15 Illinois, Tuesday, January 28, 1969 THE DECATUR REVIEW PAGE THIRTEEN Deliveries Continued Firms Won't End Longview Service business refusal to continue fighting the situation. Elmer Scribner, manager of Diller's Market, 809 N. Broadway, said his delivery men have a hard time getting to specific addresses and are sometimes blocked in after making a call. He has no plans to curtail service, however, nor does Pete Taylor, manager of Yellow Cab Co. "We like to give our customers as complete: a service as possible, but when a drive is blocked, the problem is more troublesome to the passenger than the driver." he said.

It usually means the person just has to get out a half block or more from his door and walk the rest of the way," Taylor said. "For some of the older people, it's difficult if not dangerous, especially in bad weather. "Our customers have been very gracious about it." he said. "We both know it's a an internal problem there." Spokesmen for United Parcel Service, Gneckow's Grocery, and Roth-Johnson Drug Stores said the problem was spasmodic, not a daily occurrence. Commissioners of the Decatur Housing Authority last week ordered a crackdown on parking violators which would include towing away and impounding vehicles.

Don F. Davis, executive director of the project, reported today that at least 14 autcs. most of them abandoned not in operating order, have been hauled away since Jan. 1. The enforcement now is to fall with equal emphasis on autos in regular use which are left illegally in the service lanes or Longview yards.

Decatur businesses which voiced concern over possible provide home delivery services reported today they will continue to serve Longview lies despite access problems. Several groceries, drug stores, and the Yellow Cab Co. have reported difficulties in reaching Longview addresses because of cars parked illegally in the housing project's narrow service lanes. The paved "ministreets" between Longview apartment buildings are too narrow to permit cars to pass. An elderly tenant last week DARE Plans Work Force A work force is planned by the Decatur Association for Racial Equality (DARE) to help homeowners or tenants make minor repairs or improvements on their homes.

The project was suggested to the group Monday by Paul V. Donaldson, deputy director of the Decatur County Opportunities Corp. Volunteers will work through referrals by Donaldson on homes where co-operation is promised by landlords, tenants and owners. DARE members also voted to send individual letters to school board members in support of the elementary school integration plans of task force 3 of the Community Commission on Integration. Participation in the Black Central Coordinating Committee was endorsed, and a nominating committee was picked to arrange a slate of officers for next month's DARE election.
