his mark on either baseball or his home state His nine year career with the New York Yan kees over Rolfe became a coach manager and ad ministrator Along the way he managed the Detroit Tigers earning the Manager of the Year Award in 1950 and served as athletic direc tor at Dart mouth College Rolfe could be hard nosed His efforts to control his behavior sit well with major leaguers a fac tor that cut his major league man aging days short But what fails in one environ ment sometimes works in another When Rolfe returned to Dartmouth for the final phase of his career building character was part of his job description His rules sen cd him and the college well Yems before Rolle had gone to Dartmouth to become a teacher Professional baseball postponed this ambition but in 1942 Rolfe was ready to teach And not just base ball He also coached basketball in cluding a team in the first year of the National Basketball Associa tion Rolfe spent his first few years out of the majors at an Ivy League scnooi otner than his alma mater at a job he had set up while still with New York He coached base ball and basket ball at Yale dur ing World War II racking up a 56 17 record on the diamond and a 48 28 mark on the court Rolfe wanted more The Yan kees hired him as their first base coach in 1946 and after the season was over he coached the Toronto Hus kies in 1946 47 He joined the De troit
