will press for drug testing even though the tests probably do violate privacy In the meantime at least one school suspended its drug testing program and NCAA lawyers prepared to appeal Wednesday's ruling by Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Conrad Rushing that declared the NCAA program unconstitutional are disappointed with the California court's ruling concerning only Stanford NCAA Executive Director Richard Schultz said should be noted that a federal court in Seattle Wash has refused to enjoin the same drug testing program ruling that there was no invasion of any constitutionally protected right of a student athlete's requiring invalida tion of the NCAA drug testing program" The ruling applies only to Stanford But it could be used as a precedent if other legal challenges are raised "The right to engage in NCAA competition is not a right guaranteed by Craven the US NCAA President Wilford Bailey said a privilege And if an individual wishes to compete in NCAA championship events the individual must be prepared to comply with the rules estab lished by the "In light of the legal climate right now I ordered the testing part of our program to be held up said Don Combs athletic director at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond Ky were bringing in freshmen this week in football and volleyball and were going to have drug testing But the legal climate does not appear to be favorable at this time We will continue the educational part of the program" Bailey and other NCAA officials said they knew of no other school that had put its drug testing program on hold Rushing held it is unconstitutional for the NCAA to test Stanford ath letes for drugs He said the testing "invades student and that it with the right to treat themselves with appro priate over the counter medications as other students do" rom page Bl year approximately $2000 She also received an $800 scholarship from the American Associa tion of University Women to offset the tuition expenses She almost ran into a snag when the OSU admissions department wrote to her about her SAT scores which they hadn't received Unlike so many other talented high school athletes though she caught by Prop 48 requirements (minimum 700 score for freshman eligibility in the NCAA) Craven scored 1 160 on the test bad for an athlete" she said of her score Not bad for any body Among the heavy recruiters OSU was Cra ven's first choice all along "I like the coach really laid back He doesn't push you He wants to make sure you don't get burned The Cowboys also boast the NCAA runner up in women's cross country with New Zealander Jackie Goodman who runs the 5000 meters (31 miles) in 15:41 Craven is hoping to please Weis with continued steady improvement After her high school competition Craven ran in the prestigious Golden West Invitational meet in Sacramento She has been grinding out seven to eight miles six days a week with Camarillo assistant track and cross country coach Charlie Carranza to prepare for the upcoming cross country season "They sent me some guidelines for my work outs what I'm supposed to do" she said stepped up my average by about two miles from last summer The workouts feel a lot harder but I know I'm "The main thing is she got her endurance up" Carranza said On Craven's turnabout from longer distances to the mile Carranza said did speed work at the end of her senior year It worked out fine but I think maybe I should have worked on it earlier why I think going to do better in college be running 4:50 by the end of her first year" speed work involved running a se ries of 400 meter sprints six to eight reps during a workout He also had her running up hills to develop leg muscle What happened to the lazy fifth grader who felt coaches were being mean by making her run? not that she said "Once you get going once moving it's not that bad Don't you think the hardest part of running is the first few steps? Once you're out there "Charlie (Carranza) always says the reason he runs is because it feels so good when he stops He says the hardest part is thinking about it" Carranza who ran shorter distances (660 880 yards) at Camarillo High and UC Berkeley in the '60s noted that the saying is older than Craven adding "Never ask your body for a vote (on whether to run or not) "Obviously the older you are the better you adapt to speed work You need to be stronger but more stressful too At least what been reading" Craven started lifting weights following her junior cross country season bulking up by about 10 pounds "1 really have that much mus cle It was just skin and then the bone "The muscle has really helped a lot especially in the arms You run with your legs but your arms help you so Craven also received a boost of confidence early in the year when she finished fourth in the 4A cross country finals "That was the time I really improved a lot and felt the most confident That was a turning point I had a good time and the college coaches started talking to me" Then she ran two seconds behind state cross country champion Deena Drossin of Agoura in the Santa Barbara Relays two mile "I'd never been that close to her before" Craven said "I knew I was going to have a good year "I ran next to her at the mile in CI I said know 1 can beat her' and sprinted the last 200 yards I got some kind of a kick in the mile I know where I got it I never had it before this Craven credits Carranza for improving her two mile time from 12:20 to 1119 within six weeks of coaching during her junior track season "I saw her run up the (Conejo) he said "Anybody who can run up the grade has to be motivated I saw she had endurance and the po tential to develop Evidently so did OSU BASEBALL CARDS Summer Hours OPEN 7 DAYS Noon 6pm Gift Certificates Available!
