indicating opening of the 1944 season Mrs Post Suggests Announcements In Name Change By EMILY POST A printed form in my Book has prompted one of my readers to write me as follows "We want to change our family name from an unpronounceable one (in English) to a simple one like Brown But the form of announcement given in your Book to send in such cases suggests this action has to be taken legally And yet my wife heard not long ago on a broadcast that anyone could take any name he pleases without taking legal steps In answer to this in New York State I know (and I have been told this is true in all of the States but I cannot affirm this as a fact) there is no legal provision made to prevent a person taking any name he (or she) pleases as long and this is the important part is ready to give proof at any time that the name was not taken with intent to defraud As ex plained to me it is the safest plan to change a name through the Court so that all legal angles may be disposed of first in order to make the procedure inviolate against any possible counter claims later on In this case the form of announcement suggested in my book would be correct: Mr and Mrs John Original Name announce that by permission of the Court They and Their Children havet taken the family name of BROWN Dresses or a Morning Wedding Dear Mrs Post: Which is better taste for the mothers of 'the bride and the groom to wear at a morn ing wedding and day dresses with street length skirt or a long skirt? The bride Is wear ing traditional bridal white and having attendants also dressed in long dresses Some of the men taking part including the bride groom will be in uniform others wearing plain business suits There will be a large reception after ward Answer: A short dress would be preferable although there is no ob jection to wearing long dresses if the wedding is going to be a very big one and if you have long dresses which you particularly like In oher words ata wedding is the one time when it would be permissible to wear long dresses before noon (This means by members of the families as well as by the at tendants) Wedding Music Music at a wedding must be care fully chosen to be in good taste The girl who seeks a proper wed ding will find help in Mrs booklet "The Etiquette of Wed No 501
