died a natural or a fatal However vague anyone may be of what goes on at a coroner's court the facts can be found in an entertaining and instructive book Open by Mr A Williams former Hertford and district coroner for 28 years The book is published by Oycz Publications price 176 It is not written ii dusty legal language and therefore it is of great interest to the casual reader Yet it covers eVery aspect of a coroner's work and should be a must for law students Because it also examines possible changes in the set-up of the office of coroner it should be of interest to lawyers for Mr Williams speaks with a weight of experience behind him Mr Williams's book is personalised and it will be of particular interest to the people of Hertford because here is a record of a man who has lived and worked among them for many years TRIBUTE TO PRESS It contains a tribute to the local Press when he says: Perhaps the local Press work to higher standards than the national papers I found their discretion infallible The police and I trusted them with numerous confidences which they never Mr Williams points the value of inquests when he describes how he arranged to give the widest publicity to the inquiry into the death of five children in a fire at Ware seven years ago As a result legislation was rushed through Parliament to ensure the safety of oil heaters Yet he thinks that reform of the jury system is overdue He points out that the jury cannot charge anvone with the new crime of killing by reckless or dangerous driving He thinks that inquest juries should be abolished because they waste many man hours He also believes that the present easy going way of appointing coroners should be subject to drastic reform Coroners should loo be subject to some system of inspection and control The office of coroner is one of the oldest of all English institutions and yet few people know of its true functions The book should remedy this and if it should bring much needed reforms so much the better HERTFORDSHIRE MERCURY ai Coaaty Pres Series Incorporating The Hertfordshire Graphic Cbeabaat iri Waltham Mewj Head OSce: PO Box 19 1 FORE STREET HERTFORD Tekyboae Heritor 25467B FRIDAY MAY 12 1967 Co-operation brings results (or town yiTH co-operation all along the line Hoddesdon Urban Council has shown the way to improve shopping facilities for its residents For the opening of the Heron shopping precinct in Hoddesdon on Monday has put the town in the four-star class of shopping towns in Hertfordshire None in East Herts can boast such an array of new shop buildings and now perhaps none will be able to emulate them How did Hoddesdon get into this top position It was undoubtedly as Councillor Leslie Eyre the Hoddesdon council chairman explained on Monday the co-operation and more which brought results It was a bare five years ago that Heron wrote to the council that they were negotiating with owners of properties in the area Within five months the council received first details of the scheme The of the tower block was celebrated 1 1 months ago and this last week a plaque was unveiled to signify the official opening Hoddesdon's achievement should be a lesson to other local authorities seeking to develop their own shopping areas Whereas elsewhere in several parts of East Herts developers have been thwarted at every move Hoddesdon has welcomed them The result is a pleasing development which has put the town shopping-wise in the forefront of East Herts ROAD SAFETY yiTH the road toll particularly of the young showing no signs of diminishing too much emphasis cannot be placed on the importance of road safety training Cheshunt and Waltham Cross are to be commended therefore for organising a road safety week to be held later this month During that week many activities connected with road safety will be driving and cycling proficiency tests demonstrations and quizzes All play an invaluable part in the concerted training necessary to make our roads safer for those who walk or drive on them But are they enough Can anything else be done Local authorities are clearly doing their utmost The individual has to do the with
