Gilbert Brown, geologist, petroleum engineer and proponent of a hook-up with industry to increase the size of the Texas Open purse. Brown, who has been working in the association for 20 years, took over as president on Sept. 1, replacing Ray Creek.

He steps into a job at a most critical time in the history of the association which sponsors the annual Texas Open. a time of transition in professional golf. There is more talk every day about having two pro golf tours a major tour and a satellite tour. More and more large corporations are entering the golf business, sending tournament purses to an astronomical level. a time when the SAGA is going to have to make some big decisions about the future of the Texas Open, and its members have put their confidence in Brown.

A Vote for Uniroyal BROWN, WHO HAS HELD EVERY OFFICE in the association, is a leading proponent in the local organization who is for tying in with industry' in order to increase the size of the Texas Open purse. The purse is now $100,000. definitely not considered large in this day of $250,000 tournaments. Jackie Gleason is even trying to put on a $1 million tournament. Heck, a $100,000 tournament in HUton Head, S.C.

And a lot more Hilton Heads trying to get on the PGA calendar. Brown believes that within a few years there will be two tours and the most San Antonio could hope to swing within tlw next three to five years without a hook-up with a corporation is $125,000. Now that may relegate San Antonio to the minor tour, something he nor anyone else in the association has spoken in favor of. Texas Open is the only major league sport we have in San Brown says. we want to keep it that In order to do that he thinks a tie-in with Uniroyal or some other large corporation is the answer.

And since Uniroyal has shown interest in sponsoring and that means putting on a tournament in the neighborhood of $200,000 a tournament for three years Brown hopes to line the company up by 1971. If a tie come, Brown sees an increasingly rougher time ahead for the association in raising the $130,000 it takes to put on a $100,000 show. BALTIMORE (AP) -Paul squeeze bunt with two out in the 12th inning scored Mark Belanger with winning run and the Orioles nipped Minnesota 4-3 Saturday in the opening game of the American East-West playoffs. The victory gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 playoffs which continue Sunday. Belanger opened the 12th with a single off Harmon glove at third base.

Andy Etchebarren sacrificed and then Don Buford bounced to shortstop with Belanger taking third. Then Blair, hitless in four previous at bats, dumped a bunt along the third base line and Belanger raced home. The Orioles tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on Boog 0 I 400-foot home run. Then, the Birds almost won it. Brooks third hit of the game knocked out Minnesota starter Jim Perry, with Robinson reaching second when Ted Uhlaender, a ninth-inning defensive replacement, booted the ball.

Ron Perranoski relieved and when second baseman Rod Carew dropped pinch hitter Curt 0 11 0 easy pop fly behind first, the Orioles had runners at first and second with none out. Dave Johnson, attempting to bunt, fouled to the catcher and Belanger, who had homered earlier, forced Motton. Then, with Merv Rettenmund, another pinch hitter, at bat, Robinson and Belanger tried a delayed double steal. catcher George Mitteiwald faked a throw to second and then caught Robinson off third, ending the rally. Until the ninth, Perry was working on a four-hitter and leading 3-2 on Tony two- run homer in the seventh off Mike Cuellar.

Oliva connected after Harmon Killebrew had coaxed a one-out walk from Cuellar, the only base on balls the Cuban left-hander allowed in the eight innings he worked. The Orioles struck first, with Frank Robinson lashing a line- drive home run off the foul pole in left field in the fourth. The Twins tied it in the fifth when Oliva opened with a double to right and reached third when the ball got by Frank Robinson. He came home on Bob line-drive sacrifice fly to Buford in left field. The Orioles regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Belanger i 11 a home run over the auxiliary scoreboard in left field.

It was only the sixth home run of major neyman rebever Dick Hall, who had weaved his way out of a bases-loaded, one-out hole in the top of the 12th. The Twins had filled the bases on two walks and a single by Ted Uhlaender only their fourth hit of the game and first since two-run homer in the seventh. Hall came on to strike out Cardenas and then got pinch-hitter John Roseboro on a fly ball, ending the threat. MINNESOTA SALTIMORE BOOG POWELL hits homer league career. The Orioles shortstop had hit two previously this season, the last one on April 23.

The 2-1 lead lasted only until the seventh when Oliva connected. In the ninth, with Cesar Tovar on second with one out, the Orioles walked Killebrew intentionally to face Oliva and Pete i escaped the jam by striking out the slugger. Brown Atlanta Defense Collapses To Give Mets 9-5 Trinmph Personal Contact ATLANTA (AP) The alert New York Mets struck for five runs in the eighth inning Saturday when the Atlanta defense collapsed around Phil Niekro, handing the Mets a 9-5 victory in the first game of a best-of-5 playoff for the National League pennant. Orlando wild peg to the plate let the Mets take the lead in the sloppy eighth and Tony fumble of J.C. pinch single contributed to the downfall of the Braves who had racked up Tom Seaver, the 25-game-winning ace for eight hits, including two homers and four doubles in seven innings. The crowd of 50,122 was enjoying a warm, late afternoon with a 5-4 Atlanta lead going into the eighth, made possible by Hank tie-breaking homer in the seventh.

Then Wayne Garrett opened the met eighth with a double down the left field line, and Cleon Jones followed with a single that tied the score. Art third single had Niekro, the knuckleball artist. BREAKS GAME OPEN New York Mets' J. C. Braves' catcher Bob Didier watches the Wire- photo. ONE OF HIS IDEAS to help raise money for the tournament Is a change in ticket sales. He has suggested that possibly a $10 ticket for the entire tournament may bring in more money than selling sponsorships and daily tickets.

He stresses that only an idea, and wiU depend on his lieutenants to hash out any changes in tinket sales. Brown also hopes to help line up pros for the Texas Open. A fine golfer. Brown will be playing in the Andy Williams-San Diego Open and the Bob Hope Desert Classic a few weeks before the Texas Open in February. Of course Brovni admits that one man could bring more people out to the Te.xas Open than any other, and Arnold Palmer.

One association member said at the SAGA meeting last week that they could bring Palmer out in a coffin and draw more people than most of the other pros put together. Palmer has returned to San Antonio to play only once since he won the Texas Open three years in a row, and that was in 1968 for the PGA Championship. 'This year Brown hopes to bring him and the best field he can to San Antonio for the Open. Final Alamo Golf Round Set the relay of catcher Bob Didier to shortstop Gil Garrido to third baseman Clete Boyer. With one out and men on first and third, Ed Kranepool rapped to Cepeda at first but the Atlanta first baseman threw the ball into the dirt at the plate, letting Jones score the tie-breaking Martin to bat for Seaver, who had been hit hard all day long.

Martin ripped a single to center that Gonzalez bobbled while Boswell, Kranepool and Harrelson scored. Four of the five runs in the bizarre inning were unearned. Seaver was the winner and Niekro the loser, following the regular-season pattern that saw Seaver beat the Braves three imes and Niekron lose to the mets three times. Seaver wound up the regular season with a 10- game winning streak and has not lost a game since Aug. 5 at Cincinnati.

It was a loosely played game, calculated to inspire a burst of confidence in the Baltimore Orioles and Minnesota Twins who are playing off for the American League flag and the right to meet the survivor in the World Series starting next Saturday. The Orioles drew first blood in the AL series, edging the Twins 4-3 in 12 innings. In addition to the two costly errors in the eighth, there were passed balls by catchers Jerry Grote of the Mets and Didier of the Braves, who was dow'n on his knees blocking errant knucklers all day. Boswell had an error for the Mets and wound up with a red face in the third when Aaron ripped a hit into center and dodged Boswell in the baseline to make it second for a double.
