the team was plagued with engine failures and crashes. Then came the bumping incident with brother Brett at Indianapolis that brought a family feud to the surface. Now that he's in the midst of a well-publicized divorce, Bodine is not able to stay as focused on the team's development as he would like.

"What really has me pleased about this season is the team," Bodine said after wrapping up the 17th victory of his NASCAR Winston Cup career. "They have been with me through the good and the bad. Most of them have been through a lot more bad than me, with what happened last year (Kulwicki dying in a plane crash)." Motor racing Bodine's crew gave him an almost-perfect car Sunday. He led 335 of 400 laps on the '-mile oval, becoming the first driver to win by more than a lap since Harry Gant won in 1991 at Dover, Del. Terry Labonte, who won the April race at North Wilkesboro, finished second.

He passed Bodine's Ford Thunderbird to regain his lost lap on lap 366, but he fell back again as Bodine shot past on lap 382. "We just got outrun," Labonte said. "Our car was really good on longer runs, but I guess the No. 7 (Bodine) was, too." In the Winston Cup championship race. Rusty Wallace was unable to make up an unscheduled tire stop that put his pit stops out of sequence early in the race.

He wound up behind third-place Rick Mast at the end, while a late-race incident cost Dale Earnhardt some valuable ground as he slipped to seventh, two laps behind the winner. Earnhardt, who led early in the 400-lap race, got the five-point bonus for leading at least one lap and lost just nine points to Wallace, who now trails by 208 with four races remaining. "I'd like to have him fight three times a year, but he won't take easy fights and it's hard to get the top guys to fight him," promoter Dan Duva said Sunday in the wake of the WBC welterweight champion's convincing victory over James "Buddy" McGirt.

One top guy very much on Whitaker's mind is Julio Cesar Chavez. "There Is really no one but Chavez," Whitaker said. When asked about the chances for a rematch with Chavez, Duva said, "Zero, because he's not man enough." Chavez is promoted by Duva's rival Don King. Open To The Public ,4 THROWOUT UARINO. When the lea-handed Whitaker won the 147-pound title from McGirt on March 6, 1993, in Madison Square Garden, McGirt claimed he lost because he was a one-armed fighter. A week after the match, he had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder. McGirt said his left shoulder and arm were fine for the rematch, but he threw few left hooks and was not effective with his jab. The reason was Whitaker. "I just took the left hand away from him," said Whitaker, who kept McGirt off-balance with hard right jabs.

He also took away the 30-year-old challenger's legs with smashing blows to the body. McGirt knocked down Whitaker with a 1-2 in the second round and was in the fight for the first six. From then on, it was all Whitaker, who landed 330 punches to 154 for McGirt. According to CompuBox, McGirt landed just 24 punches in the last four rounds while being punched to the point of exhaustion. "He was the better man," said McGirt, his left eye almost closed.
