AUSTRALIA. Popular for Protective li.r fl-A Grent Strike. Tariff revision, which in Australia means increased rotection, is becoming an important political issue. There is a growing feeling among the of the Victorian Parliament that the Government will be forced to revise the tariff by those desirous of raising duties on a number of articles almost to prohibitive rates. At a largely attended meeting in Brisbane on July 7, the following resolution wa3 passed unanimously "That, in the opinion of this meetinz, a protection policy would lead to the immediate establishment of important industries eive a healthy impetus to those already established, and, by providing lt'tcitimate work for the unemployed, tend t( relieve the present depression and provide occupation lor the rising generation." Witnesses examined by the Melbourne Chamber of Manufactures in regard to tUe demand for increased protection fiver that several industries pay, duties rauging from to 70 per ceut are required.

The miners in the silver mines at Broken Bill have struck work, all the miuos are idle and about IWOO men are out of work. The question in dispute is as to the working of the mines. The mine-owners luvf decided that the stoping of ore shall be let by contract. The men refuse to agree to aud ask that it be paid for by day work as at present. Active measures continue to be taken for the relief of the unemployed in Melbourne and other cities.

The distress among the miners in the Newcastle district is increasing. At JVralba nihuy miners' families are said to bo oc the verue of starvation. A serious afftay has occurred between a party of whites and a number of natives at Angelou ltiver, in the north of Western Australia. Three natives were shot dead and two were severely wounded. The Victoria Mutual Building and Investment Society of Melbourne suspended payment in consequence of the steady withdrawal of deposits.

A chango of Government in South Australia has brougnt about the abandonment of the proposed intercolonial conference on the colored labor question. A movement is on foot in Melbourne for the etsiiblishment of freezing works in the laree pastoral districts of Australia for the extension of meat export trade on st approved lines. The idea i3 to erect works at most suitable inland centers for preparing carcases and convey ttietn in a frozen state to the sea. The Melbourne Tramway Compauy, bv a system of carrying the cable round sincle 12-foot sheaves ateach curve and dispensing with the numerous drums formerly used, has fully doubled the "life" of the cable on several lines, while that on St. Kilda, Prahran rihl Toorak has been trebled.

Mount Tongariro, Now Zealand, is stated to be sending up ereat clouds of dust from the crater, which apuears at Taupo like black smoke. The bouthwestern iip of the crater is falling in rapidly and the debris is expelled again in the shape dust. In the New Zealand electoral bill, which has been introduced to give lull effect to the principle of "one man one vote," the Government have embodied the female franchise, and have announced their deteruiinatioa to press it as a Government measure. The bill passed its second reading, and an amendment in committee intended to defeat the lemale franchise defeated by an overwhelming majority. Sir Harry Atkinson, Speaker of the" New Zealand Legislative Council, died suddenly from heart disease just after the opening ut the session.

SAMOA. Blataafa VTilline That the reopla Should Hold an Election for King. Mataafa is still at Malie with a very strong following. A number of districts invited him to address them, and in each instance the tone of the address was pacific All "talking men" disclaimed any intentio of starting war, contenting themselves with stating that they were much dissatisfied with the present state of affairs in Sataoa, aud that they preferred that Mataafa should be King. In an interview with the Press correspondent Mataafa stated that all he desired was that tbe natives should be allowed to exercise the rignc conferred on them under the treaty and an election for King; also that the authority of the three powers should be limited to tiie municipal district, retaining, however, the right to prevent war.

The appointment of Thomas Maben an Secretary of State has given more satisfaction than the general run of appointments. It is considered by the natives ai a sion on the part of Baron von Pilssch of the latter's incapacity to act as the adviser of the King. The flatly refuse to pay any more taxes. They are now 5120.000 in arrears. Bofore taking $17,000 at the credit of thn municipality for customs duties Seuft promised Mr.

Sewell, then United Consul- General, that he would set nside S6OOO to build the Yarsag.ino bridce. This be now refuses to do unless the Council votes property tax of 5 per cent. He has also given notice that he will not be responsible for the payment of the police alter tue end of August. The Land Commissioners are doing good work. They have uuuhed the district, almost the whole of which wav claimed bv whites, and whose titles were in dispute.

The decisions of the commissioners have given general satisfaction' to both natives whites. Kins Maliatoa has been presented with the sum of 52300 by Mr. Blacktock, aceat for the wreck iug company, being the iroceeds from the sale Of wreckage of the naval vessels lost in the storm which wrei-k---age was presented to the Samoans by the American Government. A rart of this has been by the Kiug among Falpule or the Couucil of Chiefs. Hawaiimi Notes.

The Honolulu Bulletin, editorially commenting on the tendered resignation o( Attorney-General Whiting, which has not, however, yet been accepted by the Queen, says: "When items in the Attorney-General's department were under consideration in the House the Premier joined in opposing and defeating an item for which tho At- ueneral was strenuously contending. This action of the head of the Cabinet left the Attorney-General no option, according to his view of the tituess of but to surrender his portfolio to the Premier." The Board of Health has had au offer from Dr. Hausen, a great leprosy specialist of Norway, to come to these islands to iuvestignte the disease as it appears here. Dr. Ilansen is the discoverer of the bacillus of leprusy and Inspector of Leprosy for Norway.
