The Upper Des Moinea-Republican, Kovember 12,1930 Twenty Years Ago. The Whlttemore Champion had reported that Albert Es*er had purchased a fifty horse power, five passenger Bulck auto for $2,000 from H. J. Wll- Son of Algona. Ralph, Peterson, son of Photographer and Mrs. A. L. Peterson and Ed. Clarke had attended the football game at Ames between Ames and Iowa City University. The boys were both enthusiastic admirers of the game. T. P. Harrington, M. P. Haggard, Al Falkenhatner, J. W. Shearer and Frank Clark comprised a party of Al- gonlans who were interested observers of the Roosevelt demonstration given at Des Molnes during the teachers' meeting. In the Kossuth county politics Carroll was running ahead for governor by an estimated majority of around 125. C. B. HUtchlns for state representative, B. E. Norton for county auditor, Fred Anderson for county treasurer, G. A. Brunson for sheriff, republicans and Frank Henderson, for recorder, democrat were assured winners, having a strong lead over their opponents. What was known as the Wadsworth farm, of 338 acres, a few miles west of Algona, near Hobart, had been sold for an even $33,000. Phillip Hargreaves of Illinois was the purchaser and he was planning to make the place his home. At the time the item was written Mr. Hargreaves was planning to move his family, consisting of wife and seven children out here In the following March. Mr. Hargreaves had just sold his home place for $210 per acre, and was looking for a larger tract of land. Mr. Hargreaves was the kind of a man Kossuth county people were more than glad to welcome among them and in the twenty years that have elapsed since the Hargreaves family came here they have been among our finest citizens. The farm belonged to Henry and J. W. Wadsworth and the sale was effected through Danson & Butler. The town of Bancroft was all agog over the robbery at the Farmers & Traders Savings Bank of that city. Robbers had gained entrance to the bank, blown the safe and secured $4,000 In cash with which they escaped. The bandits broke into the section house and got a sledge hammer and broke into John Goetzlnger's blacksmith shop and got the rest of the tools which they used. They broke the knob of the vault door with the sledge hammer and then introduced nitro glycerine and blew the locks off from the door and later cracked the safe inside the vault. The robbers were careful not to take any papers that could be identified and left the drafts, checks, and money orders all intact. President Lenander was in Colorado at the time and Cashier Lonergan did everything possible to notify all the authorities. The bank was fully insured, and they will not have any loss but a great deal of inconvenience. A man was arrested in Dallas county, was taken to Des Moines where he was held under suspicion, but he was later freed because of insufficient evidence. W. A. Ladendorf, who was at the time deputy sheriff, had had an exciting ride in t&e jrauntry when, the rig which, he hadl hired from F. A. Jenks, the Ledyard liveryman, caught fire and . burned up. The trip was being made oniflfflcial business and after getting " out of town a 1 mile, and while driving along' pondering on the vlsclssitudes and uncertainties of political life and wondering whether Glen would have 200 or 300 majority, Mr. Ladendorf was awakened from his musings by .a glowing warmth at the rear that Teminded him of Dr. Morse's patent •electric substitute for a hot water bottle. On turning his head he found the whole rear of the buggy to be In flames, likewise his nether garments •were burning. The fire had reached such a stage that Billy was unable to put it out, and he hastily unhitched the team from the burning buggy and turned In an alarm for the Ledyard fire department. The flames crackled merrily and soon the top and box were reduced to ashes. The origin of the catastrophe was a mystery. One theory that gained some support was that Billy was smoking and a spark from his cigar caught and ignited the inflammable buggy top with the fatal results to it and a close call for the deputy sheriff.
