BLYTHITILLB COURIER NEWS WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 1086; 2 Abuses by TV Sponsors Cut Into Show Time But Most Stick Close To 3-Minute Limit On Commercials By WAYNE OLIVBfi NEW YORK (AP) Most sponsors of nighttime network television stick, ciose to the time limit of three minutes of commercials per half hour prescribed by the industry's code, but two abuses are con spicuous: 1. Splitting the commercials into several pieces and sandwiching them into the program so often the entertainment seems to be a mere interruption of the sales spiel. 2, Free plugs in the entertain- Bient portion, entirely aside from the sponsor's own commercial Hme, so the sum total of commercials leaves the viewer dizzy. Most viewers concede the right of the sponsor to a reasonable amount of sales time, but many question whether he does as well for himself with such frequent interruptions as he would with a more thorough job at the start and at ttie end of the show. One of the most enjoyable new shows on TV is George Gobel's Saturday night program on NBC.

But it too suffers from the malady. The latest Gobel show, for example had five separate commercials, including sponsor identification. Goebel had 12 minutes without interruption before the middle commercial and 9 2-3 minutes not quite 22 minutes in all out of the half hour. This was followed locally by three quickie commercials before the start of the Hit Parade. Then was the same story over again with the entertainment confined to 10 minutes before the middle commercial and 1014 minutes afterward, unless you count 30 seconds of a song plugging the sponsor's product.

But those two aren't by any means unusual nor even the worst in this respect. On CBS-TV's the Clock and Two for the Money, big signs advertising the sponsors' products are on camera throughout the programs. The extraneous plugs within the entertainment portions of the programs, and separate from the sponsor's commercials, are familiar on such shows as Ralph Edwards' This Is Your Life, Big Payoff, Welcome Travelers and Godfrey and His Friends.
