Rainfall in the San Antonio area was widespread and heavy over the weekend, with most of it cormng from an early Sunday morning downpour. Fire Station No. 19 in Dellview reported total rainfall of 3.1 inches early Sunday evening, followed closely with an three inches of rain in Colonial Hills in the northwest portion of the city. Other fire stations reporting rainfall were No.

1, downtown, 2.1 inches; No. 11 on Frio City Road, 2.5 inches; No. 18 in East San Antonio, 1.8 inches; No. 21 in Harlandale, 2.54 inches; the Alamo Heights station, 1.85 inches; Windcrest, 1.78 inches; station No. 26, Las a 1 a 2.4 inches; and No.

29 in Highland Hills, 1.75 inches. The U.S. Weather Bureau reported 2.76 inches of rain in a 24-hour period ending at 7 p.m. Sunday. Five persons were killed and one injured in a two-car crash at 10:30 a.n>.

Sunday on Texas 239 about eight miles south of Kenedy during a rainstorm. The five persons killed were Virgie Dale Coles, 26, of Victoria, Randy Ryan HeR, 17, Ruby K. Bammert, 46, Ardella Von Dohlen, 34, and her husband Elo G. Von Dohlen, 53, all of Goliad. Another Injured Injured in the crash was Genaro F.

Quintana 22, a postal cleric from Poteet. According to Highway Patrolman J. W. Stewart, the crash occurred when the car drivai by Von Dohlen skidded out of con trol and was struck broadside by the vehicle driven by Quin tana. After treatment in Hospital Quintana was a Sr- ferred to Baptist Hospital in San Antonio where he was listed in undetermined condition.

A -c a crash in a rainstorm claimed the lives of a Goliad couple and left the driver of the other car hospitalized in Goliad County Hospital, Killed were Allen Carter, 78. and his wife, Erlene Cunningham Carter, 63. Ancording to Highway Patrolmen Gary Bourland and R. W. A hospital spokesman said Miss Gomez was listed in good condition with minor cuts and bruises. Jimmie Lee Spangenberg, 25, was drowned early Sunday when the car in which he and lus wife were riding, was swept off a low-water crossing by high wa ter in a 0 Creek, in the southwest section of Fredericksburg. The creek, as well as other streams in a large area of Gillespie County, was on a ram page from torrential rains, of from four to iQ inches that fell late Saturday. Gillespie County Sheriff Hugo Klaemer said that Mrs. Spangenberg was able to get out of the car and made it to shore near the crossing and that the last she saw of her husband was when he started towards her, and then disappeared.

Members of the Fredericksburg Volunteer Fire Department, state, county and city officers, started a search for the body of Spangenberg, which was found three-quarters of a mile from the crossing by State Highway Patrolman Lynn Lenders at 6 a.m., Sunday. Car Found The car in which the couple was riding was found a half mile from the crossing by Gillespie County Deputy Sheriff David Nehr. Spangenberg was a machinist by trade and was employed by the -T Machine Co. of PTedericksburg. He had returned here several months ago after having worked for a San Antonio firm.

Most of South and Central Texas was deluged with rains late Saturday and early Sunday with some flash flooding reported on the upper Frio River ami its tributaries eastward to the Sabinal River in Real, Edwards and Uvalde Counties.

The waters had subsided Sunday afternoon in these areas as the crest of the Frio moved south of U.S. 90. There was some additional flooding of the Frio southeast of Uvalde. The Frio was expected to crest near 20 feet at Derby, about 65 miles southwest of San A nt 0 i 0 Monday, with some flooding expected. The U.S.

Weather Bureau said extensive flooding will continue downstream on the Frio to Tilden in the next several days. There was also flooding on the Leona River at Batesville, Sunday evening. Moderate flooding is forecast on the middle Nueces from above Cotulla to below Tilden later this week. The City of Uvalde had 11.5 i of rainfall, with some temporary flooding reported in low-lying areas of the community. Roads Closed Most of the farm-to-market roads in Uvalde County were closed.

U.S. 377 was closed be tween Rocksprings and Judson in Edwards County. U. S. 277 was closed south of Del Rio.

Up to nine inches of rain sent San Felipe Creek roaring out of its banks at Del Rio as rain fell again Sunday. The wide open area east of Eagle Pass caught more than 12 inches of rainfall. A flash flood on the Llano River delivered a blow to Lake LBJ and Lake Marble Falls early Sunday. Sirens signaled the opening of floodgates at Wirtz Dam at 7 a.m. This was the first notification given any residents of the threat of a flood.

However, Jack Valentine, operator of Valentine Lodges at Kingsland, on the Llano arm of Lake LBJ, was awakened at 6 a.m. by a crash. Investigating, he found his large marina had disappeared in raging floor waters. A mile below, Mrs. Dot Applegate, operator of Kingsland Lodges, reported a large marina and a i i dock had been swept away by flood waters.

A large fishing dock at the home of R. W. Loveless was totally destroyed across the lake from three large boathouses owned by former President Lyndon B. Johnson. boathouses were flooded, but apparently were not badly damaged.

Waters of Lake LBJ rose at 9:50 a.m. to 828 feet, three feet above normal operating level, at which time all six floodgates were opened. This resulted in flood waters rising more than three feet on Lake Marble Falls within 30 minutes, although all floodgates there were opened. The water ater rose to six and a half feet above operating level. Extensive damage was reported to water ront properties.

Most heavily damaged was Korner, a resort and mobile home area, where all boat docks and marinas were heavy damaged and flooded. The waters of Backbone Creek, which flow past Kern Komer and flow into Lake VI a 1 Falls, backed up into and overflowed into City Park at Marble Falls. A new bridge connecting the i district with the west part of the community was inundated and traf- ic was halted for several hours. Rains of four and six inches sent the upper Guadalupe flooding low places in the Comfort bolo Creek flooded low places in the Selma area. At Medina, in a report not received until Sunday afternoon because the weather reporter was stranded by high water, a total of 7.65 inches fell.

Rainfall amounts reported include: Sabinal, 4.46; Dilley, 4.80; Stonewall, 3.15; Leakey, 6.50; Crystal City, 4.21; Utopia, 7.54; Carrizo Springs, 2.90; Cotulla, 2.06; Rocksprings, 2.50; Derby, 6.20; San Saba, 2.88; Fowlerton, 4.25; Big Wells, 7.55; and Camp Wood, 3.0 The U. S. Weather Bureau reported a chance of more show ers through Monday for the San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Victoria and Austin areas. Small craft warnings were displayed along the Gidf Coast from Brownsville to Port Arthur. Pecos: Considerable cloudiness Monday with a few showers or thundershowers molnly In the southeast portion.
