Many Homes Are Being Erected in the Spanish Village by the Sea 'fc Mainly About Pe ople and Things Two New York boys held up a pedestrian one night and robbed him of $250 The other day they were sentenced to twenty seven years for the crime At first glance this sentence seems all out of proportion but when you consider it closely we believe agree there was justice in it The boys to begin with carried weapons Suppose the man had re sisted it is logical to asume that they would have used them It was the operation of chance not their own wills that kept them from be ing murderers In the second place suppose their victim had had $10000 in his pocket instead of $250 If you read that two men had been given twenty seven years in prison for robbing a man of $10000 you have thought the sentence particularly ex cessive Yet their crime even though it actually involved only $250 was just as great" We are going into this case at length because it is typical of many cases which are seized on by senti mentalists People who feel that we abuse our criminals are fond of com paring the dollars and cents involv ed in such cases with sentences imposed These people need to real ize that it the amount of money taken that makes a robbery serious it is the act of highway robbery it self The city of Miami la recently staged a big celebration to mark the completion of $300000000 worth of public developments and improve ments That is a tremendous sum Want to know how it has been divided? Well $150000000 has been spent on new hotels and apartments Near ly $100000000 went into new rail road facilities in and about Miami ifteen millions were spent on new public utilities and $12000000 more on new office buildings Paving and bridges in the city cost another $5 000000 only a partial itemization But interesting for this reason: It proves that Miami and the rest of lorida must have recovered from the effects of the hurricane and the post boom slump of a short time ago Prosperity apparently has return ed with a bang I I The good old days have returned and those of us who have been per plexed by the troubling problems and shibboleths of the modern world may now sigh the sigh of relief and hunt up our easy chairs again Congress is debating the tariff once more Time was when the tariff was the one sure fire political subject All other issues paled before it It was depending on your point of view either the source of every joy or the author of every evil Then came the puzzling post war days with a lot of new which the average man could never hope to discuss with any sort of fervor ew Americans ever got really mad discussing reparations or the world court But now congress is debating the tariff The good old days ireproof gasoline has been dis covered by a rench government official errier and has proved of such value that the rench Air Union has declared its intention of using it for its passenger airplanes shortly Those who have tested this gasoline report that you cannot set it afire with a match In contact with hot metal the gasoline remains in its liquid form It proves in use to be as efficient as ordinary gaso line Such are the main facts to date It is known however that the patents are in the hands of the rench Admiralty a step which errier took at once and that the British Air Ministry as well as rench lying circles are extreme ly interested errier has appar ently contributed to removing one of the main causes of apprehension in connection with flying namely the possibility of ignition of gaso line owing to an engine fault or a crash While Illinois loitered along its Hill trial and California temporized with its butcher Hickman Michigan put its killer of little girls away in a day or two The worst thing that can happen to a socialist is to get a chance to put his theories into practice for that is when they fail Congress is to provide money for the construction of 4085 miles of airways To the unitiated this might seem like throwing money to the winds Perfection in courtesy is reached when a drug store clerk sells a postage stamp and offers to wrap it up No Seline the corn belt is not something to keep tight shoes from hurting VOL NO 12 1 1 ra 1 0 oil anCHcmc nlr A The San Clemente Herald SAN CLEMENTE
