names of some of your friends who will accompany us to San Clemente at home 'Among the visitors to San Clemente last Sunday was Padilla one of the very best artist photographers in Southern California accompanied by his son Mr Padilla was returning from a trip to the Rancho Santa where he had taken a number of photos and having heard of the beauties of the Spanish Village decided to investigate for himself i He did so with the result that he stated that he could not express in any adequate manner his deep and un alloyed delight at the beauty of San Clemente from the standpoint of loca tion buildings erected etc He ex pressed himself as enraptured with the beauty of the Spanish Clubhouse and its magnificent furnishings both from the standpoint of the connoisseur in knowing the best in his line and from an artistic point of view also Mr Padilla expressed keenest ap preciation of the wonderful hand carved walnut furniture in the Club the Cafe San Clemente and the Ad ministration Building marvelling that such works of art were produced right here in San Clemente Mr Padilla made a number of nega tives of San Clemente beauty spots including homes buildings groups of riders on the bridle paths interiors of the Club the Cafe the Administra tion building etc and several of these will probably find their way into many leading periodicals newspapers and undoubtedly in El Heraldo de San Cle mente Disabled Veteran Who Was Shot and Cut to Strips Having Survived the War and Operations in Thir teen Hospitals Has Speeding ine Remitted a Saturday evening when stage attempted to effect an entrance by other ways than through the reg ular hole left by the carpenter and called a door The stage in into the town no doubt meaning to make a grand stand finish and it did for it failed to make the swing in the street at the Shell oil station but kept forging straight ahead until it came up against the side of the building No doubt it would have gone on thru had the weight of the car not caused the floor to sink so the machine had to come to a halt or push the whole building out of its way but even when it stopped it was nearly half way in the dining room There were some 30 passengers in the bus at the time but fortunately no one was injured The diners in the room at the time got more of a thrill than they wanted and the occupants of the bus thought their last moment had arrived and tested the strength of their lungs' The driver of the bus told the offi cer that the brakes had failed to hold when he attempted to park letting the heavy machine crash into the building I Some of the onlookers have a dif ferent story to tell and they aver that the machine was carrying altogether too much steam upon entering the town and when the driver attempted to put his foot on the brakes he ac cidentally stepped on the accelerator thus causing it to catapult into the building Judge' Landell informed the writer a few days ago that there will soon be a day of reckoning for those who do not think enough of a traffic of ticket to appear in court at the time set for hearing Last ri day there were twenty five delin quents and warrants were being is sued for their arrest His honor said that he could not conceive the mental 'calibre of a man figured that he could get away with a thing like that and when the were arrested and came before for BARRY Manager Administration Building A party was given Mr and Mrs George uller at the Sunshine Hotel in Orange on the 10th as a farewell courtesy prior to their departure for San Clemente where they will make several months at the Sunshine Hotel The ullers former Ver monters have been won to California as a place of residence They have chosen San Clemente as their future home to the regret of their Orange friends who would have preferred that they remain here These good people are already in stalled in their new home on the highway across from the Holloway filling station where have opened a wayside a clubhouse: Lions will join with other Southern California clubs in acceptance of Ole invitation to visit San Clemente and establish a club at the noted seaside Spanish Village it was unanimously decided nt a session of the executive board yesterday Hanson subdivider of the vil lage has promised to give the Lions a valuable lot on which a clubhouse will be constructed later He is very' eager to see the institution of a Lions Club at the village Dr Wells president of the Riverside Club We for Ole Hanson uu had was ler fied up for an explanation His honor weighed the evidence carefully He visioned the wreck of a man fighting for his country in for eign lands and stopping more than his share of the bullets that came his way He saw him on the various hos pital operating tables and the shape these operations left him in He could not erase the fact from his mind that the men who knew him best had pro vided him with a vehicle which would give him pleasure and some comfort and also he took into consideration that if a fine was levied it would have to come from the money which he re ceived from the government in the way of a pension Jddge Landell thought of all these things and more and in summing up the case decided that oley was hav ing about all the he was en titled to and fined him in the sum of $40 the same he would administer all other speeders this little word of three letters has an awful weight he remitted the fine and turned him over to his wife for safe keeping with the injunction to see that he did not commit the same error again and she promised that he would not NOTED SCULPTOR VISITED CITY THIS WEEK CAE SAN CLEMENTE Good Eats All the Time and Special Dinners for Sunday With a Lloyd oley a disabled veteran was picked up on the highway for at the rate of 55 miles an hour in his Chrysler car and made his explanation to Judge Landell the other day He explained that there was no rea son at all for his making the unlaw ful speed He was in no to get anywhere and had all time he wanted at his disposal Then he told his history to the judge and his honor being somewhat tenderhearted with the milk of human kindness coursing through his veins listened to the end and acted in his best judgment This is the story told: oley as said before is a war veter an and was literally shot and cut to pieces He had been in thirteen hos pitals for treatment and operations and now is the living wreck of a hu man being with his days numbered Some of his buddies bought and pre sented him with the car he was driv ing in the hope that it would add some semblance during the bal ance of his life and give him a chance to get the fresh air in his lungs and perhaps prolong his life to some ex tent It was his first time out in the car and the sheer joy of being able to go about comfortably and enjoy the sights probably prompted him to press a little too hard on the gas until he men him they would have food thought that would last them a long time He had one such case before him last week He was a colored man named Louis Welch and was ticketed on 'the 26th of last December He promptly forgot all about the little affair so a warrant was issued for him on the 5th day of January He could not be located for some time but was eventually found in the A janitor service and was taken in He had an alibi all prepared say ing that he had never been arrested for his work kept him too busily oc cupied to allow the time off for rec reation He notified the judge that it was his brother who was the trans gressor but that he was in Chicago now After more talk he got his tale twisted so badly that he was all bound with a woolen in very short order' and finally de cided to come through with the truth He acknowledged that he was the guilty one and said that he did not know why he tried to evade the issue in the first place The judge con veyed the sad news that his lapse of memory was going to cost him $20 and assessed a fine of $40 on the original charge Welch did not have the necessary cash to settle so he was taken to jail at Santa Ana where he will have time to reflect on the advisability of heeding the law in the future Judge Landell says that he is pret ty sore at the contempt shown by some of the people for the law and that he will commence throwing the book at them in the near future He has been very fair in his dealings with those who erroneously think they can get away with anything less than murder but that will have to be spoken of in the past tense in the future And now they say red is hard on the nerves And it may be when it route between San Clemente and Oceanside The repairs to this bridge are temporarily held up pending the arrival of long piling The piling in use at this point ap proximates 60 to 80 feet in length because of the exceptional depth of the sand Tn order to drive piling to this depth the timber must be straight and clear Timber of this kind is not available locally and must be brought from the forests of Oregon or Wash ington A good dirt detour of about three miles takes care of the traffic until the bridge can be rebuilt Wanted to trade house and lot in On tario for lot in San Clemente Box week wandered down to the beach to watch the wavelets and get a good breath of the sea breeze While walk ing along the shore he noticed a sea gull that seesem to be in distress so he proceeded to its condi tion thought that it must as well as injured so he take it home feed it and first aid wife was not when the good Samaritan arrived with his find consequently was not pre pared for what was to follow The bird was given a good feed then deposited under the bed to re cuperate during its absence on duty riend wife returned home before Willard did and not knowing what had been placed under the bed blissfully: disrobed and turned in Just about the time she was off she heard a noise which sounded as if someone was moving under the bed Then there was another thump thump and she became frightened Reaching the bed light she turned it on and glanced over the edge Then she saw a head sticking out Of course it was magnified in her fright but she decided to see what the animal looked like and proceeded to dislodge the gull She thought it would feel more at home out in the open than in a stpffy room so she liberated it and proceeded to the restaurant to recount her ex perience to her husband He explained how the bird came to be under the bed and was bawled out in proper shape for his actions and causing her the scare of her life When Willard went home: after duty about midnight friend wife was wait ing for him and finished the discourse she had started earlier in the evening but nad not finished owing to inter ruption Willard says that while he will con tinue his
